AFL Player 25: Jaxon Prior - Re-signed for another year! - 10/9

He struggled to get to the contest at times, slow.

Still think persist. Ok with ball in hand.

I think he's a reasonable chance to improve especially considering he has gotten better as the season has gone on.

Prior is a solid athlete, has size, can kick and seems to be improving. He's still a sub 50 gamer as well

Just needs better endurance, like half our side.

This is the sort of quality analysis you simply cannot get from the mainstream footy media

We are truly blessed

I’d like to think we are all pushing humanity forwards and are collectively a triumph of the human spirit.
Or, something something something whatever… 😬

Might be harsh but he's just too in between to be useful.

He's an ok kick but hardly great and doesn't find the footy all that much. Isn't quick enough to give any drive either. There are better options for that kind of role.

He could get away with it if he was a better defender but he's not strong one on one and tbh doesn't play as tough as he looks.
Remains baffling to me that he is a walkup start in the side.

There's not much else left in the cupboard is what it basically boils down to
But this was the case at the start of the season when there were other options too.

Even with injuries, why not try a young player who's been playing well in the VFL all season like Zak Johnson? Prior is picked as a medium defender, there are a trio of talls in defence beside him, so Johnson could at least improve our use and drive out of the backline.

I don't want to harp on negatively about a player so i'll leave it after this but I just don't see it with Prior, unfortunately.

What I’ve noticed is with senior coaches that were battlers as players, they tend to empathise with battler player too much - as they see themselves in the player - and then allow them too much latitude as a result.
Back them in, sure, but there has to be a limit. I think we’re pretty close to the limit ATM.

If he was in a better side perhaps he wouldn’t look so bad, but that is true of literally every player. At some point, you need to stand on your own two feet.

Personally, I think he is too much fight or flight - i.e., a panic merchant, and he struggles to think his way through each play. He also gets turned around too easily as a defender.
He might be better as a wingman with nice kicking, or even as a defensive forward that can also be creative. But I don’t think he’s a defender. He needs to stop panicking though, at a minimum.

Reminder that we’d won our last two games and he was quite decent against the Swans. Plus we’d basically been churning through injuries on the list so changing a reasonably settled back line that had been solid over the last month wasn’t necessarily top of the list.

Yes he could make way for Johnson this week.

Prior reminds me everytime I see him run out in the essendon guernsey
There's your problem. You've made your judgment each week before the game even starts.
By the end your bias is confirmed and you come off like a freaking genius back in the thread with your amazing insight into his deficiencies. Brilliant really. You should do it more.

No his performance week on week does that 😂 don’t really need confirmation bias when he’s still shown nothing in 9 games of football
