I'd listen to offers for Ross, Wood and Hill.

Maybe not a tonne of interest but I don't know if we'll miss them in a couple of years time, could generate a pick or valuable pick upgrade.

They may be gone in a few years but at the moment they are essential to the spirit and fabric of our young developing team.

Wood has been a mentor to many and a landlord to some. The kids love him.

Hill is the senior indigenous player on our list and was apparently instrumental in getting Henry to nominate us.

Any thoughts of moving those blokes on should be immediately dismissed as to do so would do more harm than good.

Naturally I want to play finals next year too.

However, we only made the finals by one game. If we had lost one more game, or the Dogs with their better % had won more game (and they should have) we would have missed the 8. Though yes Swans really should have missed the 8, but then the Crows really were only one game with a better % behind us.

So one less win in 2024 could see us miss the 8.

On the con side:

If get a shitty fixture next year and he may be hard to win the same number of games.
Suns likely to be better. Hawks too. Overall I think 2024 will be more difficult.
If we trade Howard out, it may help with our future, but in 2024 it will most likely be a negative in winning games.

On the pro side:
Our huge injury run will most likely be better, and so we should have a better best 22 than we fielded most weeks in 2023. Especially in Max and Steele are both fully fit
Our kids will hopeful be better (experience and just bigger/stronger bodies, especially the Poo)
Dow should improve our midfield, and midfield is where we are poorest when compared to many teams
Hopefully we get Henry too, which will help with our run. Beyond that experienced players likely to join us may be useful rather than significant.
Our coaches and players should have melded better.

I would tend to think that we will need to be better just to win the same number of games. Our overall skill level and ball use remains to me a big problem, and if we mainly have the same players playing, then this may also be a problem again in 2024.
Well, Dow & Jordan don't have good ball use, kicking in particular. Look to Byrnes, much maligned for his kicking, but at least he has those bullet passes in his kit bag.
Get Caleb Windsor & Charlie Edwards in the draft for a start, both have burst speed & good ball disposal. Should be in our range for our first two picks. Both a chance to play next year? But, I never get our picks right.

Are you going to use the pick on Dow to pick up Windsor or Edwards?

Highly doubtful....

Higgins possibly came to us out of Nostalgia.

Maybe or it could have been because he was a fringe player and got a long contract and a much bigger pay cheque. Might have made a choice between 2 clubs on the same offer easier but doubt it.

I don't know why it's any more stupid than trading anyone else. It's just an opinion. They are probably all guys who have value higher than what their output will be in a few years. If we really believe that we aren't winning a flag with this list it's that older crew that you trade.

I wouldn't trade any of the older good players because I think we are already a thin list but I can understand why some want to.

St Kilda will be prepared to match a free agency bid from Essendon on Jade Gresham depending on how much the Bombers are prepared to pay him and the compensation pick it triggers.

The Bombers are circling Gresham as well as North Melbourne stopper Ben McKay as part of a double free agency strike to help lift Essendon for next season.

The Saints are keeping their options open on Gresham to see whether a move to Essendon could deliver the Saints a second-round compensation pick.

Out-of-contract defender Nick Coffield, who finished fifth in the 2020 best and fairest but has not played a senior game over the past two seasons, has also attracted interest from Western Bulldogs.

If Coffield remains at St Kilda it would be on a considerable pay cut given his nightmare run of injuries in recent years.

Saints’ list manager Stephen Silvagni is keen to recalibrate the club’s salary cap following a series of big-money moves to attract mid-tier players and retain some high draft picks.

Gresham, 26, is one of the highest paid players at the Saints but was used in a mainly forward role this season, kicking 21 goals from 23 games.

While McKay is yet to make a decision on his future, the Saints are prepared to wait on Gresham’s future until the free agency window opens on Friday October 6.

The Bombers have about $2 million in salary cap room to spend on talent if they wish including a new key defender to bolster the defence and a ready-made livewire midfield-forward to hit the scoreboard.

Essendon coach Brad Scott is keen to explore the free agency market to add more talent at the Bombers without sacrificing their top draft pick (eight).

The Saints wanted to bank more early draft picks this year, but crashed through to the finals in the first year under Ross Lyon, meaning their first pick is further back than many expected at No. 12.

But that could fall past pick 15 due to the three stand-out academy players Gold Coast will take in the first round, shuffling clubs back in the draft order.

It means the Saints could be open to a Gresham move if it can land the club another top-25 draft choice.

The club is keen to add more top-end young talent to add to the wave of a-grade youngsters including Mattaes Phillipou, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager.

DOW SET TO BE ON THE MOVE

Paddy Dow seems destined to find his way to St Kilda as the Blues’ late-season charge gives them trade collateral to get back into the national draft for the second straight year.

Carlton expects Dow to find his way to St Kilda and Zac Fisher to play at Arden Street next year, with both players out of the side but having benefited from recent surges in form.

The Blues have given away their second and third-round picks, having secured Ollie Hollands, Lachie Cowan, VFL Team of the Year member Jaxon Binns and Harry Lemmey in the draft last year as well as summer rookie Alex Cincotta.

Carlton will expect reasonable compensation from the Roos for Fisher given he has two years to run and could secure a five-year deal.

So the Blues could top up their draft hand, then give a future pick to Gold Coast if the Elijah Hollands deal goes through.

The Blues have been keen to hit the draft hard all year but didn’t have much to give up and yet Dow has climbed off the footy scrapheap and Fisher has found form at half back.

Yeah agree
Henry, Jordon, Dow in for Billings, Gresham, Coffield could be a disaster.

Henry has played 3 really good games, Jordon is average and Dow has never cracked 25 touches in 6 years after being taken as a mid at pick 3.

True but if you look closely his "3" good games all came in the last 10 games he has played. In fact he has played 43 games, his first 33 games he averaged 15 disposals a game. His last 10 he has averaged 25. Seems to have taken a huge step up from midway though this season.

I really like him as a pick up. If he is in your team you are going to have extreme pace and I think he has a fair bit of talent and plenty of upside.

So band 1 or 2 or we match. Simple.

Hopefully we get a win with Coff and he stays. Top 25 seems fair for gresh at minimum

We’ve had crap inside 50 entries for a decade, so it’s not new. The previous regime thought bringing in Hill solves the problem, but they were ignorant of the fact that we don’t have mids who can win the contested ball and win it well, meaning mids that can cleanly win the ball without fumble in contests, and handball smartly to a team mate releasing them into space, only then you’ll be able to make a good next kick.

What we had was mids that fumbles, or get the ball (Marshall included) then hack kicking it forward for very little reward. That’s why getting a Dow who can win the ball and handball well to a free teammate outside will be super valuable.. no more long bombs unless you have to.. He doesn’t even have to kick it that much.
We desperately need a clearance player…hopefully Dow can fill the void!

Wood might well play until he’s 37. We should keep that guy for eternity. I’m not arguing in Theo these two though 😁😃

Our of everyone, Coffield is the one I want to keep. His upside is enormous. Despite missing the past 2 years with injuries, I couldn't cop losing him for the guaranteed 2nd year. Especially when we were reportedly offering Brynes 3 or that an offer for James Jordan is more likely to be 3 than 2. Coffield's is potentially elite at his position while I dont think the same can be said for the others.

Band 3 for Gresham would be an insult. I know compo is based off the contract offered but the system is ridiculous if McKay can trigger a top 3 pick for North while Gresh, whose has played more games and had significantly more high quality performances, could only trigger something in the late 20s/early 30s. Even end of first round would be mid 20s by the time all the bids have been made will be a stretch to replace Gresh with a similar quality player.

Where is he getting pick 25 from? Or is he meaning band 2 equals pick 19, then add the academies etc?

Surely we delist Jones. Can't build a team with players who can't get on the park with any consistency. Maybe it's a wait and see how the trade and draft period pans out. But he's OOC and surely hanging by a thread.

Still young enough. Keep him round for a year on minimum chips
