Because we had to give up a better pick than everyone else West Coast were looking to trade with.
We didn't have to, though.

Tell westcoast that if they trade their pick to freo or giants, we will take Allen with our pick..

Call their bluff..

Fills a need?
So we have Rioli, DBJ, SPP, Charleson, Anastasopoulos, Richards, McEntee, as small forwards, plus JHF, Rozee and Butters can also spend time forward and impact the scoreboard.
That's ten small forward types, now 11 with Berry.
That's a quarter of our list FFS!!!
Surely we have to delist at least two of them??????
Isn’t the fact that 3 of them don’t deserve to be on the list a sign that is in fact a “need”. The questionable decision of upgrading mcentee should take nothing away from the excitement of the pick.
The small forward types have dominated the last 2 grand finals, and we’ve been rolling out smalls who’d struggle to get a kick in the ammos

You’re assuming we were bluffed. If the options were we are losing 45 to get the player we want and not lose him to freo, or keep 45 and get a player we don’t want at 16, I’m getting rid of 45.
We shouldn't be picking for need though, and with better players seemingly available, it seems strange to give into a possible bluff.

As I said, Parker should really be talking about the motivation on that after this.

If we don't need 45, we can trade that for a future 3rd, and use pick 1 million to draft Rome.

Not surprised you back this awful list management.

I just don’t claim to be an expert like everyone else. Won’t be quitting my day job to be a list manager any time soon.

Berry is good, wtf is everyone’s issue? The pick 45 the issue? Obviously freo were sniffing around, maybe it wasn’t necessary but perhaps we are looking to take Burgoyne or Barrett and don’t need pick 45 for that .

Chill out, you’re not an expert even if you think you are.

Welcome Cotton Eye
Yep.

Seems pretty obvious to me what happened.

And that was that Freo made an offer to WCE to jump ahead of them - which they passed on to us to feck Freo and enhance their own position a bit - knowing that both Freo and us made a commitment to not take the player they wanted.

We had settled on Berry as our main target of trade week and so made the trade with WCE in later rounds to make sure we get our man.

Argue all you want about whether Berry was the man for our current needs but if you accept the reasoning that he was our best option at 15 then a bit of horse trading in much later picks to make sure we weren't gazumped in getting our main target makes good tactical sense to me.

It seems pretty stupid, it seems we were bluffed. It's fair for people to think the trade is silly, especially when on the surface it is ridiculous. They should be explaining the decision post this first round.
Clubs happily let Academy players slide, or bid with their second pick.

The clubs would be very open with each other about who they're planning on selecting when discussing trades on the night.

Surely the Swans draft one of the Whitlock twins. Armstrong or Shanahan.
Nope. Dattoli. Everyone is passing on the talls.
