2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Exactly. We are all hairy chested about our contracted players, but cry when we give, in my view, a fair price for a young contracted midfield that Gubby just said they consider elite.
It is really the same from every supporter group every year. Every trade has to ream the opposition and we only need to trade shit for contracted players.

We might consider him elite, but do Gold Coast? Feels like we haven't even bothered trying to negotiate. If we got something like pick 35 back I'd be happy with it, something to unlock all the other trades.

Pick 7 = complete unknown, 18yo in a weak draft
Flanders: Known quantity, 24yo, proven at the elite level

It is a no brainer. Bird in the hand >>>> 7 in the bush

2015-2022 drafts (too early for last 2)

Pick 7
Hopper
Scrimshaw
Clark
B Smith
Young

E Hollands
Ward
Mackenzie (Cmac)

Pick 8
Ah Chee
Logue
Coff
Thomas
Serong
Cox
Amiss
J Clark

Pick 9
Weidemann
Brodie
Naughton
Jones
Henry (Academy)
Perkins
Gibcus
Ginbey

Pick 10
H McKay
Bowes
O'Brien
Blakey F/S
Green (Academy)
Reid
Erasmus (pick before Nas lol)
Pou

I'd probably only take the bolded ahead of Flanders. McKay and Naughton are up and down. Green and Blakey not even avilable to us. Smith a head case.

Serong and Young probably the pick of the crop.

A lot of B graders. Not too many complete misses though.

Hollands and Thomas busts cos they're dickheads. Coff an injury bust. Weidemann a bust I think?

Love the pile on for having an opinion

My view is that this draft is not as bad as people think - that's the difference between my opinion and yours

List managers have been telling journos that the draft is crap - I agree to an extent but I believe they are exaggerating it for the sake of getting better deals at the trade table

If you don't believe me, then believe Riley Beveridge who was on air last week saying the draft is not as bad as people are saying

I think pick 7 is definitely not as valuable as in the past, but I do think we can get more in return for Flanders. I am the type of person who likes to bargain for as much value as possible

Keep in mind that pick 7 will end up as 11 or 12 on draft night.

Yeah a pile on when you are melting over one trade on day one that hasn't even happened as yet.

I agree, if we get Flander is the worst most compromised draft in a decade, for pick 7 that will eventually be about 10 or 11, SOS should be sacked.

Oh by the way anyone can have an opinion, just as other think that opinion is rubbish. Its called a football forum, all it comprises of is opinion.

You don’t think we are bargaining lol? What if Gold Coast say nah pick 7 is what it’ll take, nothing else….

You're a great storyteller mate, can't wait for the climax

Win a final or two all together or in 2026?

Without any of our trades, id be disappointed if our current group.of youngsters only won a final or two.
At this stage together.
To me, king, Phillipou and tauru are way more talented than any of the ones we will bring in. If we are to build something sustainable, it will be based on those guys and others like Wilson becoming consistent high level and top 50 in the game type performers, rather than off the back of the ones to be traded in, who all have strengths but also limitations that mean they’ll never be in that top echelon.

Please Sainters stick to your guns re Marshall. Don't be yet another club to get fleeced by Geelong in a trade period. Still annoys me how cheaply they got Bailey Smith. They will be trying everything to rip us off too (ik Ro is contracted - so different case)

Flanders for 7 is fine as long as we bargain hard with Geelong over Marshall
This, to me is the proper way to look at it.

Look at the trading in its entirety when a trade is not exactly as you required. Pick 7 for Flanders? We haven't seen the full trade, still might be something coming back or as projecttv mentioned a token pick for Ainsworth.

Will anyone complain if we end up with
TDK - no draft capital
JSOS - no draft capital
Flanders - pick 7, overs maybe
Aleer - pick swaps
Ryan - pick swaps
Ainsworth - token pick

Roh - overs because contracted
Steele - fair as we told him to look around

Would people melt? Really we have limited draft capital and have up to four players to trade for.

As long as we have the capital to get Fincher and we keep F1, who cares?

Four clubs wanted Flanders and people are quibbling over some second rounder - lol

Thought he spoke really well. No bull dust, straight to the point!

Interesting comment on Jack Steele, clearly all coming from Ross.
I thought he spoke like he was still coming to following a lobotomy.

Guy seemed like he was either a total idiot or being forced to speak to Twomey at gun point.

I don't know much about Gubby, I believe he's pretty highly rated, so I'm hoping he just phoned that in as it is nothing but a bothersome distraction during his busiest time of the year.

But yeah, he didn't come out of that little chat looking like someone who you'd want making any big decisions for you.

'some second rounder' landed us Hugh Boxshall last year

I think pick 7 is slightly overs (I think we should get a 3rd round pick back) however I think there's stuff we don't know about which may compromise this trade from occurring if we don't get it done early with a straight swap. I would (as a layman) think we could get more out of a 3 way swap between us, Melb, GC involving Petracca but there's a reason for the straight swap which we will probably find out in due course.

My gut remains that Marshall stays. I can't see Geelong getting it done unless they pull out of Curnow.
They wont get Curnow done, they haven't the capital. Marshall will be the only one they concentrate on.

I really hope we just accept their first as a straight swap for the melts.

Yeah I feel if Geelong drop the Curnow chase they'll meet us closer to what we want for Marshall (would be a fail for the Cats to not close either of these deals)
