For the what to lose, time. Any time spent trialling a player you don't particularly care for (but went undrafted) is time away from a prospect you are genuinely curious on.

I would be very surprised if we went for anyone in this draft class with a SPP pick this year. I'm going to hazard a guess that most of these guys will be looked at in 2026 with a "wait and see" campaign in the twos in the meantime by clubs.

My guess is someone (probably another tall) that got overlooked in the 2023-2024 drafts, seeing as you said, we made a big deal about wanting that slot open.
Depends if you could draft them on a 1 year deal. Then its low risk if you don't see the traits you were after in that player

If any one watches Taj Murray in the Allies game v SA, its a no brainer. Yes, will take time, but has genuine raw talent. AFL quality talent. Kicked 4 goals, great leap and athleticism, 201 cm, can take a grab. Kicked a cracking high skill tight snap in that match, genuine small forward type goal.

Bit quieter in the other matches for sure. Did anyone see him play at PAC this year?

Jett Dahlitz has an elite leg, Ive seen him play mid as a younger lad and dominate, could he play wing/high half back for us? Always been pegged in defence for Sturt, can he push further up the ground?

Are we looking at a ready made mature player instead?? I would have thought we have enough talent in the SANFL not getting a chance. Dowling, Edwards, Ryan etc.

That's no different to a rookie draft pick and we made it clear we wanted no part in that. Heck, we saw more value in retaining Schoenberg over having a list spot open for one.

McAndrew was a panic purchase.
Why do you say that?

Agree we should be managing our ruck stocks better, but he looked like a better option than Strachan.

Should have been given games this year imo, particularly when ROB was going through a quieter period.

Bigger issue going forward is ROB & the new ruck rules.

It will be interesting the type of players we invite.

Rucks, inside mids, kpd, speed...

A few I think have AFL attributes
Setterfield
Hollands
Hobbs
Stevens (did Geelong rab him again?)
Blight
H Jackson

But we may go for a local league option.

Hollands high end is worth the risk. Nothing to lose having a crack at him.

If not him who - must be someone that is able to play AFL in 2026 right?

I’m expecting something to come out before lists are finalised - unless someone can explain the value of the empty spot to me?

Maybe we see Thilthorpe as our future ruck now that we traded for a 197cm forward in Maley. Then recruited another 197cm 18 year old forward in Ludowyke. Then we still have McAndrew
We’ve gotta stop suggesting this as a possibility

We’re not converting a generational forward talent into a ruck

We’d already said no to him, hence him signing with Norwood. We only got interested when Strachan did his foot. We needed a back up tall body and he was the nearest and most AFL level trained. Our list was full, he was nowhere near our radar until emergency situation. It’s pretty obvious.

A 'little coincidental' that our last five players on the list, Cotton, Maley, Marsh, Ludowyke and Ah Chee, have all been forwards, and four of them talls? I'd hope for better list management than that.
I think Cotton and Marsh have a chance of not ending up as ‘talls’, at least in how they play

Ludo and Maley are two different types of tall forwards, too

No, we're not that stupid.

We may be looking at shifting Fogarty to a third tall though, but more likely we're just getting in who we deem as the good prospects and letting the best 22 sorts itself out later.

What quality of “midfield run” will be available for SSP spot? We won’t even play mids selected prior to pick 30 that are fit and in form. We prefer to keep running gassed or injured mids into the ground.

Tex is nearing the end, with 2026 surely his last season. Beyond him, Fog & Thilthorpe are our only proven forwards. Welsh looks unlikely to make it.

At this point, we need to find a Tex replacement - and we need to find them now. In reality, we've probably left the drafting of KPFs 2 years too late (we're already 3-4 years late with drafting ROB's replacement). At this point, the plan appears to be grab as many as possible and hope that (at least) one of them works out.

It's not dissimilar to the approach we adopted in 2003, when we drafted Watts, Krueger and Hudson, with only Hudson going on to have a successful AFL career.

Yeah fine, now tell me where we find this Unicorn midfielder with run that can also find the footy in the State Leagues currently?

I'm open to suggestions/names because none of the AFL midfielders delisted offer up that run. None of the leading midfield vote getters in the Magarey Medal, Liston Medal, Sandover Medal or Leitch Medal offer up this magical run. Tom Lewis NO, Charlie Constable NO, Jacob Dawson NO, Sam Siggins/Josh Green Hell NO.

Of course we could actually give our forgotten midfield draftee Charlie Edwards who has excellent speed and run or Billy Dowling who hasa really good tank a run. Harry Schoenberg offers more run as midfielder than most State League mids.

That's not panic though.

We had an injury to our backup ruckman, then went & found a replacement.

Thunderstruck What are we missing, how did this lad not get at least a rookie shot?

Speed, agility and laser kicking and clean hands, first take sure ball handling, deadly sidestep etc etc.

But if we get to trial them over preseason then draft them on a 1 year, its a different pathway that taking them in the rookie draft with no exposed form at the hosting club

Hopefully not, you can’t replace a 60+ goals per season.

An upgrade on ROB would be great but not at the expense of our best forward and most important structural piece.

The counter point is who is that unicorn midfielder in this draft? Noting this was a draft that came off as complete dog water with one of the lowest picks taken in the main draft and a 20 year old first rounder.

Considering I mentioned that my gut feel is it's someone from the 23/24 draft class (which follows how we have historically liked to use SPP/MSD picks), I clearly don't think its going to be a star reserves midfielder. I'm thinking someone like Kobe Ryan (but maybe more obscure) as our attempt at looking for a Newcombe clone, who's young and putting up big clearance/defensive numbers.

So you've heard how Kobe Ryan's season ending knee injury is going I take it?

I don't get it either, but then no other club drafted him. There must be some knock on him that's not obvious from how he plays
Only thing I can think of is durability, he does have a chequered injury history but when he's up and running he ticks most of the AFL attributes you look for. It's certainly not character.
