I think there's a tendency at trade period to look at a players last game and go "they stink don't want".

I don't know anything about Jordon, but his numbers from last year were pretty good. Maybe he can improve as a player with some continuity? He'll basically come for free.

Yeah, he's not the guy I'd pick but we'd definitely get a lot more than we would out of Bytel and Leo who were the same age but left out even when we had injuries to cover. With Ross and Jones banged up and not able to be relied on to play 24 games we need cover. Jordon is a fringe player who's had plenty of games in a good side. He's at an age that we have huge holes in too.

We are likely bringing in a guy who would be close to the worst kick in the AFL. Dow kicks at about 35% DE in the VFL some weeks. Not sure the coach is as obsessed with good ball use.

Guys like Mathieson would be best 22 at the Saints easily. If he's pushed to depth we have developed some kids really well.
One of Lyon's oft used expressions has been how we turn 'good looks' into 'wasted opportunities'. Testament to our poor inside 50 entries and conversion.

We shall see. I dont profess to be on the inside on this, but I know how strong their allegiances once were as teens. If those two clubs are showing any love, it will quickly be reciprocated.

It's possible but if Gresh's brother is any good he probably won't be at Carlton and I doubt that he would care about playing for them as much as his pay cheque or length of contract. If Carlton have $600k x 2 and Essendon offer $650 x 4 he's not going to play at the Blues. I can't remember a player ever moving to their childhood team for nostalgia.

Them not being shit might be a selling point though. He's mentioned that he'd like to play at a big club according to some and Carlton are a big club close to a premiership so they have that appeal. If North offered him $700x 4 he might prefer the smaller contract.

FWIW, his brother isnt a complete standout at local level. He has some talent, sure, but if his surname was Smith his pathway thus far would have been different.

I think all coaches get frustrated by stupid decision making but he's always been an endeavour over skills type of coach.

I fully agree we need depth but I just hope they are checking every midfielder on every list, could there be another Horne - Francis , Treleor or Lachie Neale.

Signing players on long term contracts can kill a club , just look at WCE now and even GWS have players on a million a year till 2029 (J.Kelly is currently just about 29 now)
Melb have a very talented list but they also signed Oliver and Petracca to very long contracts which great because it locks them away but if they get a long term injury in there prime there final yrs could be fatal for the club.
Gresham has really not shown anything compared to the hype on him - he may well need a change of scenery to get the best out of him same goes with Billings but getting nothing for them hurts.

I miss the good vibes young gringo that wanted every fringe player in the league taking our list size to 280. I feel like that man just needs a little cheer to erase some bad experiences and get back on the journeyman wagon.

Dow goes at about 65% DE over his career. He’s not a good kick but I can forgive a guy who is using it at pace out of a stoppage. That’s hopefully what he brings.

Carlton seems to have him using it by hand more and getting it to the outside. His production is a bit lower but definitely looks better.

If we get Dow, Jordon and Henry.

Lose only Billings, Gresham and maybe Coffield to get the deals done.
  • I can't see Gresham staying if he wants 800K+
  • Billings is of use to other sides and he isn't in our top 22
  • Coffield is of use to other sides and he isn't in our top 22
Then I think we will be ahead, have an improved midfield and be ready for another dig at the finals.

Liam Henry can play... this excites me to have someone like this wanting to come to us

Henry sure. But otherwise that’s backwards. Change for change sake. Coffield has wayyy more better than the other ins.

im sure he didnt mean a straight 3 for 3 swap, surely some extras would go our way

but as it is i think we keep all our guys & we add at least 2 and maybe 3 of them, all improvements on the 4 delisted

as we cant pull out a miracle list upgrade in 5 minutes it has to be gradual,2021 trade period gave us a big bump along, pou will hopefully continue that,if even one of these 3 can come good & one of billings jones dmac coff clark can get it together it will be another bump forward

i think with zac jones assuming he is not contracted at moment, its written into his contract-BE AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION ROUND 1 OR RETIRE/GO ON INACTIVE LIST,so we can replace him at mid season draft, really sick and tired of him,be available round 1 Zac,the joke cannot continue

Yeah agree
Henry, Jordon, Dow in for Billings, Gresham, Coffield could be a disaster.

Henry has played 3 really good games, Jordon is average and Dow has never cracked 25 touches in 6 years after being taken as a mid at pick 3.

We've had a year of exploration but haven't had a chance to see Billings and Coffield yet who are both very good users, something we don't have a stack of. Gresham I'm keeping unless it's a very good pick in return.

With a shallow draft and heaps of list spots opening up I'd rather bet on keeping Billings & Coffield than flushing for the sake of it with Hill, Ross, Wood, Jones, DMac all on the cusp of finishing their careers.

Just can't see how we get the Henry deal done without massively over-paying, also seems weird that he wants out after coming through their academy since he was a kid.

SOS and Gubby gonna have to get creative. Our Pick 12 wont be anything like that on Draft night. 3 x GC Academy kids and at least one Norf PP (Ben McKay) will see to that

We’ve had crap inside 50 entries for a decade, so it’s not new. The previous regime thought bringing in Hill solves the problem, but they were ignorant of the fact that we don’t have mids who can win the contested ball and win it well, meaning mids that can cleanly win the ball without fumble in contests, and handball smartly to a team mate releasing them into space, only then you’ll be able to make a good next kick.

What we had was mids that fumbles, or get the ball (Marshall included) then hack kicking it forward for very little reward. That’s why getting a Dow who can win the ball and handball well to a free teammate outside will be super valuable.. no more long bombs unless you have to.. He doesn’t even have to kick it that much.

I'd listen to offers for Ross, Wood and Hill.

Maybe not a tonne of interest but I don't know if we'll miss them in a couple of years time, could generate a pick or valuable pick upgrade.

Higgins possibly came to us out of Nostalgia.
