FYI Shiel has a foot injury that is somewhat "persistent".

Essendon wont have him in preseason training until after Christmas. Modified program before that.

Not that it means much, but he's already carrying...
Shiel doesn’t need to play a game for us if he lands us a first round compo pick. That’ll already be more than some blokes who were on our list for half a decade achieved

I think the idea for Dow is a Lipinski type. Kept out of a good midfield with something to offer. Doubt he becomes elite but he can definitely contribute.

Ross and SOS will know his game back to front and he'll walk into our midfield.

It's unlikely we pick up an elite bull with this type of trade. Owens probably our best bet there.
Yep agree. Dow looks to just be hitting his straps now, which is not a surprise when you think most players take about 5 years in the system before they become accomplished.

The way i see it is he's 6months older than Bytel, has played an extra 50 games and his stats both in AFL and VFL have been much better. So It's a no brainer for me.

classic Essendon. Like a used car salesman, always trying to screw you over.

Lovett - Came with Baggage
Carlisle - Came with Baggage and injury
Shiel - Comes with injury

I dont really think this is true for Gresh.

I have my issues with him but if he was happy to cop a contract and salary worthy of his output id happily keep him. Alternatively if someone wants to make him an $800k a year player ill wish him all the best.

Loyalty is dead in footy, thats fine, we shouldnt be paying overs for an incumbent unless they are genuinely a grade. Hes not and someone else wants to pay him like he is. Its not really a sad story either way.

I think he is at his best. It’s a gamble to hold and hope that he can get back to his best. And is a gamble to sell him for a pick that probably doesn’t get a better player. I’m with the hold and hope because we don’t attract players easily. You need 30 good players to make a good side. In 5 years we are probably back in the same place.

To be fair, Essendon’s injury management/ strength and conditioning have been borderline negligent for the last few years. So many players go there and end up with chronic injuries. Hopefully, Shiel’s injuries are few and far between if he comes.

I dont think the best weve seen from him is worth that, its the potential and glimpses that weve seen that youd be paying that sort of coin for.

To each their own, if he wants $800k im happy for someone else to pay him that.

Its not just the letting him go, it's the salary relief as well.

If he was on $400-500k, then I'm agreeing with you 100%, but on the cash required to trigger band 1, that would be crazy to pay that, and what are you saying to the other players on the list who have had more impact? You can't put them all on that money.

Never seen anything that says we get a first for taking him. Take a 5 place upgrade and move to a pick straight after ours rather than end of first round by giving Essendon more money to spend on Gresham. I think there was a suggestion that we’d give them a later pick to take Shiel too.

Latest development re the Tassie team for those of you worried about getting access to future draft picks.

The majority of Tasmanians want a team but don't want a stadium due to cost, location (being at Mac Pt, or in Hobart if you're from the north), being bullied by the AFL, transport problems, etc, etc.

So, to try to generate PR and support there are bumper stickers saying they support the team and the stadium. This is offset by stickers saying "yes" to team, "no" to the stadium . A new group has just joined the fray, "yes" to the stadium, "no" to the team!! Hilarious really.

There is a fair cost to the team as well isn't there?
"promised to underpin the new team’s first 12 seasons with $12 million a year "

Will the team remain viable after 12 seasons if the government pull out?

I remember a government promising to build a railway to Waverly.

Can someone post the article?

It mentions we'd send the compo pick back to Essendon for Shiel. That's the last we have to worry about this happening.

The only way we're taking Shiel is if we don't give up any draft capital we would use otherwise.
