2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

You know you can both want to remain where you are and have your head turned because of money.

I understand its what we have had to do, but our clubs contract dealings have created the Wilkie situation. If Wilkie didnt feel under valued as a result of what others are getting offerred, he wouldnt look at other offers.

Surely no one can blame Wilkie for having the carrot dangled in front of him, loyalty only takes you so far when you are 29yo and know you mighten have that many years left. At the very least he is justified in asking for a top up from our club to go somewhere near what the Dogs have offered, if the club stiff arms him then I wouldnt blame him requesting a trade.

At this stage neither Wilkie or Marshall have publicly requested a trade, so they are being respectful of the club. Its very different to the Merrett situation, he blew everything up like a petulant child and then did a back flip and stated he would have no problems going back the Hanger. He did the same last year and got a pay rise, he thinks he is bigger than the club.

The club have shown they are prepared to be go outside the norm to attract players, they now need to show that they are prepared to do the same to keep our better players eg Nasiah.

100%. If someone offered to increase my salary by 60% for doing the same job I'd be mad not to consider it. Especially if others at my current workplace were being paid more than me but I was one of the best at the job.

He can blame that on his own manager for negotiating his current deal

Back in the late 90s I went to worked in Germany and stayed with some Orange people. The guys I were staying with had driven a Citroen 2CV to an ashram in India. I hadn't even realised that it was possible at that point. Incredible photos.
I did overland on Top Deck from London to Katmandu in 1986. Old London double decker fitted out to bunk sleep upstairs. 10 weeks. Can't do it nowadays.
Longest I have been away from Australia since is a month in Britain and Ireland in 2018.
I get homesick for family. Shit my grand kids have been in QLD for a week and I miss them.
We are fortunate enough to have the means to go on comfort holidays overseas but only for 3 or so weeks. I do the occasional solo to Asia as my wife is over Asia. Off to Sulawasi some tome next year. Have to pick the countries in Asia so I don't look like a sad old sex tourist.

Leave Sunshine Coast, drive around Australia, to end up in Darwin. Put car in a shipping container and send it to Dili, Timor Leste. Drive around country and cross to West Timor (Indonesia). Then ferries to Flores, Sumbuwa, Lombok, Bali, Java and Borneo. Drive to Malaysia and Brunei, and back to Kuching Malaysia. Ship to Port Klang Malaysia (mainland). Then Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Georgia, Armenia and now in Turkey. Lots of twists and turns with border closures, disputes etc, but that is what we ended up doing. Tell your wife she is on the right track and it will be something you will always treasure that you have done. In three weeks we have been gone for 2 years. The plan is it will take us another 4-5 years to finish. So lots of other routes, adventures ahead.
This genuinely sounds like something from a movie. Living my dream. Congrats mate

If you think the media speculation regarding Wilkie and Marshall at the moment is evidence of mismanagement by the club, then if they stay post trade period you have to admit there was no mismanagement.
SOS needs to be sacked

Not sure I want a bloke who doesn’t want to be there as captain
I think both can co-exist. I’ve got a job interview at a different school on Friday. Slightly more money, different role. But if I remain where I am, and have been for 12 years, I’m fully committed to leading and doing my best there as well.

Although I’d hope Wilks was happy with his 750k, I’m not begrudging him for answering the phone, especially with the pay rise that’s involved.

I’d imagine, especially pre-social media days. Lots of players, including captains, took phone calls, nearly ended up here for there and it didn’t eventuate, and they maybe ended up captains/one club player etc.

I took this photo last night. For anyone who is worried SOS is doing this all alone, and trying to ruin Carlton in the process. There’s 6 people involved in all of this, plus a very serious board room, led by Bassat… and all the heavy hitters with the $$$ that I’m sure have a small amount of input into the board as well. If Lyon has to meet with the board each month, I’m guessing the list management crew have the same accountability too. IMG_0232.jpeg

Thought about Wood first.
But he had a quite a drop off this year, I think.
wonder if his best 22 spot is guaranteed for the next 2 years.
Not sure I want to possibly ruin Windy’s trajectory with the responsibilities at such a young age. Let him at least vice captain to Sincs or Wood.

To be fair to Wood he had a limited preseason after injuring his quad and played more as a forward target which is his less dominant role. He struggled to be consistent at North playing as a lead up tall forward. His stats were still really respectable.

It will be interesting to see if he gets that wing spot back.

Some heavy hitters. Michael Jordan for the players with a basketball connection and Peta Allen for the the Irish (and Fijian) players who Still (want) to call Australia home 😎

Why would you need to get wood to captain? Seems like a strange prerequisite

I'd put Windhager straight in but Diehard suggested he's not ready so would need to bridge. Wood seems more leadership material than Sincs if that was your intention.

I get what Kane’s saying but this is a business - when you’ve got leverage you’ve got leverage, and Wilkie has a golden opportunity for a pay bump and contract extension that sees out his career. His manager knows it, the saints know it, he’d actually be dumb not to take advantage.

As far as the holdup, it makes sense to wait and see how much is left over in the warchest after all the other trades are done. Bonus points for bread crumbing the bulldogs

My 2 cents.

Rowan (confirmed) and Wilkie (guessing) tell the club they want moves. Ross tells them that unless it ends up with us getting X or Y. No deal and see you in November for pre season.

Thats effectively what happened with Ro a few weeks back.

Neither player will publicly request a trade unless their agents are 100000% certain that a club will give us what we want as they are contracted. This is more important for Wilkie than Rowan as wilks is the unanimous next captain.

For most supporters, it will just be noise and never thought of again if Wilkie is named captain.

If my captain had been about to leave but couldn't get a deal done I'd not respect him even slightly. The fans make no difference. Your teammates aren't going to respect you if you aren't even fully committed to staying.

I'd strip his position as VC if he's been looking around even. Players can't have it all their own way.

I am fully on-board the cutthroat mentality that we are taking as a club. We are leaving no stone left unturned and are seemingly going away from the "protect and honour our darlings" that we have had for most out history.

Like most of us, I absolutely love the output and impact from Cal since coming to the club as a mature-aged recruit, but this past month has soured his image slightly. If the Dogs rumour lingers, it will reflect poorly on him considering we gave him a shot at the level when no one else would.

While I don't think he will leave, I would be making Cal state his intentions to the club. If he doesn't want to be at the club and wants to chase better coin, then good luck to him. But he better realise the move can't happen unless we come out of the deal as overwhelming winners at the trade table.

I support the club and players that pull on the jumper wholeheartedly. However, if you don't want to commit to club, then good luck to you. I don't care if you are the best player at the club. The club will outlast any selfish individual.

I can sleep better now knowing we have Michael Jordan working in list management.

From the Dogs board:

WB:
Out: Pick 10, Pick 28, JUH
In: Wilkie, Budarek

St Kilda:
In: Pick 7, Flanders
Out: Wilkie, F2, F3

GC:
In: Pick 10, Pick 28, JUH, F2, F3
Out: Pick 7, Flanders, Budarek

Someone should probably tell this clown we already have Pick 7 😂
🤮

Imagine anyone thinking Juh had any positive currency
