Dogs sniffing around injured Saint

A second club – the Western Bulldogs – has expressed interest in hard-luck St Kilda defender Nick Coffield, one of a number of Saints whose future is in limbo.
Brisbane also inquired about the out-of-contract Coffield, the No.8 pick in the 2017 draft who has not played at AFL level since 2021 due to an ACL setback and then persistent calf issues.
The 23-year-old made it back for four VFL games late in the season, averaging 23 disposals, six marks and eight rebound 50s, and is one of a number of out-of-contract players on the Bulldogs’ radar, including promising Lion Kai Lohmann.
Rivals believe fellow Saints Hunter Clark and the contracted Jack Billings (2025) and Dougal Howard (2024) are also gettable. St Kilda are keen to invest in the draft, but none of this group is likely to score them a high-end selection.
Billings – who coach Ross Lyon views as a forward only – has mild interest elsewhere and would ideally like to move on after playing only three senior games this season, but key defender Howard seems more likely to stay.

Zak Jones, Jimmy Webster, Daniel McKenzie, Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes are also without a deal beyond this year. Restricted free agent Jade Gresham’s future is also uncertain, particularly given it is highly unlikely the Saints would receive first-round compensation for him.
Piss off Footscray.

I’ll probably be killed for this on here but I see the strategy for trading out Steele even though as I said it will either make or break the list.

We aren’t looking to contend for another 3+ years which means Steele would be minimum 31 at that stage. Now 31 isn’t old by any stretch but that’s a year older than Seb Ross is right now.

Who knows what his body and form will be like.

If we get for example pick 4 then we have another chance of getting a potential gun to complement the younger core of King Owens Windy etc..

It’s risky and obviously it depends on drafting well but this is what I’d imagine a club like Port Adelaide will do. Sell high rather than not.

Once again I’m not potting Jack, he’s probably my favourite player on our list but I can see why conversations are being had.
The problem us we need more midfielders. Not less. Ok so you bring someone in to replace Steele, that's nit going to help.

Three AFL players earned more than $1.2 million in 2022, with a huge increase in spending helping the average wage pass $400,000 for the first time.
The AFL released its Total Player Payment (TPP) for last season on Wednesday, revealing the average wage across the 659 listed players had jumped to $406,000.

It marked an increase of more than $30,000 from $372,224 in 2021 as part of the total of $257.6 million in AFL player payments handed out.

In total, 12 players earned over $1 million in 2022, a huge jump from just five in 2021.

600K i don't think thats the average
CBA just about to be agreed on 600k will be the average wage. You negotiate a contract with the CBA in mind. Even average, Gresham gets 600k, he could get 700k which is just above average.

We havent traded in too many decent talls of late…
We haven’t traded in too many decent anything! ;)

Guys like Adams were never going to be ready after two years, seems like a waste to have even drafted him in the first place.

“Promising St Kilda forward, Matthew Allison, is rumoured to be a player of interest for North Melbourne. Family ties plus the possibility of greater opportunities are believed to be the motivation behind the discussions between the club and the player’s manager. It is believed that North’s early third round pick would satisfy the Saints should Allison decide on a move.”
They can have him. Honestly, anything we can get for him at this point would be a massive bonus.
Kids going nowhere.

Glad we can move on from the "bytel needs games" talk.

It’s an always a little sad to see players getting delisted and leaving the club, but he needed a really big game during that last senior opportunity that came his way. Was it against Carlton? Unfortunately just doesn’t find enough of the footy.

Tend to agree, can only imagine he had his own targets or KPI's and that he wasn't progressing enough.

You feel like wasting some more draft picks? I’m off talls in the draft late, keep picking running players and trade the talls in IMO.
Have a look at the last line of defence in the All Australian side this year and tell me it’s not worth using late picks on tall defenders

Spot on with this. He’s gone and I’d say it’s because of Henry.
I think someone else will be moved on for Henry , it must be remembered Henry had more 30+ disposal games than Hill or Steele this year so they will be wanting as they say a draft pick between 15 and 25.
To me Henry is the Hill replacement.

Bailey Van De Heuvel from Cats VFL is the KPD we need.

Invited to the draft camp, four clubs into him. I’d contacted the club about him at the start of last year.
200cm 100kg defenders who can clunk marks don’t grow on trees. 24 years old.

Tick, tick, tick.
Why is he in the Geelong VFL side then? Especially @ 24?

Sometimes we can over value a player's capability when they are on our list. When they eventually get cut we think how unlucky they were, but then surprise, surprise no one else picks them up and they just fade into obscurity.

A few names I had high hopes for but who just disappeared from the scene include Siposs, Spencer White, Markworth, Brandon White, even Freeman. There would be heaps of others but their names are now long forgotten.

I think both Bytel and Highmore (if delisted) are capable of a spot on North or the Eagles lists but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get picked up either.
