2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Imagine Chris Scott meeting Rowan at the end of this season. His team just made the grand final again, maybe won another premiership. They need a ruckman. He's telling Rowan "You'll be mostly in the forward line at St Kilda and only pinch hitting in the ruck. We actually need a senior ruckman. You fancy trying to reinvent yourself as a forward? Or how about you do whst you do best, nearer home, living the country life, no loss of salary or security"

What would you say?
"Hi Chris? Yeah mate it's Ross Lyon. Yeah, good mate, good, how are you? Great, good to hear. Listen, Ro Marshall tells me he's been chatting to you? Yeah, ruckmen hey, just speak a little slower, haha. Yeah listen mate, there's a courier on the way to your place, yeah right now, and he's got a copy of Ro's contract for you. Yeah, the one with a couple of years to run still. No, really, another two years. Yeah, anyway mate, when it gets there, you have a look over it, have a think about it and get back to me, okay? Cheers mate, look after yourself".......

I don’t get the narrative around Rowan not being informed of the clubs TDK pursuit.

Since when does list management report to players? How is it a story that Rowan wasn’t consulted about recruiting targets and plans on how they will play him next season. Most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Would be very hard for recruiting discretion if this is an expectation of the exisiting players

Cash him in and get what? Pick 18 that goes out to 20-something? He's a gun utility player and can cause major headaches for opposition defence, which we saw this year. We are also losing Heath so we won't have any backup. We are trying to get good, I'd rather take the punt on him being good for us and if he ends up in the VFL we are probably a top four side.

He’s a BOG average ruck who has never shown anything as a forward. If he was a gun utility player then we don’t go after TDK. His ruck work puts our mids on the back foot.
There’s a reason why Ross wanted TDK, because he doesn’t believe Marshall as our ruck leads us to finals success. Get rid of his salary while he’s still worth something.

I tend to agree. We do need another genuine forward ruck option though.

Could we see Dougal swung forward like his Port days given we are well stock in defence?

He has assets that can be used. He can dominate some facets of the game. He's not perfect absolutely but if we've paid his salary upfront as has been reported id rather see what he can do for us used differently.

Thanks for this reminder. Close to the best quote of all time:

“So can you believe how much I am in heaven? I am like getting the feeling of cumming in the gym; I'm getting the feeling of cumming at home; I'm getting the feeling of cumming backstage; when I pump up, when I pose out in front of 5000 people I get the same feeling, so I am cumming day and night. It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven.”

I wonder if they ran Blake Acres past Ro? Membrey? Tom Campbell? Ben Long?

Let the cobblers cobble.

We need solid back up for our enormous investment in TDK and flexibility for Kings return.

RoMa is SC friendly to retain.

We need geelong to decline rapidly, not improve whilst we ascend.

In my opinion (unfortunately it may not be the clubs).. it’s Geelong’s next three firsts (3xP20s) or Holmes or NO DEAL. 2x pick 20-25s is not enough.

They should be prioritizing Curnow who actually wants to leave a sinking ship.

I don’t want to sound too harsh but he obviously can’t take a hint either, ever since he became our number 1 ruck we’ve constantly been looking for another number 1 ruck. If it hasn’t sunk in by now it probably never will.

I’m also sure Ro isn’t daft enough to think we were recruiting TDK for anything other than the ruck position.

Just a story which all the facebook nuffies get around.

Oh also

Callum Wilkie will be the St Kilda captain in 2026

Lock it in - according to a player

Im confused by this. We have done no such thing until we started looking at TDK. The only other rucks we brought in was Paddy Ryder specifically to play the forward/ruck role alongside him and Campbell/Hayes/Boyd to provide injury relief. Heath and Dodoson were both young recruits with years of development ahead of them.

Thats 7 years without searching for another no.1 ruck.

I’d trade Ro. He’s worth nothing to us as a forward. Keeler will be a better option in the front half next year. If he’s of value to the cats, and they want to pay the price then they can have him.

We’re not likely going to contend for a premiership next year and with Ro gone, Dodson gets more exposure -be that AFL or VFL - and will accelerate his development for when we are ready to contend (2027 onwards IMO).

Don’t completely disagree but what if TDK does a hammy and misses 4 weeks?

Or even worse does a knee?
