Genuine question.

If we front-end a players contract and then trade him, do we get recompense for the money paid out in advance?
You take on the contract so the club they are traded to picks up whatever is left.

Contract can be renegotiated between new club and player in the future.

There's been some things to like and things to dislike.

We've played some absolutely horrendous football... again. With absolutely shocking skills and decision making.... again.

The positives for me are

Hall. Just a great pickup for the club.
Garcia. Taken his game to another level. We've been lacking in the midfield and Hugo looks to me like he can make a difference.
Tauru. Could be anything.

I think Higgins overall has had a very good season. Wilkie has been Wilkie again.

Obviously with Nas his form has skyrocketed. If he stays, his improvement has been a huge positive. If he leaves and we get shafted, it's all a bit shit really.

Our list management strategy is confusing at best.

Our fitness and medical team needs a review.

This whole Nas deal after the generally shitty season is draining. I know players need to look after themselves but I'd like to see some commitment and loyalty to the club. I'm not sure how responsible Sos is for that not being more apparent.
I can see the list management strategy, i actually dont mind it but it potentially goes to shit if Nas goes. Anyone over 30 is redundant at that point really.

Just doing some reading on the pre season draft. I don’t think nas can refuse medical sat other clubs because the afl would consider that draft tampering. So I doubt any club can just walk him to the draft. He can choose to sit out for 12 months but that would cost him 1.4 mil. Also I would destroy Ben Williams reputations. Or am I dreaming?
Its been discussed alot on the Nas threads, the PSD is a nuclear option all round.

If he goes there West Coast would take him without a medical and let him sit on the couch for a year, they would be buying draft picks and worst case he gets them 2 firsts.

Sucks for us, sucks for Nas, sucks for Port.

It wont happen.

Honest question. If it got to the point where a trade couldn’t be struck and the only option was the pre season draft. What are the odds nas would say **** it and just resign with us rather than sit out for a year

99% TBH.

If he requests a trade it almost certainly gets done, lets not pretend that we can play hardball with the threat of him just re signing, shitty way to operate and wed lose any goodwill with Nas.

But if port really come to the table with **** all, its an easy pitch to say "they clearly dont think youre worth more than Whitlock and a future (or whatever), we just cant do that" id put my house on him staying.

Mate, I think Tony’s in his fallout bunker until Round 1 next year.

Tony and everyone involved with players contracts at the club. Lets hope we are all jumping at shadows, but the odds of Nas leaving are growing by the day.

The club will go on if Nas choses to leave. He and Battle are very different situations but we can't keep leaking quality players.

You have to wonder whether the current playing group really believe they will ever achieve success under the current plans and management? I think it's a question that Barratt and Dilena need to ask the playing group.

If Nas goes, it’s in Port’s best interest to get this done and done quickly. They’ll lose Butters next year anyway to FA. So this will be the year to trade him to extract best value. So, Port will have assets. The question is whether Butters will come to us or not.

Another thing to remember is that the youth are drawn to the watchable impactful players. A player like NAS, coupled with a team that competes and wins consistently, would inject new young blood into our membership to carry us into the 2030’s.

Having said that TDK can have the same impact. 6”8. Blond. Blue Eyes. Mesmerising.

I hope the club understands it's standing at a series of very important sliding doors. We need to ensure we open and close the right ones this off season. It will have a generational impact on our future.

I desperately want to believe the club is reviewing and reassessing all aspects of the business continuously, rather than just mindlessly trudging down a pathway because someone thought it was a good idea in April.

It is probably worth considering that if Nas has committed to St Kilda for two more years, and given how many trades we have up in the air at the moment, that we may have asked Nas team to wait until the off season to ensure we can work the numbers to deliver the best possible outcomes for the club as well as for Nas, Marshall and Windy.

As I said that’s what I would like to believe.

Agree, we look a completely different club to 4 weeks ago.

New sponsors coming onboard, great media coverage and positives vibes all round.

Where we were in April now looks a completely different picture.

We have positive momentum now and the club needs to adapt to this position we are in.

If we start dropping players now we could lose all that positivity and it could turn bad as quickly as it turned good.

I agree- it's a season where the club has gone nowhere again.
Disagree actually.
Haven’t moved up the ladder certainly. But we’ve blooded a fortune of youth and found out a lot about them. It was the year we had to have. I’m hopeful of a big jump next year - especially with King and Pou back again.

I'm adding that to my standard dialogue responses.

"The lawns need doing babe"

"Yeah sure honey... in the fullness of time"
When will you stop refreshing the "2025 List Management and discussion - part 2" thread, your family misses you

Seriously, without a capable enough midfield, mid-ladder finish is best you can expect from a young and developing list. Let’s hope like hell we address the midfield including the ruck situation.

Tom Morris “no one knows what nas wants to do, not even his closest friends. All 3 clubs are confident that he will be there (at their respective clubs)”

Sounds like Benny Williams is maximising his clients value.
Sounds like Williams is telling all of the clubs different things.

He’s leading two of them up the garden path.

I think you have to be able to see both sides of the argument.

Weve gone backwards in the wins column and ladder position, its very hard to argue thats a positive. Injuries have again been ****ed and ruined any real shot we had at building a season and weve played some ****ing deplorable footy.

Conversely we have seen more from some of the kids and weve uncovered a few gems (and seen Nas go full super Saiyan).

If we keep Nas then the dees game and whatever we build from here could be a critical mass point. Conversely we lose Nas and were probably not improving all that much next year.

We seem to be banking on Max and Pou just becoming what we all hope they could be, i get it, but its not assured.

He won’t.
It’s that whole big club thing or a Cotton on franchise.
We all know this.

Something I’ve been thinking about too.

Purely my opinion, but surely we’re hoping he comes to the decision to stay on his own. Before we turn around and say, in all honesty Nas, we’re not going to trade you unless we’re over compensated for your departure. I’m the event we’re not, we’re sure you’ll be happy here for another 2 years.

It was interesting hearing King and Cornes talk about the possibilty of Nas going a week or so back. I'm not a fan of Cornes, but it sounded like there was a genuine concern about how bad this situation is for us, and how we're likely to get screwed over. He might not like us but even he can see that us losing him is bad for the game.

My point is that improvement is not always linear. Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.

I will admit that if we’re in the same position this time next year, that will be a concern. But I’m not actually surprised about where we are this year.

Respectfully we have to do the linear discussion alot.

Our projection this year was supposed to be building not sliding.

All the pieces are in place now, the injuries helped unearth some players and positional changes but i cant really see how anyone gives this year as an improvement.

They have the assets - they just won't consider using them and the assets themselves can veto their use.
In which case, they have no assets.
