Begg's follow up work was very strong.

I think you're right on Steene and why the club would have given him 2 more years - might be the best available in terms of marking for prospective ruckmen. He screams tweener to me though. I think he'll be a good mark for a ruck- but not for a forward. And a good ruck for a forward, but not for a ruck. So not good at either of the positions he plays.

Smit's strength and aggression might give him a bit more of a chance of being good as a ruck.

I'd be adding a more mature currently better ruck.
It will probably come down to whether or not Cox gets another year. List spots might not allow us the luxury of getting a mature ruckman. I think we'll just go with what we have next year

His follow up work was good, but I never thought it outweighed what he gave up in the ruck or marking around the ground. I also thought it was odd we never switched his role so he get develop an aerial game given our rucks in the seniors were all strong in air.

A lot of premiership second ruckman are tweeners though so that’s doesn’t bother me too much with Steene. I’ll take a tweener that’s been moulded to fit our system if that what he becomes.

Agree on Smit, I just hope he can develop a semblance of an aerial game before he gets shifted back into the ruck and I’d also be adding another mature ruck to replace Cox.

Coxy probably was - who else?

I think it’s unlikely now with the suggested contract extensions for Steene and Smit and the potential addition of McCarthy. Could replace Cox with another ruck instead of a potential NGA/FS selection, but if we’re doing that why not just keep Cox.

Trent West, Nathan Vardy, Ivan Soldo, Mike Pyke, Leigh Brown and Brent Renouf
I think that's just a list of pretty ordinary rucks - and a KPP, Leigh Brown, who was a 150 game player before he began chopping out in the ruck.

What’s the difference between an ordinary ruck and tweener?

Either way all the players I listed weren’t good enough rucks or key forwards in their own right but managed a premiership medal by playing both roles.

The only thing Brent Renouf was a "tweener" of was being between being VFL level or delisted. 13 goals in his 68 career games. 8.5 disposals and 17.4 hit outs per game.

Pure dud, carried to a flag in 2008.
Shows the standard to make it as a premiership player in this role isn’t very high.

People dismiss young ruckman way too quickly sometimes. Hes a baby still. Gawn, Grundy, Xerri were in and out of the VFL for years as youngsters

I remember watching Gawn in his VFL days and thinking oh yeah, he seems fine. I didn't see anything remarkable about him but he turned out to be a brilliant footballer. This is the ruck way.

They do need more time and if you have one that has above average in mark8ng, then you have to hold them a bit longer

It's funny, Grundy came though the opposite way, as he was so physically developed from such a young age. I remember him going toe to toe with big Mummy that day and more than holding his own with him physically. And he was good around the ground for a ruck. But that marking ability was just never there was it.

Which is why, ultimately, a ruck like Cameron or Gawn who consistently takes strong contested marks has more value than a bloke that just can't.

As Simon Goodwin discovered!

No slight on big Brody, I was very fond of him. It's just a reality of footy.

They generally do, which is why poaching them is a legit tactic.

Grundy however was a bit of an exception. By age 20 he was in the AFL team for a good two thirds of the season, and never really looked back. Peaking in his mid-20s was a bit Nic Nait-like

I went down to Casey Fields to watch Grundy play in the VFL in his first year at the club. Went home a little under whelmed because he had lowered his colours slightly to his direct Casey opponent. Turns out that opponent was no mug. It was Max Gawn.

I’d be shocked if Cox received another year given his sharp decline in competitiveness at senior level this year. Not every player can get themselves back to their best in their 30’s like Sidey and Pendles. The majority either know they’re cooked or they get told by their club their services are no longer required. I think Cox will be given a “thanks for your services” handshake at the end of the year and we’ll look to recruit a mature back up ruck.

I think I have worked out why the Gettable boys have mentioned Darcy Cameron every week this year.

His manager is Colin Young. A strong leaker to Gettable over the years. And a manager who loves to move his players around. Eg Rory Lobb and Brad Hill

Apparently Leppa is playing hard ball and seeing no need to re negotiate- this could get ugly if we don’t come to the table. And Young will continue to leverage the media to put pressure on

Looked at young’s client list…. I’d say dc is more likely to leave Colin young than the pies.

It was pretty clear he’s had Ralph’s ear this week. How does it get ugly though? He’ll be at Collingwood in 2026 which provides ample time to sort through every option.

I suppose he could demand a trade Ala Noble and we have to decide whether we offload or keep

The tone of the conversation on Fox was very much along the lines of we’ll have 2026 to figure it all out. Also whilst managers have power like never before they haven’t yet reached a point where they can will players into switching clubs. I’ll be honest of all the current contracts up for debate it’s Mihocek that concerns me most. Clubs will come hard for him, he’s a FA and what we’ve apparently put forward so far is a long way off, IMO.

Difference being that Noble was a player who was surplus to our needs and a valuable piece in another trade deal.
Cameron is neither of those things, and quite the opposite of the first. It would take a hell of an offer to even get the club to the table at this point.

exactly right, any Collingwood supporter who panics is exactly what Cameron's manager wants Leppa and the club to do.
He is signed until the end of 2026.

Let's hope the club doesn't panic.

The only part that's actually ugly is Ralph's reporting.
