It's clear to me the coaches don't see Berry as a FT inside mid. Even if I think he should be in there too.

I’m pretty sure it’s common (but not completely confirmed) knowledge that he 100% wouldn’t be able to go inside full time because of his shoulder. In his one game inside this year he ended up hurting his shoulder as well. I don’t think it’s feasible to plan on the hopes someone won’t get injured in that role and I think he’s a good winger anyway.

Just my opinion, because we don’t hear anything out of the club, but Berry’s left shoulder is stuffed, hence why we play him in a less physical position.

Agree with both briztoon and buttermuffs, wing is probably the least physical place on the ground he can play. I mentioned he would be good across half back, but watching him play on the weekend and take that strong contested mark in the forward line, he really struggled to manage that shoulder and it didn't pop or anything, really just jarred against the ground.

In addition, watching Andrews play against a smaller opponent and use his smarts to zone off and intercept, we would.probably be better off finding another tall defender to replace Lester / Gardiner and then use Andrews as the third tall down there. As an aside to his career he was AA and dominant early.on when he was one of the few 200cm key backs and most key forwards were 195ish. Now that they are creeping up into ruckman height and still agile (Kings, McKay etc), he doesn't look as comfortable without his height / reach advantage.

Any thoughts on who could be a third tall lock down defender, or another tall inside mid across the league that would fit our needs?

Third tall options >

Tom Doedee still hasn't signed a contract extension, free agent at the end of this season.

I also like the Irishman Callum Brown(OOC) from the Giants, has Harry Himmelberg signed another contract yet?

Nick Coffield(OOC) from the Saints has been injury prone but if we could get his body right he might finally live up to the draft hype.

This is where Berry most likely plays starting from next season with Robertson also a decent backup option our midfield is fine we do need to look at a 3rd defensive option though I would love to look at McKay from North allowing Harris to play loose where he plays he’s best
Midfield is the least of my concerns going forward. Provided they keep improving, we’re going to get a few inside mids from our academy and father sons at the 2024 & 2025 drafts.

The one caveat being, we could look for another Dunkley type through free agency.

I believe we should be looking to improve our KPP’s at both ends of the ground.

Lester is 32 next year, Daniher is 30 next year, Gardiner is 29 next year, and Andrews is 28 next year.

The only listed KPP reserve I have any confidence in atm, is Fullerton, and we haven’t seen him at senior level this year, to see if his improved VFL form will translate to AFL level.

I’d be putting a lot of work in to Ethan Read from the Gold Coast academy. Will make a very good key defender in 3 or 4 years.

I think we have seen the value of having a mobile third tall forward as well.

Gunston has been disappointing, because of how slow he is, and I’m not sold on Fort or McInerney playing as a ruck forward, because both have are very slow as soon as the ball hits the ground or is out of arms reach.

Neither of our rucks could put in a performance similar to what Jackson did last night for Fremantle, as neither have that sort of mobility or athleticism.

Definitely need KP depth both ends of the ground.
And if we are looking at bringing in any free agents or trades, that needs to be where we are looking.
Especially mobile third tall types.

Jack Silvagni?

I love Dev and am hoping he stays. Been a lot of reports he is interested in a move back to WA though.

I think you’re harsh on Kelly, absolute gun mid playing in one of the all time worst sides currently. But I understand your point regarding his age and having Lyons on the list ect. I just think we shouldn’t be afraid recruiting guys aged around 28-31 whilst in a premiership window. A gun in that age bracket could make the difference.

I don’t think there’s been any reports that Dev has been trying to move back. I don’t doubt he’s considering it, but only because he was in the 2s - if he gets consistent games he stays.

I’d take Doedee for sure , I’d rather Himmelberg though

think McIvor posted he saw Payne and his girlfriend being interviewed by BT last Friday and she lives in Melbourne. I think Payne is OOC 2024? Surely he would not want to leave sunny QLD to go to Melbourne, if he did we surely need to recruit a KPD but there are not too many lockdown types, Himmelberg probably more intercept and suspect he prefers playing forward. Doedee not a lockdown defender.

The club better pitch them a personal airport to stay then and call it “Panyes Adventures” :airplane:

Jack Silvagni?
I'd take him as a third tall forward.

I don't watch a lot of Carlton, but the little I have watched, I've always liked Silvagni's games. For me, he would be the forward version of Lester as a third tall forward. He's a role player, he knows his role, and he always looks like a smart player.

That’s it, we should put Lester up forward as our third tall forward :D

Carlton supporters I respect really rate him. 100% hard at it.

Better ruck than Daniher as well

I was thinking a more traditionally key tall defender, basically trying to replicate having Adams + Payne + Andrews, thus making Andrews the 3rd tall and able to be that floating interceptor.

As for a good tall 3rd marking forward, because we have so many smalls that are strong overhead, it doesn't seem like that much of a need.

Long term I agree we need to get some more tall timber onto the list, if we want to go the poaching route trying to convince King to head up north and live with his brother in QLD could tempt him. Although unlikely.

Max King is St.Kilda fan growing up. He's home already, wearing Nick Riewoldt number as well. Won't go anywhere unless there is a major fallout.

* that, I’d be making that priority #1

I'd argue that holding onto Lohman and Dev would be more important, McKenna is definitely a solid 3rd. Got to secure the youth.

Don't think the club has changed their stance on Dev being essential since last year. Don't think he will go anywhere unless trade capital is needed, but Prior would be the one to go back west in that case.

Private rail - sure it's longer but who doesn't want to hop on the Payne Train vs the Payne Plane.

I think their types are very replaces. Flashy small forward and unskilled, small inside mid versus a lightning quick half back

I hadn't even thought of Jack Silvagni as a trade target, I do like him, he is taller than I thought at 194cm so could definitely play as that 3rd tall, Vossy doesn't seem to be sold on him so he could be open to a move, according to footywire he is a RFA at the end of this season.
