They haven't been rebuilding the whole time. The period of trading away draft picks under Ratten set the club back 5 years. Also bringing in free agents like TDK doesn't prevent you from bringing in young talent because we aren't giving away any picks (like we did for the Hill trade + others).

Clearly the club now thinks they are in a position to start complementing the young players with talent from other clubs. When we did it under Ratten we didn't actually have any young talent to complement. Time will tell whether they are right to think we are ready for that. Crucially though, we will still have all our first round picks if we bring in Aleer and TDK so we aren't tying our hands completely.

However, in saying that, if we do retain Nas I would definitely be expecting improvement and more Ws next year. The next two years are crucial for us. If they are failures, clearly the strategy went wrong.
We’re still a couple of drafts short of where we need to be.

TDK is a good move apart from the money which is probably wrong anyway. The thing with TDK is it’s a two part play that makes sure we don’t need to find a ruck when we’re in contention and sends Marshall out for a pick.

If he plays really well it’s a small gain it’s not moving the needle like landing Callahan or another top mid would. I’m actually not against bringing in older guys for year or two. If you lack cover and someone’s available without costing much it can be pretty effective.

I hope we keep our high draft picks but I’m not against bringing in more talent during trade week.

If they trade out Windhager it seems to be defying and kind of build and more just an exchange program. They are running out of time and need to produce. This is a 5 year build. If we start chopping into that we are pushing it out further. We need a disciplined plan not another scattergun approach
I, for one, hope they retain Windy and if I had to guess I think they probably offer 50k per year more and sort of meet in the middle of the current offer and what his manager is asking for. But as much as I love him and think he is crucial to the club culture, we can't just bend over to every player manager's requests (unless its for a generational player like Nas). Maybe they were asleep at the wheel when negotiations began with Windy but where it currently stands it would be stupid to just submit to his manager immediately now. Also they said on Gettable that he is very loyal so I would still be shocked if an agreement isn't reached.

Media will simultaneously say Nas is very private and no one knows anything, to having many sources of info.

You can tell it’s bs because he says he had a few calls, who the **** has information and thinks “gee I know who needs to hear about this right away, Gerard Healy”. He’s probably listening to his his own verbal notes he recorded to remember some commentary zingers

I was a little concerned until I saw this post, when I finally realized it was Gerard Healy, not Whately.

He most likely just saw the comments Hinkley made 2 days ago and changed his mind lol

I actually quite like Gerard as a commentator but he really does strike me as the type who only has the loosest grasp on technology.

Just like my mum tends to believe almost anything that's posted on Facebook, wouldn't surprise me if he can't really manage all his notifications; saw something random on a WhatsApp chat group, mistook it for a text from a mate and then when Kane just did the slightest prying all of a sudden it was like 'I don't really know anything'.

I agree with this but I think the positive of the TDK move is that is isn't actually preventing us from going to the draft again (not to mention that we HAVE to spend the money and if we don't it will be spent on no one). Also, reportedly one of the things that stopped Callaghan from really considering our offer was that he didn't want the pressure of being 'the guy'. Now that TDK has taken the deal, it should make it easier for us to get other free agents, compounded with the fact that winning more games will also help.

I would just add someone usually quite a few are unhappy at most clubs around this time of year.

Clubs move on, lists need to be refreshed and that means players will be traded and delisted. I’d heard from an excellent sauce that at least some of the players mentioned weren’t happy.

Lyon didn’t say that’s untrue except about Wilkie and even then he can love the club and be going nowhere yet still express concerns.
Didn’t Lyon say that wilkies concern was retaining Nas and he addressed it by answering “absolutely” (to the question: can we retain him?)

Ross then said he also shared those concerns

Because its not every day you come across the opportunity to acquire a potential #1 player of their position in the competition for zero draft capital

Financially we're overpaying but that's to ensure we don't have to give up the regular 2x first rounders for a proven AFL player, potential superstar

We have been saving cap space for years to have this opportunity - hence why we're the only club in the running for his signature (apart from the cheats at Geelong). It's pretty much a salary dump

Then add on the potential rule changes for next year - jumping rucks. That's exactly TDK's forte. Then the extra interchange - you can afford to have 2 rucks in the same team

Ross said during the week he believes with these top-ups we can spike and enter premiership contention with our CURRENT senior core. You can call it lack of patience, but I think it's the start of a period of sustained success given the kids we have coming through

He’s not though is he. He’s 25 and not yet a top 10 ruck. Jack Billings could have been the best player in footy too.

Good he’s got what he asked for and now needs to produce. Should hold him to it.

That some players are unhappy which is pretty well known.

I don’t think he’d be that concerned somehow it hadn’t been tied into the Nas narrative. You yourself have talked about Marshall to Geelong for example.
I rewatched the entire segment today. I think the only thing he didn’t destroy was that he wasn’t interested in going down player by player of the reported unhappy group.

So he spoke of Marshall and Steele and said contracted and staying.

Had no interest in hearing Howard or Butler and just acknowledged Windy was OOC- which could be interpreted as the reason for his unhappiness from Ross.

He then spoke to general if we had such an unhappy place why are they fighting out games and causing the greatest ever 3/4 time comeback. Etc.

So at worse it’s nothing out of the ordinary of a football club at this time of the year.

What a roller coaster 😳

You must have missed the 4th qtr v Melbourne in the game recently. Can't blame you, we were nearly 8 goals down at 3/4 time, I wouldn't have watched either.
Apparently in spite of Lyon stifling freedom and creativity they scored 9 goals to zip including a final goal from the centre square with a remarkable play from a player Lyon had thrown forward.

Who would have thought our team of automaton robot players could do that with the crushing burden of dour unwatchable Lyon coaching.
Proves to me we are becoming capable of playing both shut down and attacking footy.

And as the list gets older and more experienced, we will be able to get the balance between the two better and hopefully we’ll see more of the attractive brand.

Don’t stress Dodo will be better anyways.

Its another correlation instead of causation.

Nas might be going to Port.

Windy might leave.

Therefore

Nas and Windy, both going to Port.

Ignore that Windy is a Vic boy, with zero ties to SA, that Port surely dont have more dollars than us and dont have the trade capital for one let alone both. All irrelevant to the "trust me bro" types.
And that Port is getting an untried coach and is currently on the road to nowhere.

So I just want to take it back to the champagne cork that was popped, I know I’m not adding much to the thrilling conversations going on here but I am a heavy copium addict. Was that like, a potentially legitimate sign of something to do with NAS or windy? Or was I just witnessing another stroke of the fable circle jerk
