2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Saw a post on Twitter that was absolutely adamant that Gresham had played his last game for the bombers. Please, for the love of god, not gresham
He can be the small forward GC wants.

  • Saints get Flanders
  • GC gets Gresham and picks for academy players
  • Essendon gets stuffed

TDKs first half of the season was elite. Be it injury or mentally checked out. His second half was poor. But if he buys into the fabled Ross work ethic - then he delivers a full season that’s AA level.

JSOS, weirdly enough - I really rated his work at CHB for Carlton. He is a poor man’s Battle. He would be a very good addition - if Fit. That’s the key part.

Aleer - I prefer JSOS as he is a free agent. Even though Aleer is more a traditional key back in size and has the elite athletic attributes.

Ryan - I’m a fan of Ryan. He is unique to our entire list. Henry closest but doesn’t have the overhead game that Ryan has and that’s what makes him appealing. As long as it’s low cost. It’s a good addition.

Flanders and Cmac - Flanders makes us better instantly. It’s really hard to ignore his work playing midfield last season. I like the good stuff Cmac does and his kicking whilst acknowledging he hasn’t come on as expected. Give me Flanders, but both make us better.

Don’t believe the Curnow rumours.

Can’t see how all that gets done and retaining Marshall or Steele or both?
I just happened to find close to a dozen Stav’s. You’re welcome

If you look at a best 23 for next year and assume JSos, Aleer, Ryan and one of CMac/Flanders then it’s very hard to see more than one of of Boxshall, Garcia or McRae playing and only two of Hill,Wood, Wilson or Henry.

VFL should be strong.

Would love to see Pou played in that same role McRae has played through the second half of the year with lower game time but through the middle. Will allow him to be powerful and look after him a bit more.

Regardless of the hype, at the beginning of the 21st century, nobody wanted to go to Geelong, once they became a decent team and has continued success, they attract plenty of high profile recruits. They are not a bad model to emulate.
No reason why Saints can’t be the next Geelong for the next 15-20 years. If Nas stays long term and the Saints can rocket up the ladder no reason why it can’t be a big destination club like Geelong and Collingwood. Need to think big.

A very aggressive strategy this trade period but worth a risk.

There’s too much positivity around to
Totally different situation. Hannebery was cooked after 200 games being smashed as mid for the Swans and was 28 when he started playing for the Saints. Boyd was recruited in 2014, played nine games in his first year and 52 out of a possible 88 after that. If Hannebery had played 52 out of 88, instead of 17, then that would be a different conversation. Not apples and apples.
Hanners knee was the only injury he had in Sydney.

Didn’t have a soft tissue issue until he joined us.

That & the ankle that he did ‘tripping off the step’.

Is everyone else having a whole lot of trouble posting on here, and finding it a massive pain in the ass lately?

Like every few minutes the page refreshes (saying there was a problem reloading the page) while you’re in the middle of typing a post, and this box you’re typing in then comes up blank, and that ads keep coming up all over the screen (especially when typing, moving the box you’re typing in all over the place), and regularly when you’re typing, the screen freezes, and it takes like half a minute to type one word?

Are others experiencing this? It’s like being back in the bad old days of dialup. Can take like 3 or 4 times as long as normal to write a post, especially of any length.

It’s becoming intolerable.

I think we have enough half forwards in the AFL squad; Hall, Hill, Henry, Wilson, Pou, Ryan, Collard

Would be a nice addition to the Saints VFL team though especially if Ross makes it clear that if you can stop being a clown for a year then we might give you a chance
Reckon only 3 of those are genuine half-forwards
Henry & Hill are wingers
Hall & Pou are inside mids
Yes Hall is good in there, but he is a better mid.

Their coach is hopeless.
I don’t know why Voss even wants to stay. He’s going to have to produce a miracle next year to get an extension…maybe 15 wins and a prelim might do it. But the list is falling apart, and club morale is in the gutter.

His continuation is going to be worse than the Hinkley experience this year I reckon.

Such a gutless move by Carlton though. Voss needed to be moved on, and now the players are voting with their feet.

Did u watch the game? To suggest Hanners was the difference is outrageous.

I remember Geary was huge, monstering Caleb Daniel in the qst qrt. Paddy Ryder was massive, Hunter Clark saved us late.

Can't remember 1 moment of significance from Hanners. I am sure he was okay, but his baseline was fricking low, just running out there was considered a massive victory at the time.

It blows my mind the lengths people will got to to defend the Hannebury trade. Ffs, he was known to have major drug addiction issues at the time. I know for a fact, the Cats where well aware as my father in law was on the board.

I had mates that used to party with him and Buddy. It was the worst kept secret in town he was a fiend for the nose beers.

The Saints knew and Lethers pushed it through. Good guy for a night out, atrocious list management to let him anywhere near your club. Hence why Swans were desperate to get off him.

Interestingly he doesn't drink anymore and admits he is an addict. Would have been nice to come to that realisation when you were not taking a retirement package from the Saints.
Ryder was massive & unfortunately got injured in the closing minutes.
Hanners didn't get higher numbers, but pretty much every kick hit a target.
And bringing up his 'issues' now, is ordinary behaviour from you.

I thought it was just me. Even liking stuff is a headache.

Personally I'm hoping we don't trade Marshall. Unless we bring in another tall forward. I don't trust Hammer as a forward, Keeler still very raw. Matching up on Marshall and King could give teams nightmares.

Same. We learnt the hard way this year how important quality tall depth is. No King and Howard all year killed us.

More than happy with TDK! I think he has tremendous upside, and if we have read the tea leaves right with the sub rule and hopefully for our sake a change to the rruck rule, he could become the premier ruck in the competition - worth every $ of our unused salary cap from the last few years ;).

JSOS - I am not sold - injured, 28 this year - seeking a 4 year deal I think? I get he is a free agent, and we can acquire him as well as build via the draft. I am of the view Aleer is a better fit (if we are comparing the two) despite the draft capital that will be needed to acquire. 24 YO with 2-3 years under Boris and growing with the rest of the team is right in our sweet spot.

I have no doubt all of these players will make us better immediately, but is that what we are after? I want sustained success with generational players - think Brisbane of today. 7 finals campaigns straight and no signs of slowing down - the players we acquire need to fit that strategy.

The Brisbane of today are playing a different game to us. It's easy to not slow down when you can add Josh Dunkley, two Ashcroft brothers, Jaspa Fletcher, and another top 5 academy pick (Annable) to the best list in the comp.

Also Andrews, Coleman, Payne, Sam Marshall and Hipwood all drafted via the academy.

or we’ve been thinking about it wrong this whole time. Tony isn’t just one person, but something more, a cabal, a network… a feeling. Tell me honestly you haven’t felt tony inside of you these past few months. He’s been inside… all of us
