Probably true but we didn't go back and draft quality under Lethlean. We paid up big for equally as s**t players but on mega contracts at huge cost as far as draft picks goes. I reckon we wasted 4 years under Lethlean's list architecture. It was high risk and he stuffed it up.
He's gone full jump the shark now to mask it… Rosco and the whole 09 gang, getting the band back together.

Richo was such a spud, that was good list still and he did * all with it. Incredible that all we have left from that side is Sinclair, Membrey, Billings and Gresham.
And amazingly the average age and games played of the list in 2017 under Richo was less than this year under Lyon. That was even with 800+ games tied up in only 3 players. 14 players under 10 games.

And as to why we only have 5 players left from that list, its hardly surprising given the annual turnover of lists is around 6/7 players per season.

I suspect it’s going to become “get Charlie Edwards”. Pick will be too low for a Darcy Wilson. Another good performance on the weekend from Edwards.

Footy is a pretty cool industry for the corporates, if you * things up majorly you get promoted instead of sacked… then move sideways to a different club to butcher…

"Sorry about the list and your draft capital, but is it cool if I become CEO now?"
That's not just footy. Once you make it to the upper echelon you're basically there for life.

There's a lot of pissing and moaning on here about trades and draft selections and selling players out cheap and then watching them hit their straps at their new club, all while seemingly missing the glaringly obvious - DEVELOPMENT!!

Ours has sucked for years !!!. Why? Standards. You all heard it come out as soon as RTB joined, the expectations lifted, and players were actually nervous about what the new coach would think of them. Humans are predictable, and most will take the path of least resistance, and do only what is asked or expected of them. If the coach doesn't expect much of you, guess what he gets.

The most basic human need is acceptance. Guess what players deliver if the coach DEMANDS the highest standard of effort, application and professionalism as the basis for their acceptance into the playing group? Drafting and trading deliver you the raw materials for a team, and yes, they are important. But all the kids getting into the AFL have some level of talent, whether or not they reach their full potential and get to fully exploit that talent is entirely a result of the environment they enter after the draft or trade period.

What moves we make this trade period, and which players we select with our eventual draft picks are only part of the equation. How we develop those playing talents and then how we chose to deploy those assets (game plan) are all part of the picture. We need to get it right across the board, and having seen the improvement this year, I am prepared to back the new leadership in their choices. That means that, as an example, if they decide that Howard is tradeable as the benefit of incoming draft picks helps improve our midfield, and the resultant improvement there offsets any detriment to our defence, then I will back them. This is a new regime, and what happened in the past, painful as it may be, is completely irrelevant. It is glaringly obvious that you need to keep playing finals to eventually break through and win the big one. We need to build with that in mind, and if that means developing a list for the next decade around Mitch, Pou, Marcus, NWM, King, etc, then so be it......

We can do that and still be trying to win a flag in the near future, they're not mutually exclusive.......

Half right but we had our opportunity in 2014 to build a premiership wining team around a group of players.

We completely muffed it and went for McCartin, Goddard, Dmac and Lonie .... these guys were never going to be superstars or get us to the ultimate goal under any type of development on the planet.

2014 looks to be one of the strongest drafts in the last 20 years ... we had a complete deck of cards and blew it. Blame lies with the recruiters on this, not the development.

"Ameet has played an instrumental role in regenerating our playing list, leading our recruitment team and providing support and leadership within our football department."

Ameet and Trout were the dynamic duo.

You’re relying on a club media release?

The same media team that brought you ‘the Road to 2018’?

Okey doke.

TBH, Membrey was a delisted free agent thanks to the Swans. So you can't really give Ameet credit for that.

He convinced Skunk to choose St Kilda while we were stuck in the back blocks of Seaford.

Does he get credit for that?

He requested us because he wasnt getting a game there due to Goodes playing on. The above ensured we didn't have to pay a lot to get him, as you said.

My point, therefore, is that it wasn't to Ameet's credit that we got him for next to nothing. It was largely thanks to Sydney for doing the decent thing by him.

On that note, I wonder how Tim is doing. Hopefully OK.

There was 9 other Vic teams he could have chosen… you’ve got to get the bloke to choose your club no matter what his existing club does.

That can't be true!! If anyone has watched tthe kid, and actually said that and meant it, then they lower the IQ of our crowd by virtue of their attendance and should immediately implement a self imposed ban on future attendance at our games!
Don’t pander lol.

There’s nothing wrong with people making early predictions.

Any chance we can open a new thread to moan about things that happened in 2014 and this one sticks to the 2023 trade period.

2014 defined where we are today. Thankfully we are finally emerging and the future now looks bright. I'm excited for the next period, hope we can snare a couple of gun midfielders and/or develop our list into greatness.

Trout and Ameet went into the trade rooms together as a team on trade nights.

Ameet was the boss, Trout his underling.
i saw ameet with trout in state games here. trout looked glued to the game.... ameet not so much. collingwood had a team of recruiters there. we had ameet and trout there.

ameet we can all accept have NFI about talent. he's an administrator not a list manager or recruiter.

It's probably been spoken of elsewhere here but I haven't stumbled across it. To think we went through the Richo years with Kingsley waiting in the wings. Okay, he had to learn the ropes but to think he was at the club for 8 years seems like a wasted resource now. Could've got the gig instead of Ratts.
He has GWS playing a bit like Richmond though, so maybe learnt his best tricks when assisting there.

Fair list to work with though, reckon I could coach a few wins with those players on hand.
