2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Feels like the perfect Fantasia replacement for the Bloos.

This is a decent call tbh. I actually feel a bit bad for him because he clearly wanted to be a mid/fwd (more mid) with the prestige and higher salary that brings, but he does not have the pace, agility or kick for it anymore.

He could actually go well if he plays almost the exact same role Snags does for us right now.

MARSHALL TALKS CONTINUE

GEELONG and St Kilda have kicked off talks about a trade for Rowan Marshall, with the Saints expected to target a future pick as part of a deal.

The clubs spoke on Saturday and again on Monday around a potential deal sending Marshall to the Cats after his trade request became official last Friday.

The Cats hold picks No.18, 39, 59 and 77 in this year's pool and are remaining hopeful they can entice Charlie Curnow to the club, with their later draft hand meaning the Saints would be likely to focus on a future pick as part of trade talks.

"I had a chat to 'SOS' (Saints list manager Stephen Silvagni) on Saturday just to get something going a bit, but we'll follow up from that today and get a read on the situation," Cats head of football Andrew Mackie told Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio on Monday.

"He's got two years to go so they're never easy to do, they're a bit complex, but our intention is to try and bring Rowan in and we'll see how we go with that." – Callum Twomey

I love the fact the Saints are shitting those three dog turds on the late trade. Everything is negative
  • the wrong players
  • they wont move the needle
  • they have overpaid
  • Lyon runs everything
  • all their young players will leave
  • overpaid for Flanders
  • should take unders for Marshall
Then they got the coach of Balwyn some failed AFL coach to tut out and say this will never be a top four team, and they all went yes yes, true blah blah blah.

They are rattled and it shows.

Sounds like that call with SOS wasn't too easy.

St Kilda has “plenty of money to splash” and hasn’t finished “fishing” following an extraordinary cash splurge of more than $4.5m spent on five players so far this off-season.

But Saints head of talent and acquisition Graeme Allan said the club was still in the market for players this trade period,

And he warned rival clubs that St Kilda would “go hunting again” next year.

St Kilda has already locked away free agents Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni and will bring in three more players Sam Flanders, Liam Ryan and Leek Aleer during this trade period following one of the most aggressive players acquisition hauls in modern football.

Asked if the club could retain its homegrown talent in the coming years, given the spend on bringing players in, Allan said: “It won’t be a problem … we’ll go hunting again next year.”

“We are still going (this trade period). We have got plenty of money to splash.”

In an intriguing press conference before the trade period officially got underway, Allan also

● Expressed surprise that Flanders chose Moorabbin as his preferred destination, but believed the club’s pick seven would get a trade done.

● Maintained he had kept the club’s interest in Silvagni a secret from his father Stephen, who is the Saints’ list manager

● Said the club would speak to Geelong about Rowan Marshall’s request for a trade to the Cats, but wouldn’t be giving him away without the appropriate compensation.

● Believed superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s decision to sign a two-year $2m contract to remain at the Saints had been a game-changer in the club’s ability to land key targets.

“I think with Nas signing really was important for us, without Nas signing, I am not sure if we would be here talking to you guys because we mightn’t have anything on the table,” he said.

Allan dismissed suggestions that the club would struggle to keep talent in the future, given its outlay on the new acquisitions.

“Not all of them (the new players) are on big money,” he said.

“Ross (Lyon) was playing under restrictions, he was coaching under restrictions this year.

“We battled to get to 95% (of the salary cap spend) right at the end, which we have to under league rules, so there was a lot of front-ending (with the new players’ contracts).”

He said of Silvagni choosing the Saints: “I didn’t tell his dad. We are great mates … he (Stephen) was shocked. Then it was Ross (Lyon) who came over the top and (when) Ross comes over the top, (you) get out of the way.”

Allan will speak with Geelong about Marshall in the coming days, but he said he would drive a tough bargain and “do what is best for the St Kilda Football Club.”

“We will talk to the Cats and see what they have to say.”

Allan said of Flanders: “We thought he might have gone to another club … we were really happy Sam picked us … he had some good offers.”

“I think it will be a straight swap (pick seven for Flanders).”

He said likely new captain Callum Wilkie hadn’t been promised the role as part of his decision to turn his back on an offer from Western Bulldogs.

“We have given no promises … I am not going to talk about extensions or contracts,” he said when asked about Wilkie, who met recently with the Dogs before deciding to remain a Saint.

“That’s out of my pay packet,” he added when asked if Wilkie would be the next skipper with Jack Steele told to explore his options, even though the current captain wants to stay.

“Jack is a great fellow, I have known Jack since he was 18 at the Giants,” he said.

“We will see what happens in the next few weeks. (I) haven’t spoken to any (clubs) yet (about Steele).”
Definitely talking about essendons desperate offers to Flanders there lol

This is significantly pleasing

I swear Damo is just fishing for bites

A late 20' pick for Flanders 😂

7 definitely overs in any other draft. In a shit draft where the pick will likely end up near the teens, it's a fair trade.
I don’t think damo has ever watched him play, I went to a fair few suns games the past 2 years and watched him pretty closely from mid year he’s quick very clean good decision maker and he’s a tough little campaigner, I think he’ll be the best pick up we’ve had since Steele

I think armoooo has a voice and certainly doesn’t need any help from you.

Frankly I don’t rate the nonsense you post, I can’t work out if you’re 15 or just some sad git. You’ve stalked me on here leaving thumbs down on post after post. Did one of my posts hurt you’re feeling, question your knowledge, prick your pride, I don’t care put me on ignore.

It’s a football forum, poster’s have different opinions, suck it up
I like your opinions.

They are mostly comedy with an occasional bit of sense.

Play on old fella 😊

so we have
Bombers trading junk for Fiorini to preserve Draper compo
Melb trading junk for Mihocek to preserve Spargo compo
West Coast trading a decent pick (why???) for Starcevich to preserve Allen compo

and every other club penalised by having their picks pushed back by these protected compo picks

it needs to stop

BUILD THE MAN A STATUE
This JUH to GCS confirmation is good news.

Either he does well and displaces one of the Suns' other key forwards (eg a guy with links to the club that becomes a free agent next year)

Or he carries on his current trajectory and torpedoes one of the strongest lists in the AFL

It's legal rorting of the free agency rules - certainly not how it was intended.

Not much that can be done until the loophole is closed.

Never ever trade away a future first.
Yep.
Case in point Port, Dees and Blues with no pick 1 this year.
Yes, I know it’s not a great draft this year, but still handy to use in trades, like we are with Ned.

Welll according to Caro, we were paying 83% of the cap this year, which I assume means that was the value of all our player contracts for 2025. And that included Billings and Crouch money, which maybe pushes the value of our 2025 contracts to - say - 80-82%? Then if we've frontloaded those contracts to hit 95% this year, maybe the value of those contracts for 2026 and 2027 is - like - 70?! And we can spend 105%, so we're possibly walking around with 35% of the salary cap in our pocket!!! (of course, the danger is that a player like Marshall takes all that upfront money and then goes and gets a second lick at another club, but on balance it's worth it).

He never had a big kick and his agility didn't seem to stop him getting career best numbers in 2022 having one of his best results in the b&f.

Guess I'd overlooked the fact that achilles ruptures have a 12 month delay until the long term effects become apparent.

Its a good thing we have bigfootys most super serial poster to set the rest of us simpletons straight.
He was nether a big kick but he lost a lot of distance following a bad run with injuries.

It wasn’t just the Achille’s injury, he’d had stress fractures in his back, a meniscus and a pcl reconstruction. I don’t think he’s ever returned to the player he was before that run and he’s been useful for Essendon, 41 games over two years.

I don’t know if he’d have fared any better if he’d stayed with us but taking the dollars when the fan base has no built up goodwill puts a target on your back.

He was a favourite on hear for years, I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest. Did he have a brother on someone’s academy list ?, who knows someone might offer him a lifeline but at 28 maybe that’s it for him.

Kudos on the admission, first step is acknowledgement and acceptance.

He contracted for 2026 with an additional year in 2027 he can trigger as an option.

Regarding our plans. I think after all the work the club has done, to not have a real secondary kpf option that isn’t max king is pure arrogance. Im
Not talking about Hamner. I mean a genuine option.

Between he or Tauru one has to be developed properly.
