Anyone in here have any intel on if we finish with 4 wins our chance of a priority pick? Not sure it'd even help, but...
Nah mate gotta get through all the ‘non-afl’ states academy selections first..

The priority pick would start at pick 44..

Nah we don't need anymore of those. It's on the coaches and playing group to deliver better performances.
There's enough to come into the side potentially when all are fit and available.
We'll still likely be a bottom six team by the looks of the ladder. And there's ways to get more picks with player trades and/or trading our two R2's and/or F1 anyway if we want to generate more picks in this draft.
But I think we'll mostly be trying to trade for players and I doubt we'll be drafting more than 2-3 young kids, if anything, based on the post draft comments from Brady and Thursfield last year that we've got enough kids.
I'm hoping we balance 2-3 kids at the draft and mid 20's players via draft/trade that add to our best 22.
But I guess we'll see what players come in and go out, and what picks we have left after trade week.

Lochy Dovaston quickly becoming one of my favourites in this years draft class. Kicked 3.2 on the weekend and also had 5 tackles. Kicking and decision making along with his class in front of goals is a real stand out. I think he is going to rocket up draft boards especially if he is giving a crack for the rep sides.

Archie Ludowyke reminded everyone of his talent too, kicked 5.1 from 6 marks.

A FIRST-ROUND RECORD?

THE NUMBER of first-round draft picks this year could surpass 30 for the first time ever as more and more talented players with Academy, Next Generation Academy and father-son ties emerge in the pool.

There were 30 first-round selections in the 2011 draft, when Greater Western Sydney had its concessions, and 27 in 2010 when Gold Coast had its suite of draft picks. The 2023 draft also had 29 picks as the first full-blown Suns Academy haul came through.

This year could set a new record, with up to 15 players looming as possible first-round selections with ties to clubs.

From the northern Academies, Zeke Uwland, Beau Addinsall, Dylan Patterson and Koby Coulson (Gold Coast) have all impressed, while Dan Annable is a lock as an early pick and Isaac Waller has shown his potential as well from Brisbane's Academy.

Sydney could also have three prospects in that group with Max King, Lachie Carmichael and Noah Chamberlain.

From an NGA perspective, the form of Calder Cannons pair Hussein El Achkar and Adam Sweid to start the season has put the exciting duo in that frame as Essendon-tied Academy players, while Oakleigh Chargers tall forward Zac McCarthy (Collingwood NGA) has also emerged as a top-30 prospect with a promising start to his campaign.

Father-sons Harry Dean (son of Carlton's Peter) and Louis Kellaway (son of Richmond's Duncan) have also had strong starts to their draft campaigns to put them into first-round contention, with Tom McGuane (Collingwood) another who could be around the top 20.

Throw in the possibility of first-round or end-of-first-round free agency compensation picks for players leaving clubs and a new benchmark could be set for the amount of picks on night one of the draft.

The bidding system has been redesigned this year to make it harder for clubs to match multiple early bids on players but for the Gold Coast, who already have three first-round picks, they will be able to secure an Academy windfall. – Callum Twomey

Imagine if NGA and FS or Academies could only have one pick per team per round and had to pay the price with a pick from that round.

Then round one of the draft would only have 18 spots instead of 135 picks at 5 minutes a pop and take half the time left til Christmas to complete.

Yes it would and not taking up more media space over that period would be a huge problem for the AFL.

So the pick we got from Richmond will be in the 30+ range ?

Most likely. At minimum late twenties. with our natural 2nd rounder pushing into the 30's as well.

Going to be an absolute joke that two of the best teams this year, GC and Brisbane are going to potentially get multiple bites at the cherry before the clubs that actually need it (bottom 5 sides).

I have the feeling Ludowyke won’t be a number 1 tall and as such will drift a bit despite output - similar to Matty Jefferson a few years back.

Yep. I'm keen to see how they pay for all their players if they've got multiple players in the top 25.
Not sure they'll be able to stockpile F1's like previously and have enough points this year.
GC might have the most flexibility with 3,900 points already and 7, 13 and 16 that could be shuffled.
Lions with pick 17, Swans pick 10, WCE 18, 19 and GWS pick 15 might be options.
NM, GWS, *, Blues have two 2nd rounders to move up the order, but GWS might have academy kids so need the points.
Blues might be willing to give up their F1 and those two R2's to get something earlier.
It will be very interesting to see what happens.

Agree. He is my biggest “wait and see” when it comes to the top 10.

Could easily see the more aggressive Curtin or Schubert fly past him.

Excellent list RF08!! ..now amend it and show the public who are tied either academy, FS or NGA..then we'll see how tainted this draft is this year!!

Where would Hunter Holmes sit in the order? Might be worth us considering, we need transition running.
