Interesting that journos seem to be pretty happy linking some very high profile free/pre-agents to clubs e.g.
  • Zac Butters to Bulldogs or Hawthorn (Kornes even suggesting they are offering Kenny a job to ultimately nab Butters)
  • Harley Reid to Hawthorn
  • Petracca to Hawthorn
  • Not that he's a free/pre-agent but Charlie Curnow to Sydney
  • All of the above and every other top 10 player in the league to bloody Geelong (If nothing else, I hate them for this alone)

But with no consideration to whether something like this is possible. Take Hawks for example, I'm guessing Barrass, Battle, Day, Sicily, Weddle, Wizard and maybe 1-2 others would be on high salaries? Same with Bulldogs with Bont, Richards, Naughton, Darcy? Sydney would be similar with Gulden, Heeney, Warner, Papley, Blakey etc.

Do these clubs not have salary cap issues or do they have a pile of first round draft picks that no one else is aware of? Seems to be the first thing brought up as issues if the Pies are ever linked to good players.
They’re all just w***ers that I try and avoid as much as possible

Like all of these things, they should be taken with a grain of salt and can also change.

In relation to Butters, a friend of mine attended a Hawthorn coterie lunch prior to the Melbourne and Hawthorn game a few weeks ago. The President of Box Hill said that Butters would be a Hawthorn player if Hawthorn was able to satisfy Port's trade requirements/demands.

Surely you'd know that it would be borderline impossible to have 44 players (hell, humans in general) all genuinely like each other?

At some point professionalism, love for the club/sport, natural competitive nature would have to kick in for all involved.

Tay Adams and Levi Greenwood couldn't stand each other. You wouldn't have known it out on the field. I've been told stories of other Collingwood players (even Premiership ones) who didn't like each other.

Hell, LEigh Matthews used ot talk about how hardly any Brisbane players liked Aker lol

He was never going to give door stoppers an answer on which club he's going to but that "potentially yeah" did all the talking in terms of whether he's leaving
The “you wouldn’t have known it out on the field” part is key - with May, it stands out like dogs bollocks

He knew what we thought of him on the field on Friday night 😆

The teens that sit behind me after the game asked "why are we booing him, we booed too, but we didn't know why". 😆

May's personality aside, he comes in and almost instantly makes our backline a fortress. We simply don't have a brute like that in our backline. We haven't had one since probably Lynden Dunn and that's being very complimentary to Dunny. May or Lever, Weitering, Barras, Collins, Andrews... any one of these types makes us an instant flag favourite I reckon.

Not sure why we would be going for May if Silvagni is coming?

Cochrane is being developed
TJ is being developed
Reef is being developed
Frampton is 28
Silvagni is 27
Moore is 29

Howe is our only defender with a 3 in front of his age and he’s an “undersized key” anyway

Not sure we should bother with May unless we were getting him in a deal that’s impossible to refuse

My issue with May is he displays that behaviour on the field though.

Murphy and Moore used to tell each other off all the time

That’s just how some competitive people communicate. Generally it’s nothing personal and the best will get as good as they give

Neither Murphy nor Moore have been in multiple punch ups with teammates though. There’s iron sharpening iron and then there are malignant locker-room presences - May is the latter.

Not to the extent May tells other player off.

There’s a line between being a competitive player communicating to a teammate and being a complete utter knob and May falls well and truly on the side of the latter.

Because all of these blokes are undersized. Not one is capable, in my opinion, of taking on the big brute forward that most oppos flaunt.

I'm more interested in a 190 - 195cm marking back flanker. They are worth gold today.
Plus, the only really “brute” KPF that has done a heap this year is Thilthorpe, isn’t it? Most others are either not too tall (Hogan & Fogarty) or not that dangerous otherwise

What’s a good example? I reckon Reef or TJ or someone like that has the potential to become a marking back flanker.

But not one of our backs, including Silvagni if he does come in, is capable of roughing up a big forward. If there is one thing the last two months have shown, it is that we are extremely vulnerable in defence, and are reliant on a 35yo in Howe who frankly makes up for lack of size with amazing aerial skills.

I’ll go as far as to say, I think our key issue to address in the trade period is the backline. I want us to poach one of these big brutes down back, then maybe get a big brute up forward as well for a change.

okay maybe they aren’t all brutes like Thilthorpe, but haven’t most big forwards like Treacy, Hogan, Naughton, Darcy, hell even the prancing pony, given our backline massive headaches? I mean, our captain, Darcy Moore is absolutely useless against these types

Though we had a No Dickhead Rule?

I think the issue in recent games has been that Moore is being caught between two roles.

Ideally we'd like him to come off his opponent and impact as a 3rd man up, however in the last month or so sides have been isolating him and his direct opponent so that he is required to be more accountable. The loss of Howe has exacerbated this as it leaves us with an intercepting defender short.

Couple this with sides transitioning from half back more effectively and being able to deliver the ball to a leading forward and it explains why Moore's game has suffered.

I think it's underestimated how difficult for defenders our system is when there is a break down higher up the field.

“yeah potentially” when asked about leaving the club.

“It will all come out in due time” 👀

There’s absolutely no shade from me in posting this, but you seem extremely invested in Silvagni joining the club!

Don't forget his legendary B&F speech. He is a tool that cannot be sharpened

Agree brysie. But when push comes to shove, as a key defender, and especially as the captain of your team, you have give a better account of yourself man on man, and Moore has lost far more contests than he has won. I can’t even think of one time he has overpowered / displaced his opponent and marked the ball. He is a one trick pony… either run and jump and mark the ball assuming the rest of the defence has blocked/held up their opponent. Or get out marked, which he almost always seems to be.

Then the system isn’t that good I’d suggest. Nick & Co can’t win every centre bounce or around the field stoppage
