Why are you putting Jones back in defence, with both Milera & Hinge on wings?

Reckon Crouch walks into our best 22.

Maybe he's pre-empting our coaches once again forgetting everything they learnt the previous season.

Jones will play wing.
Milera will play HB.
Hinge could play HB with stints on the wing.
Crouch starts in the team absolutely, hopefully he has a big preseason. If we get a whole season of late 2023 Crouch we will be a much better side.

Wing does look like a bit of a weak area for us though. Suspect Smith plays there to strengthen.

Jones, Soligo & Smith with others rotating through gives us plenty of run & drive imo.

Post draft best 22

Michalanney Butts Worrell
Hinge Keane Milera
Jones Dawson Smith
Obrien Laird Crouch
Rachele Walker Pedlar
Rankine Fogarty Thilthorpe
Keays Curtin Soligo Nankervis
Sloane

Murray and Schoenberg injured

Murphy, Berry, Dowling, Cook, Gollant, Edwards, Taylor wild cards.
I had similar side.

Went smaller with Taylor in for Keane.

I'll go:

F Josh Rachele, Riley Thilthorpe, Izak Rankine
HF Ben Keays, Taylor Walker, Luke Pedlar
C Chayce Jones, Jordan Dawson, Jake Soligo
HB Brodie Smith, Josh Worrell, Wayne Milera
B Max Michalanney, Mark Keane, Mitch Hinge
1R Reilly O'Brien, Matt Crouch, Rory Laird
INT Brayden Cook, Luke Nankervis, Darcy Fogarty, Daniel Curtin

Notable omissions: Rory Sloane, Lachlan Gollant, Jordon Butts, Lachlan Murphy, Ned McHenry, Lachlan Sholl, Chris Burgess, Sam Berry

Assuming Chayce Jones has recovered from his injury but Schoenberg and Murray out

Am I forgetting another long term injury...? Have a nagging thought that I am.

My team feels a fraction smaller than what we typically go with.

Sloane is a certainty and not sure Jones, was he an Achilles or foot? I doubt Nank gets in ahead of Murphy.

My Rd 1 side:

B: Hinge - Butts - Michalanney
HB: Milera - Worrell - Jones
C: Dowling - M Crouch - Soligo
HF: Pedlar - Walker - Rachele
F: Rankine - Fogarty - Thilthorpe
R: O’Brien - Dawson - Laird
Int: Curtin - Keays - Nankervis - Murphy
Sub: C Edwards
Emg (from): Smith, Gollant, Berry, Sloane, McHenry, Burgess, Himmelberg, Borlase, Strachan, Cook, Parnell, Keane, Z Taylor

Zero chance of making my side in first half of 2024: Schoenberg (inj), Murray (inj), O Ryan (development year), Bond (behind too many others and no standout AFL traits), Hamill (AFL career likely cooked by concussions), Sholl (delist as soon as contract is up - not an AFL player).

I suppose my main point of difference is preferring both Nankervis and Dowling over Smith. It’s not like Smith had an overly poor 2023, but nobody will ever convince me that he stands up in big moments in big games at all, so I’d prefer to go in a different direction pretty much permanently now and see what we have in Dowling and Nank. I’d also like Milera and Jones to be our 2 starting half back flankers because I think they complement each other very nicely. I’m fully aware that in reality, Smith is going to be in the starting 18 in Rd 1 unless he’s injured. Meh.

I’ll probably cop flak over selecting Murphy too, but I definitely think we need a player in that last bench spot who can play both in the midfield and forward half, AND provide genuine leg speed and pressure. I’m no big Lachie Murphy fan, but until we bring another AFL-ready player onto our list with these traits (Rankine is great at this, but Rachele’s pressure is vomit, Fog, Tex and Thilthorpe are pretty useless in this regard, Pedlar is ok at this in short bursts, Crouch has zero speed, and Dawson and Laird aren’t exactly speed demons either), Murph will continue to get a gig. It’s possible that Edwards can take over this role, and if he demonstrates an ability to do those things in preseason (we know he has the speed), I’m all for bringing Edwards into the 22 for Murphy, with someone like Sloane, Smith or McHenry to slide into the sub role.

Curtin’s versatility should enable us to use him as a mid / back flanker / wing against teams with smaller forward lines, and a back pocket / key back against teams with taller forward lines in 2024. Can hopefully be a regular member of the side from Round 1, but we must look after his body so 16 games total in his first year is probably a sensible goal to have in mind.

Need someone in our backline with pace to cover the pacey smalls. Jones is pretty good at that, Milera isnt overly good defensively. I hope Crouch isnt in our best 22, he's too slow and is a liabilty when the oppo get the ball in the middle. Laird can do his role and is better at it. Its time to start playing Soligo, Pedlar, Rachele with Dawson and Laird in the middle. Rankine to pinch hit in there as well.

Crouch was quite a bit more effective than Laird in that pure inside role when he came back into the side, IMO. Played smarter when it came to winning clearances

A new year might see different results but Crouch should definitely be in the 22, round 1
