Hope he stays on as a coach once he hangs the boots up. He could be invaluable overseeing the development of Dear, Ramsden (?), Schubert and Nairn.

Like Punky he'll have plenty of suitors elsewhere and like Punky it might be in his best self interests to coach elsewhere outside of the Hawthorn system.

Would love to have him at our club forever though if he's thinking of getting into coaching after his playing career is done.

You watch Ollie Greeves highlights and there is a lot to work with, he is a big bodied mid for his age, great height, good kick for goal and has sticky hands when marking. Endurance, stamina, ability and motivation to work both ways and defensive pressure will be the area of focus to improve.

Lets hope this young man can take being a rookie pick as motivation and the chip on his shoulder and show everyone what he can do

AFL: Oh....we spent all the budget on the main draft - get the intern to do rolling twitter updates and just give Cal one of the spare lapel mics, she'll do.

Unc has already had his 1 year sabbatical at the Lions so he can stay forever 😂

Rookie contracts are 1 year (?) so he will have to work his butt off to show that he's worth it.

I love what MM has done in this years draft - absolute masterclass! Massive upside in all picks with Greaves being the icing on the cake. Cant help but think the extra second rounders will help us package up something genuinely enticing for Humphrey

What he has done for the club since taking over from Wright has been phenomenal

Hope they start planning soon for the statue of sleepy to go alongside the legend Kennedy 😀

I have heard a couple of people today say that the rumour regarding his interviews was that he was overly nervous and anxious. Apparently he was that excited and passionate about being picked in the draft it worked against him, as he was all over the place in the interview and didn't come across very well.
Only a rumour and I'm not sure if clubs would look past him for this reason. I don't think the Hawks would take the gamble if there was a more serious off field issue.

So to all the night 1 dummy spits we didn't take a mid... We went and took 3 night 2 and rookie draft.

This is why you don't reach for perceived need with early picks. There wasn't any notable mids at our first 2 picks (albeit Nairn has scope). We nailed two sliders being considered around pick 10-12.. Schubert and Dear long term is just so exciting.

We then traded up for the best mid in the middle part of the draft.

Greeves might not make it. But Gee that's an elite rookie pick to find out.

Apologies for the late message, wasn't able to log in and comment.

IMO great draft by the Hawks and work to get those extra draft picks in 2026.

Pretty happy with the draft haul and our wheeling and dealing.

Interesting write up on West Coast and how poorly they handled their trades and missed out on a number of their academy players. I love this sort of analysis and insight.

May have already been covered above but here is the link.

That ESPN analysis is so much better than that from the apprentices at Fox Sports.

I think it’s very clear that we went for potential upside in this draft.

Nairn is unique. 188cm with good speed, elite skills and elite contested marking. Being an undersized marking third tall likely saw him slide. I’m convinced that we see him as a midfielder. Was only introduced to the state program this year.

Schubert has a late December DOB. Marks everything that comes his way in one action. Uses his endurance and mobility to impact up the ground. Kicking needs work and will need to add size to his frame.

Dalton was interesting. Ball accumulator with elite endurance and surprisingly agility. Broke both his wrists which impacted his year. Needs to work on kicking, but by all reports will leave no stone unturned.

LeRay was good value so late. He’s dual footed, takes marks, has reasonable zip for his size (188cm) and can play multiple positions. He will need to improve his endurance, which likely contributes to his lower accumulation. Only focused on football this year.

Much has been stated about Greeves. Rated a top prospect but slipped due to concerns around athleticism and character. As a rookie, has massive upside if he’s willing to work hard.

Very happy with this draft haul, especially because we were also able to improve our draft hand next year.

Greeves is a gun again! In all seriousness too good a natural footballer not to be on an AFL list. Welcome Ollie!
It's a great result for the Hawks and Greeves.
Not going to lie, l did fist pump when l watched the rookie draft and the Hawks selected him.
A lot of the draftees have areas they need to work on, l just thought Greeves was getting a little hard done by compared to others.
Really good draft by the Hawks for 2025 and getting things in place for the trade/draft period in 2026.
