Essemdon supporters' thoughts on Merrett's game last night?
I got the impression he was standing Rozee for much of the night, and didn't have a lot of interest in the defensive part of the game?
Merrett is an attacking midfielder but he still digs in with defensive work. 5 tackles to Merrett, just 3 for Parish and then 14 Bombers with 2 or less.
Their pressuring as a unit is abysmal.

I just thought he could have done a little more to try to quell Rozee, as I noticed him line up on him on a number of occasions, and within 3 seconds Rozee was in 5 metres of space.
It's not just tagging but any semblance of accountable 1v1 midfield match ups (e.g to stop a midfielder on fire) that has diminished over the past decade.
If you're a gun midfielder you won't be getting much attention outside of maybe a couple of games each year.

Tbh probably chuck Butters in ahead of Cogs or Viney, but apart from that this is pretty much how I see it.
McKay has been a better player than both Charlie and Hogan but I don’t think he belongs in ahead of either of them, or in the side at all.
Nick Daicos, Harry Sheezel and Nasiah Wanganeen-Millera will likely make it in later in the year.

Realistically unless your team does a Geelong in 2007 you are not getting 5 Carlton players in the starting 18 of the AA team. You likely would not get 5 Carlton players in the best 22 team.
Or a Melbourne 2021.
