Future second for Dow is overs. He's no guarantee to be best 22 even in a thin midfield. I'd rather take the second in next years draft. There is a very good chance we drop away next year. Could be a very decent pick in a better midfielders draft. I'd try to use picks up later in this draft. It's a bit of a dice roll after about pick 30.

A pick in the late 30s or early 40s. He’s only 23 and his form line is well known.

If it gets us pick 13 & he spends the season at Sandy in the rehab group then I’m more than ok with it.

Getting creative with these salary dumps is the only way for us to compete for top end picks with the expansion franchises& charity cases like Norf.

We are talking big IF's at the moment.

Pick 13 to us is not guaranteed, just rumours.

Suppose it opens the dialogue ... hope SOS and Gubby hold firm and don't trade for just the sake of trading like previous Saints list management did.

Would be interesting to see the name of everyone’s local Chinese restaurant.
We have two, Red Lantern and Chopsticks Palace.
Hope Coff stays.
Good news re Jones.

Jimmy Diamonds’ Burgundy St Heidelberg.

Décor hasn’t been updated since 1977.

Lemon chicken probably been in the fryer just as long.

If hawks want Howard would they do Howard for a swap of firsts? Values him as a late first/early second.

Doubt Hawks would do that. Pick 3/4 will get them an elite talent.

This is the flaw of using the points system to value players early in the draft (I do it as well). The access to the cream can’t be measured in points.

They might think about the deal if our first pick was inside the top 10. But even then I’m not sure they would do it.

What trades have we made just for the sake of it?

And yes, nothing is guaranteed yet.

Hence us discussing what might happen.

So if we trade Dougal, Cordy becomes first choice and then who? Highmore?

Cordy was given a bath in the final.

Seems like a dangerous game.
To be fair though, that's because he got no help from the midfield. If the mids had applied more pressure, then the backing wouldn't have been overwhelmed and out of position.

Howard was given a bath during the season for the same reasons. Our defence is top notch when the players up the field are playing their defensive roles and when they don't our key backs have a mare of a game.

His body has only made it through one full season in his 9 year career. Chasing Shiel who has similar issues seems insane. Are we a retirement home for broken down players? Yet happy to push Coffield out after 2 years with injury that doesn't seem chronic.
Why do you keep saying we are chasing Sheil? It's obvious we are not the ones going all out to get him.

And how is Coff being pushed out when there is a deal for two years offered him?

Weird post.

Got to agree though, can see Jones and if we eat the same.hit sandwich of Sheil both becoming great mates in rehab.

theres not one thing in hawthorn/smitchells trick bag that involves giving up their first round pick, norh melbourne have the same needs & picks to burn
What about Howard to Geelong, of they lose Rats, they'll need to replace him and they're open to trading their first rounder.

Maybe Howard and the Gresh compo pick for pick 7?

ok with that, but when a list manager says"open to trading first round pick"(pick 7 in this case)well of course they are, just dont know what it would really take

Not going to go into it again. Most of the trades made in the Trout, Ameet era sold us down the river and were ill concieved and many in the last minute of the trade period.

I'm just sick of Saints being the retirement village and superannuation fund booster of any washed up player who wants his last hurrah. Its been happening since the early 80's

This salary dump on Shiel is BS, him being in his last year of a contract means there is little point to a salary dump as he only has one year left.

This is nothing like Grundy, Treloar etc. They had years to go on their contract.

Sadly he has a history of soft tissue injuries. Even at the Swans. It’s a shame because he can play.
Yes true. Not a Jones fan but seemed to be over the soft tissue injuries and then got a whack on the knee.
Was very down at training as he knew his season was over.
If we had of made into the second week of finals he would have been available

The interest lies in who/what we bring in this off season.
I’m not fussed who we retain, we’ve got a small list of untouchables then a long list of players who are injury prone, or will just never make the leap.
Wouldnt lose any sleep if Gresham, Dougal, Jones, McKenzie, Clark left as they are all known commodities and have proven they’re not going to move the needle so to speak. Some have high end capabilities but are far enough into their careers to producing week in, week out consistently and they haven’t been able to do that.

People are seriously over valuing Howard, even in a seller’s market. 27 and on very good coin.

We don't know the Essendon TPP going forward, might look good this year but future might be tight.
An extra 750k allows them to front end contracts for players currently on their list but OOC.
Same with Saints TPP, we might have that room as our contracts may have already been front ended and we have the space.

Sheil is not the priority. I suppose if all went as speculated
Dow
Henry
Sheil
Two frdp's
A second dp
Maybe another trade or a supplementary like Hammer.

Would be ok. We won't be flag material, as we don't have a Cheezle, or Wardlow or any of these young mids as North and Gold Coast are gifted them by the corrupt AFL.

I don't think I can name one person who is excited about the Sheil prospect. However if it got us a frdp and he is about for a year or two, it helps our depth in the mids and we get two draftees in the first round.

This is an interim draft and trade period. 2024 needs to capitalise on 2021, 2022, and this one.
