Gresh won't nominate until he knows how much Dons are willing to pay and as we can see by all the reporting that is fluid at the moment and subject to the AFL ticking off any deal around Shiel so no need for him to do anything publicly till all the ducks are in a row. You only nominate once you have a committed offer from the club you want to move to and to put pressure on your current club to deal exclusively with them. The longer he keeps his options open the bigger the potential pay day.
He could also get cold feet and opt to stay , the move to the Bombers is going to put the heat on him to perform on consistent basis.
Still feel he is being pushed into do something that he doesn't want to do and now Saints list management will go with it to get the best deal they can.
Just feel he will end up regretting the move same as Long last year , Nic Martin is there small forward and with Perkins , Davey x 2 , Hobbs , Tsatas all filling roles there at times - Gresham is going to be under the pump.

It’s about the draft.

But you’re not taking a player unless he can add some value. Shiel would be our best Clearance mid

He's exactly the same issue as Gresham, he sprays his kicks. You are replacing Gresham with a less nimble older broken down version on more money and hoping that pick 13 can get us a player as good or better and we won't know what we have a for a few years.

Still seems a bit dumb and moving for movings sake. This looks like trade wanking. If we are so desperate to lose Gresham don't **** around. Just lose him and concentrate on finding the best player with the pick we get. This will take time and energy posturing and butting heads with Dodoro who likes the theatre more than the outcome.

And one more to keep an eye on.

Howard to North.

Just see if something starts to develop now they have additional picks

This my nightmare. We are absorbing a bunch of old hacks and selling off all of our mid tier on the cheap and hoping to regenerate in a shit draft that is heavily compromised. This is Pelican all over again. If Toce doesn't nail this draft we are going backwards.

I also come in peace.

Do we just skip all this nonsense about Shiel, and you guys just take the band 2 compo and be done with it?
End of first round pick - 19 for you guys and away we go.

FWIW I also laugh at the thought of you guys giving us 13 in any deal for Shiel, I think it’s shocking for you. But Gresham also isn’t worth anywhere near band 1.
Handy player but even band 2 is pushing it.

I know you’ll argue “we’ll just keep him and you get nothing” but there’s too much noise, and reported too many places about you guys wanting him out and happy to let him go.
Just because Ross went on 360 and said “they told us not to make an offer, we want to keep him” doesn’t make it so, what else was he gonna say?
“Oh nah we’re pushing him out the door” no worries here’s your band 3 from us at best then [emoji23] it would be bad practice from you guys to state that publicly and not get yourselves a good deal. Band 2 is a good deal, you take 19 and go to the draft or use it in a trade however you see fit.
No one else is paying him band 1 without getting something good back in return so your not gonna go to another club and try get it there, he’s just not worth it.
But a handy player, I’ll happily have him for a fair price.
Anyway, enjoy the day.

Band 2 compo will probably end up a pick in the mid 20s after all the academy and F/S selections are matched. It’s not really a good deal if you look at it.

My gut feel is Saints match band 2. I could be wrong but the coach seems keen to keep him. He’s a class player.

If Bombers want Gresham then they will need to pay up. All the stuff about calling out Saints bluff etc will probably lead to Saints doing that very thing.

so just roll over and take it...instead of getting the best possible outcome??

so you build respect bu rolling over and taking whatever do you? geez gringo, youre all over the place....

I suggest StKilda will be all in on that kid.
We need to get the pick off GC or forget about it so building capital is the game.

He's the only high pick outside McKercher that looks like what we need. If we trade up and don't get him I'm not sure there is much else of interest that we couldn't have picked up in the teens.

No you keep drafting well instead. Pick up some outside talent on the cheap. Carlton traded in a level of players around the good players that they drafted and built okay.

He is completely different to Gresham.

1 he can actually kick 40 meters. Shiel easily kicks 55.

He would be our best clearance mid immediately + the pick to help rejuvenate the list.

You get either all of his contract or the bulk of it off the salary cap in 12 months.

You mean the first round picks they spent on Cerra and Saad?

The ones we can’t afford to trade out.

This is the equivalent of grabbing Jack Martin for free.

They get nothing out of any of that. They just go back to paying Gresham $700k and we have no say in it. It has to benefit both sides or it won't get done. We can threaten to match but I think we've probably already used his compo in our heads and seem to not want to pay him.
Essendon gain Gresham and pick 12 lose Sheil and his salary off his list

Saints gain 13 and Sheil, lose Gresham's salary.
Pretty simple to see.

Plus pick 13 which is where we picked up Naz from.

Don't think it is butting heads, we get an extra high FRDP.
I am not really keen on Sheil, 31, on the down side of his career, a big disappointment at Essendon, but we have the weakest mids in the League and he will be able to get games, maybe even contribute for a couple of years.
Would not be unhappy to keep Gresh either.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was afraid of. Ralphy says something stupid first to make pick 31 for Shiel sound reasonable.

It isn’t. He’s 31.
But that’s to offset the fact they are paying Gresham more to uplift the compo pick.

How do Essendon gain pick 12?

Are you suggesting we give that to them?
Sorry, we get pick 8 in a pick swap.

Essendon 12, Gres and lose Sheil
Saints 8, 13, Sheil, and lose Gres and pick 31 or something.

They have to trade them. The afl will take them back next year. They would be fools not to
Exactly. Which is probably why they’ll bunch them up for higher picks. But they could consider Clark for an end of Rd1 Future, but something back from us. Allows them to “launder” the future handouts.

Yes there's a risk he'll go to the Hawks but that will be weighed at the time.
I think the plan would be to get p4 and keep our current 1st, hence all the talk of salary dumps. If they can pull that off then well done on principle and take who you can get.
