Arguably the most intriguing aspect of Adelaideās selection is how it reshuffles its defence ā an area it needs to improve in ā without Lions recruit Tom Doedee and Nick Murray, whoāll miss the start of the season while he works his way back from an ACL injury. Top draft pick Daniel Curtin is pushing his case to play Round 1 after impressing over the pre-season, even despite jarring his knee in a setback thatās limited his training loads. The likes of Jordon Butts, Josh Worrell, Mark Keane, Elliott Himmelberg and James Borlase will also push for the same spot. Recruit Chris Burgess will push for senior opportunities, but heāll be competing with Riley Thilthorpe for the back-up ruck role, for having both players, Darcy Fogarty and Taylor Walker all in the same forward line feels top heavy. And what about Sam Berry? Falling out of favour last year and playing only four AFL games, it shapes as a big year for the out-of-contract midfielder. Matt Crouch revived his career and now figures to again start in a midfield that will look to give more opportunities to the likes of Josh Rachele and Izak Rankine to add more pace. We've left Rory Sloane out as he continues to recover from his nasty eye injury, giving Luke Nankervis an opportunity ā but donāt rule out first-round draftee Charlie Edwards, whoās spent time training as a half-forward for the Crows this pre-season. Harry Schoenberg wonāt be there for the start of the season as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles.

Anyone posting an expected round 1 team that doesn't include Sloane is kidding themselves. It's fair to not include him in a preferred side, but there's zero chance he won't be in it.

Of course your most talented, dynamic and game breaking players need to be around the ball
there's always a kid to leave out. You just watch Sloane roll through the interviews a couple of weeks out saying he's feeling better than ever and is 100% right to go and, "will definitely be putting my hand up".

Sounds like Sloane won't start, and agreed, let's hope for early wins so the selectors don't decide we need his experience on field.
I can't wait, very optimistic for this season
I need to see us play before I get optimistic. It's not going to just happen all of a sudden.

Not sure he plays round 1 , had alot of interruptions with hammies and eye and not a walk up start anymore

His narrative on Sloane has changed immensely since the contract extension.
I love Rory but he should be left to a role playing in our SANFL side if not retire for his quality of life.
