A lacklustre last quarter by the team. Despite so many listed players in defence we gave up a lot of easy goals in that quarter.
Our 4 draftees from last year: Hynes, Jacques, Dolan and Kennedy all need considerable time in the reserves to develop their games. Neither Hynes nor Kennedy are quick but there is certainly potential with both. Dolan needs a bit more polish to his forward craft and Jacques needs to improve his disposal.
The best players were Busslinger, Scott, Gardner and Hynes. Busslinger probably the one I'd consider for promotion.

You're a harsh judge... there was some great ball movement and defence in there
Yes there were some great chains out of defence. That's the sort of play we tried at KP last night but couldn't execute against Geelong's seniors who shut down our run. But we let Geelong 2nds double their score in that last quarter.

I liked what I saw of Dolan. He could get a call up. Jaques is not banging the door down yet. Jones, Buss, Gardner all good except for those late clangers from Buss.

Coffield and L Smith solid. Kennedy a forgettable game. Hynes and Gallagher were busy. Poulter and Scott added a touch of polish but Scott may have got injured late in the game.

The last quarter doesn't take away the rest of the game. Shyte conditions, they were probably just a bit tired and eased off a bit. A 4 goal win in those conditions is worth more

Coffield's talent shines out at times. A couple times in this game, he was deep in defence, he had the vision to change direction and pull off a 40 metre kick to the 50 metre line. It opened up the game and led to scores. My major concern with him is he looks like he's lost some of his athleticism particularly after watching some of his U18 tapes. I don't think he'll ever live up to the hype now, but I still think there's a chance he can play a part in the seniors if he can use that kind of ball use and get his intercept game going maybe in the role that Williams is doing. May not get in the seniors this week, but I still have hope with him.

I also think Busslinger could learn from him a bit who generally runs and kicks in straight lines. While Buss is quite effective doing this, I don't think he's damaging enough at the moment.

Is Hynes likely a midfield / forward prospect next year? Or likely to take a few years to build his tank?

I think it’ll depend on team needs. If Treloar and Libba are still fit and available, I reckon he’ll pinch hit through the midfield but mainly play forward.

Thought Hynes was seriously impressive yesterday. Yeah, you could’ve easily pointed to one of the key backs who racked it up, and the Cats didn’t exactly make it hard but playing in that high half forward/midfield role, he really stood out. Had a great fend off on Clohesy in the first quarter off half back then dished off a sharp handball that set up a scoring chain. Felt like every touch had purpose. His kicks through the corridor were quick and gave the opposition no chance to pressure a turnover. His kicks inside 50 seem to fly in the air. As he builds more strength through his core, he’ll start taking shots from outside 50 and brushing off defenders with ease.

The main thing with Hynes is you’re not after volume you’re after impact. If he’s getting 20 touches split between midfield and forward and he’s involved in scoring chains, that’s exactly what you want. He creates match up problems strong enough to go deep one-out and quick enough to work up the ground and beat tall defenders the other way.

Naturally, at that age, he’ll need to improve his tank. I also reckon his finishing needs to be a bit more clinical he lets a few chances go begging. And he’s just got to be a touch cleaner below the knees in traffic. But if he irons those out, he’s going to be a serious weapon

Perfectly said. Agree completely. I think we are going to be very happy with this pick in a few years time.

I haven’t really seen hynes run or anything but would you say he’s about as fast as Bont? I only ask this because I remember people saying last year that he’s slow.

I definitely wouldn’t describe him as slow. He’s got what I’d call easy power that kind of smooth, effortless movement where he looks relaxed, but he covers ground at a decent clip but can shift up a gear when he needs to.

I think he is at least the equal of Bont in terms of pace.

Wasn’t able to watch yesterday, how did Dolan go? Can’t wait until he’s a permanent fixture in the 1s

Interesting that the match review article on the Bulldogs club website mentioned the following in its review of the second quarter:-

Footscray’s midfield led by Cooper Hynes and Jed Busslinger dominated the game

Just wondering if Buss spent considerable time in the ruck ( I am assuming he was not tried as an inside mid) and how others thought he performed in the role
