With not having much to offer other than cash to prospective players would adding the captaincy be enticing to someone like Warner, McCluggage or LDU? Is it worth a go for an untested leader? Right now our performance history and club status pins one arm behind our back so why not.

We can’t lose Josh Battle to a big club like Collingwood or Melb based on not paying him enough. Interesting that far better clubs than ours are very keen on him.
Well not just that, but if he goes as a Free Agent, then we cannot get a Free Agent in as we would lose the compo.

It would effectively be Battle for our FA.

Mind you a good FA is unlikely as they always choose the bigger clubs.

They’re all second guessing every move they make. Their heads are full with information, even Sinclair can’t make a decision anymore. Misson even said before the game we’re confused about what to do with ball in hand. Clearly over strategizing.

Yep I've been thinking similar, we look confused and muted with ball in hand, like they're trying to crack the code of the gameplan on the run. It shouldn't be that complicated. There's needs to be an overarching message or team ethos which in the first instance, informs what the players should do with ball in hand. So they don't have to think but can play on instinct. Then the more technical elements of the gameplan can be implemented when needed.

Having five guys from the 2023 draft debut is a good sign. If they all make it then it will be a huge step forward in terms of our list build.

Reminds me of those days when we got rid of spuds like Polo and Peake and got games into Brody Murdoch, Nathan Wright, and Sam Dunell
Never did give Spencer White a game.

I just watched Brad Hill interview on Yokayi footy, what a dude ❤️
I reckon focusing on first nations players to trade in...talent and skills win win , and Hilly☺️
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had that idea quite a few times over the last few years.
How can we differentiate ourselves so we're not just a little battler stuck at Marvel with nothing much going for us, and attract some decent free agents?

Make ourselves the home away from home. Edge in on Melbourne/Gold Coast's Alice/Darwin home games. Play in the "heritage" guernsey up there. Plenty of stuff that could be done.

Of course there would be a backlash from plenty of supporters, and there'd be an element of sacrificing your identity. But let's face it, our identity is that we've essentially sucked for a hundred and fifty years... so a rebranding might not be a bad thing - and better than a merger.

Sure, there might be a player exodus when the NT team eventually comes in, but I'm probably going to jump ship then anyway and get on a winner.

Just keep going to the draft over the next 3 years with an eye on Bing / LDU / Callaghan / Brayshaw / Chesser ... as free agents ... and any other gun peninsula boys who may be considering a move back home
SOS and Gubby pulling off a Miami Heat big 3-type coup would be elite.

Calm down Piss-whistle. I can support the club how ever I like. We don't all have to be happy-clappers. We get that you are superior for your blind support and stoicism.

The complaints would stop dead with a flag...their frown would turn upside down....f*ck let's dare to dream... St. Kilda football club could be the starting point for a yes vote for First Nations people being included in the Constitution ❤️
Nas winning the brownlow and Henry winning the Norm Smith in the same year, Sexual ❤️

Never mind Miami, this would be like the Saints getting Gehrig, Hamill, Lawrence, Powell and Callahan, then drafting Roo and Kosi.

What an off-season that must have been!

Thinking off list already

All of Campbell, Cordy, Hayes & Howard likely to stay on , because we will find it hard to replace their types just yet.

1. Allison & McLennan not looking like they will make it.
2. I'm putting Bonner & Stocker together as being cut, to lessen ? the backlash. They are both on this year contract only.
3. Time to let go of Jones, Membrey, Ross & Webster

Byrnes & Paton stay, coz you can't cut too many, unless you can obtain the picks or get replacement players.

Hayes as much as I like him is on thin ice I reckon. Can’t get on the park.

Don’t know much about McLennan but someone one here mentioned a possible debut this season?
Stocker and Webster will not be cut and Bonner doubtful too after one season.

Jones, Ross and. sadly, Timmy will possibly go, and as Brian mentioned, Hayes n very thin ice, purely bc of his body. Although tbh I think his talent has grown commensurately the longer his absence has become. He’s played very little.

The Zeb player will come onto the rookie list, no? Not the main playing list.. who’s on there currently? The Irishman and Bonner? as far as I can remember

Pre-season I thought we still did not have a list that could become a Top 4 list in say 2025, but I though we were progressing well.

Firstly the positive side. Our draft crop of last year looks to be as a group be excellent.

Unfortunately this year we seem to have fallen further off the pace. In part as a number of our older players have gone backwards more quickly than we would have hoped. Some by a lot, and some by a little.

In short our midfield has gone backwards. Plus overall as a team we have too many players who do not use the ball well enough by foot or hand, both in excecution and in where they decide to place it.

MIDFIELD - ON THE BALL MIDS

  • Crouch seems to have a chronic knee. Steele seems to have gone down a cog. So two players who I thought could be the midfield platform that we add to now looks less certain. Jones I though was gone anyway, but this season has just confirmed it. Ross while having had a decent career is now a sign of our midfield not being good enough if he plays, which he mainly does (though is now sometimes being played elsewehere).
  • Dow has missed most of the year, though clearance wise looks ok, but just ok. He can be part of our midfield going forward, but he will not give us the edge.
  • Clark I like as a mid. But staying on the park due to freak injuries he seems cursed with. He will be no gun, but certainly can be useful.
*Pou. While looking better in the midfield now at Sandi, he is still a long way off being a good AFL Level mid. Hopefully with another pr-season we will see abetter Pou, otherwise his role in the 22 may not be as a starting mid.
  • Garcia. A lot to like, but is probably going to be a support mid rather than a gun.
  • windy gets a big tick. He continued to roll out good tagging performances and grew as a mid.

* Henry certainly has shown promise to play as a mid and to connect with them. He looks better there than further up forward.

Wilson. Exceeded expectations. Unfortunately his kicking at times is wanting (Unfortunately, how often do we say this about a St Kilda player). If he can improve his kicking we have found a star. Looks good at wing or HF.

Wood remains a quality wing. Getting older, but is super fit and so should be good for a few years yet.

Hill is Hill. At times super damaging, but at other times wasteful with his short passes. His biggest benefit at present is that he seems to be central to all of our indigenous players being in happy place at St Kilda, and in helping to attract Henry, and maybe other future indigenous players.

Marshall. Without him our year would have been absolutely grim. Competitive beast.

BACKLINE

This is our strength. Even with all the injuries, and Sincs often being used to prop up the midfield, it has remained in the main good.

Sincs year has been diluted by him having to be used to prop up our midfield. But with him and Nas we have two AA level HBF who are good both offensively and defensively. Arie announced last game that he will add to this.

Wilkie while not having his best year remains a star. I think he is at his best when Howard can play FB.

Battle has been excellent. If he goes that is a loss for a backline. Hopefully if he des go he gets us a round 1 pick low enough to secure a quality mid draftee.

Webster has been off and on. Many interruptions to his season though. Paton has been poor and has regressed. Stocker has been fair.

Howard I feel gets bad wrap. He is not a gun, but he meshes with his team mates to create a good backline.

Arie is the back in waiting. I suspect he will be given a solid run of senior games now.

Bonner started with a shocker, but has been ok. If and when we geta best 22 on the park he probably gets squeezed out.

Keeler has shown promise as a tall back in waiting fun for 2025 +. Van Ess is just an unknown due to his continued injuries.

Cordy. While contracted for another year, we should consider paying him out.

FORWARDS

With injuries and suspensions our forward line has been cruelled this season. However overall we remain with a fairly useful and competitive forward line if we can every get them all on the park. The forward line is certainly not our key problem., especially if Caminiti can continue to develop.

Hayes who is the type of competitive beast (like Marshall) we as a team need, but lack. His run of injuries may see him gone.

Membery appears to have reached is his expiry date after an excellent year with us. Owens has been so so this year, but I expect from 2025 on that he will get better and better. He suffered from the goal kicking yips earlier this seas, but seems to have worked his way through it.

Jury remain out on Sharman. Though to be fair to him in the main when he has been in the seniors he seems to get thrown around everywhere. I certainly would be keeping him.

OVERALL

With what we currently have in 2025 we can still have a good backline, a decent forward line, good wings and Marshall being Marshall. But our midfield is going to remain our biggest problem.

So two approaches:
1/ Chase good FA's and trade in good players.
2/ Maximise our draft hand

I doubt we can excecute 1// this draft/trade period.trade. We may get a decent recycled mid from, or another type of player who would be helpful somewhere. So the main, but by no means certain hope, is to try and maximise our draft haul and to land two decent young mids in the draft.

I say by no means certain as that seems predicated on both Battle being able to generate a Band 1 compensation, and us finishing low enough to get the mids we need. Say 2 of Smith, Draper or Lalor.

Now that also means that our main future hope is by adding two kids, and so that means more pain in 2025, though a hopefully gives us impetus after that.

However, we could well have a better 2025 than 2024 as so much has gone wrong this season. But we are not going to be Top 4 unless some truly amazing happens with say many of our young players having major development leaps.

LIST

I would tend to prune hard. I cannot see us being a true contender in 2025 and we need to find more players who can use the ball well under pressure, as well mids in particular.

You know what our deficiencies are, I know this, RTB has basically said this publicly. Unless we can gain more quality players we are only every going to be treading water.

We need to keep churning the list till we find them. We need to back Dalrymple in this. He has been brought in to remodel/rebuild our list.

Dalrymple will be, I assume, not just looking at new talent, but also casting his measured eye over all on our list to decide if they are part of the puzzle, or whether they are just a piece that will never be a fit for us.
