I was not a fan of Lyon being reappointed as coach - it felt like a back to the future moment to me. I did think that maybe the one big advantage would be he would help attraction and retention of talent.

It hasn't panned out that way. Battle leaving, multiple big offers rejected. If NAS goes, to me the question becomes what has Lyon gained us? Certainly not meaningful onfield improvement. Not attraction, not retention, not a modern brand of football.

It almost feels existential.
Pointless and unprofessional exercise extending Ratten's contract and then not honoring it. Lyon got us into an elimination final as did Ratten, but otherwise has achieved nothing of note in three seasons except a downward spiral. Back to the future is right.

If they don’t want to leave their home state, they shouldn’t enter the National Draft. It’s as simple as that
*Or move to Qld/NSW so that's your home state because the academies mean you never have to leave with none of the backlash other draftees get for wanting the same thing.

Rooey said that Hodgey just went in to defend his mate.

That’s all this is about. Obviously Ratten is still offended for his mates to feel like they need to say something still
I might get silenced yet again for this (actually that was George so maybe not), but Ratten is the biggest sook going around. He still has not thanked any StKilda supporters for sticking up for him, not said any of us are a great bunch, or whatever standard crap comes out of mouths of people in that situation. Nothing. Treats us all with contempt.

I’m glad the spud is gone. Defeatist attitude based on hope and positive thoughts of “why not us?”. Because you didn’t drive standards you numpty!

It’s not a downward spiral, it’s a full rebuild of what was a terrible list.

You’re right, it was extremely unprofessional to sack Ratten just weeks after extending his contract. The board should have been forced out with him.

That was inexcusable, to offer him an extension.
I have zero issues with them sacking him, however.

If Ratten and his mates want to be pissed at anyone, be pissed at Carlton.

But seriously, grow up and move on, if he was up to the caper he’d be getting head hunted for roles as we speak. Reality is, that he’s not.
He had players showing up unfit. That is unacceptable, regardless of any of his other deficiencies

When you think about it, it's so crazy that to be an AFL player, you have to play for the first two years at whatever club selects you, you have no say in it at all, even if you are an 18 y.o. kid who's never left home before and a club on the other side of the continent drafts you.

Meh, these days people see 18 year olds as "still kids". In the old days you'd have a couple of kids of your own by then and have already spent a couple of years overseas fighting a brutal war. 18 year olds can be mature if they're treated as mature.

The history of the club since our first and last premiership back in the dark old days where decimal currency had just come in, has been supposed rebuild, after rebuild, after rebuild over and over..it's a bullsh*t excuse for failure from the top to bottom.

For all that money we’re going to pay Nas we are currently not winning games so the rest of the team better get better.
TDK, Aleer + early pick.
Full season of King and Pou.
There's no reason why we can't bounce next year

The contract was honoured to the letter. The termination clause said six month termination period; that's what Ratts got. Contracts are terminated all the time by either side, as long as people obey what's written down then it's fine.

Yeah - contracts matter - unless of course you are a semi professional AFL footballer who thinks they should be able to pick and choose which part of their contract with the AFL they decide to honour.

(See Harley Reid - assuming the "rumours" being spread about him not wanting to go to lower clubs are true)

It sure is, but I feel like we’re finally doing a real rebuild for the first time in 20 years

I'm the different side of the coin. We would have kept flogging the old players with Ratten with the same FIXture so continued to ceiling out at 8th.

We sack Ratten and we appoint a new coach. Let's not forget Macrae got a Collingwood list that had come off a shocking year with injury. Do we end up with Justin Leppitsch with a broken Brisbane list?

Would any coach have attracted a "big fish". Certainly hasn't helped a 4 time premiership coach at their club.

You don't like Ross. I get it. I hate the way we play too but from watching us and Brisbane I don't think the game plan is too dissimilar. We just struggle to execute it for 4 quarter. We miss targets. We get caught out ball watching. We get too many sucked into the contest. We have too many go up defending rather than one staying down.

Each week I see us doing a bit better for longer. Not long enough but hoping that it will come on more quickly next year. As I said I'm just the other side of the coin to you.

Has it really though?

Didn't Mark Williams apply for the coaching role but didn't get it as he was honest and said our list was no good, or was that just a rumour?

Since Ross left, it doesn't seem like we've really bitten the bullet until now.

TDK is signing for 5+ years.

This nas kerfuffle is over 2 years.

His agent has told him to trust him and nas is. It’s not the player pushing for more money. It’s Williams saying he will get him more just watch.
If that is the strategy, we are being too smart by half.
Have we learned nothing from the Battle scenario? FAFO big time.
So we keep playing handball and say want more sign on for longer. He can look at Port and think, similar money AT HOME over the same years.
We are forcing his hand and it may be to go home. If its not about money as you keep saying why would he be forced to stay?
