It’s more the percentages. Players in the top are more likely to play 100, 200 games etc

The argument isn’t that you can’t find gems or good players with late picks but the success rate is much less.

In our position now we need more higher probability picks.

And it's not just the phantom draft, there is talk on multiple mediums that this is a very shallow draft and now talking less than 50 taken.... so even saying as low as 40 which is further highlighted by multiple clubs trying to get out of the 2nd rd not just those that need the points.

We are in a pretty unique position right now and on the cusp of something massive if we can get that GWS deal done.

If the GWS deal is in the works, I can actually see us ending up with 4 x top 10 picks.

Something like:

15 for Haynes & 7

17, 18, F2 (North) for 8 + F2 (Geelong)



2,3,7,8.

McKercher, Duursma/Watson, O'Sullivan, Caddy.

If that eventuates, then there are no excuses over the next decade to not be in contention.

Phil Davis had interesting comments yesterday - based on the GWS experience - about the pressure on a bunch of high draft picks when it’s assumed they will achieve success based on their junior careers. I think he was responding to a caller saying North should ditch all its older players and put its faith in these and recent draftees.

We absolutely should not do that.

These new pieces need to compliment what we’ve already got (which is a solid group).

If we’re not in flag contention by 2027, shit has gone south.

He's absolutely right. When you're younger it's amazing what having an experienced hand around does for you. We actually probably need one more Shiels type player to come in.
