It would be hilarious if another AFL club pounced on McAndrew before the Friday deadline.

Bulldogs look like taking Southport ruck Brayden Crossley before the deadline closes but you'd think they'd also be doing their due diligence on McAndrew to not have already signed Crossley as their back up ruck with only 2nd year ruck Lachlan Smith on their list. Tim English has an abdominal injury and not expected to be available round 1.

At least they have a 19 year old Smith developing on their list unlike the Crows.

Is it possible to make a ruthless call and cut and pay out a contracted player (Strachan) to free up a list spot for someone else (McAndrew)
That depends on what you mean... If you're talking about just delisting a player, then no, that's not possible - the player would still remain on our list until Oct 31st anyway. If you're talking about encouraging a player to retire voluntarily, then yes, that might be feasible.

The only way to bring a player onto our list now is via the PSSP (or the MSD later in the year). Given that our lists are currently full, the only way this can happen is if we put a player on the Inactive List. The only way we can do that is if a player retires or suffers a season-ending injury.

The club could encourage Smith or Strachan to retire, but neither shows any inclination to do so at this point in time.

I'm not 100% certain on when the PSSP window closes - it's either today or Friday. After that, the only option is the MSD.
Ill Be Back Jim Carrey GIF

He is injured...
The rules for the Inactive List state that the injury needs to be season-ending, and they need to have medical evidence to support this claim.

Given that the club's media releases indicate they're still hoping Strachan will be available for (SANFL) R1, his medical diagnosis obviously isn't season-ending.

Mark Bickley summed it up well either today or yesterday, its a shame we havent played this better and given ourselves more options.
Strachan's 6th year on list for 6 games, 29 years old, clearly not the future, no pre season at all. He shouldnt be getting anywhere near our side.

We should have pulled the band aid off at the end of the year. Club has had a good off season but the triggered contract extension for Smith and not being more ruthless on this front to give us more options has been disappointing and could impact us for a while.

I've got no argument with that - but that's all history, and can no longer be changed. I'm just presenting what our options are at present.

I would note though that Strachan's role was never "the future", it was always a SANFL-based ready-to-go backup for ROB. He was never intended to be either a competitor for ROB's position or a long-term replacement for ROB. His list position should be judged on that basis, not on the basis that he fails to fill a role which has never been his in the first place.

Delisting and re-rookieing has become quite popular. We should take it to the next level

The "retire then re-draft" move.

We retire Strachan then tell him we'll re-draft him in the mid-season draft (on a six month contract) if we have room.
How does that work, given that he'd still be on our list anyway?

Even if a player retires, they still remain on the list until the contract expires on 31st October (the day when all AFL contracts expire).

Retire is just the polite way of putting it. The reality is we immediately terminate his contract

Even if we did that, which would be illegal anyway, he'd still be on our list until 31st October.

Delisting a player after the draft period does not immediately remove them from the club's playing list. They remain on the list until 31st October.

I wasn't debating whether you can talk a player into retiring. Obviously that's possible. It's your suggestion that we promise to re-draft a player who is still on the list which I was querying.

They don't have a backup ruck at all though?

It's nice to have a kid on the list, but if they can't play for you, then they're just taking space til they can.

And in the meantime, they need to go find somebody because English is injured and they have no one who can play on their list.

Actually - scrap that.

The Bulldogs decided to not sign Crossley and seem to be going into the season without a backup ruck?

Am I missing something?

Well 207cm Rory Lobb has done a shitload more AFL ruck than Strachan, Turray, Thilly and McAndrew all put together but obviously they want him in defence by preference.

And unlike Thilthorpe and Turray who were drafted/recruited as Forwards.... Lachlan Smith was drafted as a ruckman.

When will you admit this has been a failure by Adelaide list management, almost everyone can see that but not you.

As of Friday we are stuck with what we have which is no serious back up if ROB goes down before the season start or early on on the season....and Strachan who has struggled with his endurance with virtually no preseason, yeah everything is great.

The bulldogs passed on both their list spots.

So, the Bulldogs passed on Crossley. And any other ruck.

Smith isn't any more an AFL ruck yet than I am.

So - they're going in with an injured English and no one else?

What are they planning?
