This should really please Dan24 but I am going to declare the 22 home and away rounds irrelevant.

Take a look at the top four. Its exactly the same as the ansett cup semi-finalists

In the Ansett cup:

Semi final 1
Essendon beat Melbourne

Semi final 2
Kangaroos beat Carlton

Final
Essendon beat Kangaroos

So it seems that provided you seed the four groups of four correctly in the first place, you will get the same result as a home and away season, whether it's 15, 22 or 30 rounds

So you could expand the ansett cup qualifying rounds to 6 (four clubs play each other H&A), promote the first and second team in each group to quarter finals, giving the top sides home ground advantage and some form of double chance. And have say a four week finals series

The whole thing would take 10 weeks.

Each year the bottom two clubs in each group move to a new group to have some vareity.

One other point. On the ansett cup

An article at the weekend has essendon crediting the ansett cup win as leading to an extra 7,000 members - the same thing happened to Hawthorn last year. This is some 700,000 dollars extra revenue. With the 125,000 prize money it's much more valuable than the McLelland trophy. Expect the Ansett cup to be elevated in it's respect soon - I just hope the corporates don't take all the seats at the Ansett GF !

The Ansett Cup Grand Final is a big event. The only thing holding it back, is that it is really a pre-season tournament.

Despite this, 75,000 saw Essendon vs Richmond in 1993.

66,000 saw St.Kilda vs Carlton in 1996

63,000 saw St.Kilda vs North Melbourne in 1998

74,000 saw Carlton vs Geelong in 1997

50,000 saw Hawthorn vs Port Adelaide in 1999

These remarkable crowds were achieved despite the Ansett Cup being a pre-season compettion. Imagine, everyone, if it wasn't a pre-season competiton, but an actual part of the season !

The Grand Final crowds, show just how much the public like a Grand Final, in any form. It also proves my argument with Roylion, correct.

Roylion has been saying to me, that if the finals series, was a seperate tourmanent to the H&A, then the Grand Final would cease to be as big as it is now. He reasoning was that the Grand Final would only be the culmination of a 4 week tournament instead of the culmination of the whole year.

I replied by saying that the fans don't care abut being the best team. The only care about winning the Grand Final. The don't care if they are the 5th best team, as long as they win the Grand Final. The fans don't care what the Grand Final represents. They just want the glory of winning the Grand Final, whether it represents the whole season, or just the 4 week finals series. They're not after the title of premiers, as much as they are after the title of Grand Final winners.

For all intents and purposes, the public sees the finals series as seperate to the H&A anyway. Sure, they're "officially" related to each other, but the fans know that performances in the H&A, where you prove you're the best are irrelevant (as pess pointed out). So making them seperate tournaments just confirms the suspicions that people have anyway.

This means, that a finals series, seperate to the H&A is just as meaningful to the public (hey, the FA CUP is, right) as it would be if it defines the whole season.

Pessimistic, you bring up an interesting point. You want the Ansett Cup more prestigious, right ? Well, if my seperate tournament (just featuring the best 8 teams, all treated equally) is used, then effectively, you are getting what you want.

While my seperate tournament is NOT the Ansett up, it is still a Grand Final to conclude the season (like the FA CUP does), seperate to any achievement that has been gained (and recognised) in the Home and Away. The Ansett Cup is a seperate tournament, and even though it is pre-season, the crowds are enourmous. So, imagine if it concluded the actual season !

Everyone wins in that scenario. The Home and away premier wins, and also the champion of the 4 week tournament wins (Grand Final winner)

Yep, you'd get what you want.

So, if this was done, you would be getting what you want, surely.
