2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

No reason why Saints can’t be the next Geelong for the next 15-20 years. If Nas stays long term and the Saints can rocket up the ladder no reason why it can’t be a big destination club like Geelong and Collingwood. Need to think big.

A very aggressive strategy this trade period but worth a risk.
Not a complete fantasy. Moorabbin facilities now excellent, AFL players want to live Bayside (bit like Geelong on surfcoast) and we must be looking at least strong finals chance over next few years. Seen it all before with Saints but one decade they will get it right. Why not this one?

Delicious.
Or did he never followed them in the first place?

it comes up sometimes after ive replied then tried to send, ive got in the habit of copying the whole reply, because when i get back to it half is missing

Chuck some cash in. Get rid of ads, get rid of pop ups, screen clutter, smooth performance. Otherwise it is just another completely free service that runs on the smell of an oily rag.

If we get him I really hope you're right. I just don't want any more past his best, injury prone recruits who's cost is too high compared to his upside. D.Hannebery for example. Third rounder for Ryan then okay. But not more.

Hanners was genuinely broken down, He could barely waddle, Sydney gave him up cheap because he was on a huge contract and wanted him off the books. Ryan missed the first 2 games this year and finished the year in good nick.

Hannebery was worth a try and I'll defend him forever

He really wasn't. I think the AFL asked Lethlean to clean up Sydney's cap space for them. Now we'd get a FRDP for cleaning up their cap space for them.

Can't see Steele getting us more than a third rounder. Late Second at best. I think Ryan would cost similar.

Flanders for our future first plus a third rounder back
Aleer for future second
Ryan for third rounder
McKenzie for this year's first plus second rounder back

Leave us with a second and third plus whatever we get for Steele and /or Marshall (but prefer to keep)

Jesus, Steele isn't what he was but third round pick is insane. If Steele is a third rounder Aleer is worth a pick in the 50s. Aleer is 25 Steele is 29. At his age Steele was dual AA player.

Well if that's true then I hope Mr. Aleer is off to Port.

Unless he comes cheap. I don't think he necessarily plays round one next year. He's still a developing tall and if he ever comes good he looks exciting. I just don't want to pay much for him. Looks a third rounder at best. To me you are getting a guy around Ari Schoenmaker level. Lots to like but far from a walk up best 22 player. JSOS takes a spot in our back 6 and makes us better now but probably starts to slow down in a couple of seasons.

Firefox my friends. U Block origin, privacy badger, sponsor block.

Stuff google.

Altho im getting big blank spaces on BF now where the ads should be. That's new. And annoying.

Yes, it was worth it.

I'd rather be embarrassed that we paid Hanners way too much for too long to win us a game then be embarrassed because a twitter account counts how many days since we've won a final (7,649 for those wondering how long it's been for Essendon).

It was a really poor strategy to chose a sugar hit instead of doing it properly still. Should have gone back to build up via the draft then. We'd hopefully be mirroring Freo and Adelaide who did it the proper way while we were topping up.

Hopefully we have it right this time and we are closer to a flag than we were back then. We at least have a lot of potential internal growth that we lacked then.

Saw a post on Twitter that was absolutely adamant that Gresham had played his last game for the bombers. Please, for the love of god, not gresham

I legit feel bad for Gresh. His development at AFL level has been pretty poor.

Played as a mid in the juniors and then got shunted into the forward pocket at AFL level.

I appreciate that his size means it's gonna be hard to compete with guys like Cripps & Bont week after week but he really should be the cream on a midfield cake.

Stick him on a forward flank for the Dogs instead of Arthur Jones or Anthony Scott and he's a far better player.

Also, who the f**k else were we going to pay? Billings, Dunstan, Newnes etc all made a great living.

People here have been screaming for a decade for us to go and recruit more mids. We get an AA one, and everybody complains "not that one." We had to spend the money, and he is the only one that said yes. Plus when on the park, he was great

Also, I have a lot of issues with the last admin (we all do). But they absolutely recruited great people and leaders. Ryder, Hill, Wood, Hanners. These blokes in the chargerooms are the reason why players like NAS, Sharman, Marshall etc. are what they are now.

Those recruits helped fill the hole that Lenny, Roo and Joey left, and that we could never fill internally. Every one of those 4 recruits is worth every cent we paid them, and happy with them getting contracts as long as they did. If people judge payment of those 4 based solely on their onfield performance, then you are really missing the point.

Should have paid a pro recruiter with the money and found a football department head with a plan. We were drifting aimlessly. 2020 was a really abnormal year that favoured us and it would have been a extremely unlikely for us to even make finals if not for the short games and our luck at finding ourselves in a better spot than other clubs.

This current rebuild should reward us with a sustained period of competitiveness if it comes of as it should. I rate that higher than winning that final.

Injury really lost him his weapon too. His burst and evasiveness were his weapons early. Without that he's really up against it.

Yes and no. He was developing nicely prior to he ruptured his Achilles.
Unfortunately, unless you’re a manic preparing, they’re probably the hardest injury to overcome both physically and mentally.

If you look at a best 23 for next year and assume JSos, Aleer, Ryan and one of CMac/Flanders then it’s very hard to see more than one of of Boxshall, Garcia or McRae playing and only two of Hill,Wood, Wilson or Henry.

VFL should be strong.
Would love to see Pou played in that same role McRae has played through the second half of the year with lower game time but through the middle. Will allow him to be powerful and look after him a bit more.

To me Phillipou plays forward with bursts on ball. Flanders plays HB/mid changing up with Nas. Macrae and Garcia as inside mids. Steele really has to swap up with Phillipou or get traded out or depth IMO.

The wingmen can also play high HF. Probably Hill's best role and Wilson looks like his natural successor. He's a genuine scoring threat inside 50. Henry looks like he's a fair way off best 22 still at this point.

His goal conversion and disposal are probably the worst I’ve ever seen, and he plays a role where that aspect is expected to be good I thought he was the next Gary Junior when he started. He made good coin, hope he’s ok.
