Come the 10th of July it will be 25 years exactly since Collingwood last played a game in Geelong, How many years do you guys think it will be before they play there again? and will it happen before Pendles retires? he might retire with 400+ games none of which played at Kardinia and close to 300 of which played at the MCG.

Would be nice, but Collingwood would have to agree to give up their entrenched MCG advantage and I doubt they will.

It’s where the money is, why would the AFL let a little thing like a fair competition get in the way of making money?

Gather Round another example
MCG GF without club consultation another example.

The list is endless. Who cares anymore?

And on the 25th January 2049 it will be 50 years exactly since we last played in Geelong. And that’s the way it should be. It’s no disadvantage for the Cats to play on the MCG, whereas it is a big advantage for them to play at GMHBA.

It seems to be quite difficult to get Pies posters to even acknowledge that they get a leg up by never playing us at home. All bullshit about how it's good for Geelong to play at the MCG, nothing about Collingwood getting to play us away at their home ground.

What about the smaller vic clubs who have to make the numbers at Kardinia so clubs like Essendon,Collingwood and Carlton never have to play there. is it fair for them? Selfishly I'd love for St Kilda to host all away games against Geelong at Marvel stadium. But the part of me that wants the semblance of a fair league doesn't want that.

To be fair, every club except one does come to Geelong, not every year but they do play there. Obvious rigged fixture in favour of one team is obvious.

Essendon, Carlton and Hawthorn have all been down to GMHBA in recent years after a stretch in the wilderness, with Richmond also fixtured to play there this year. That tells me Collingwood will be back there too once they've fallen out of contention.

When the dividends get handed out at the end of the year, the Pies are at the bottom of the pile and the reason why there is so much money to give GWS, the Suns and Saints a leg up is because of the funds generated by the MCG games which incidentally the opposition clubs request. Already the AFL would be down on funds this year because of the zero round being at that weird stadium in the west where hardly anyone turned up yesterday.

So it's not a disadvantage to not receive and advantage we are entitled to. Sound logic there.

Now before you reply something stupid like "but we don't get an advantage for all our home games" try to remember that a large number of your away games are at your home ground, a massive advantage we do not enjoy.

How do the smaller clubs get more supporters and earn more money if they are relegated to s**t time slots and don't have marquee games or fk all televised games? maybe if the fixture was fairer then people would see these teams play more and actually decide to support them. Alot of immigrants coming to this country if they are gonna follow AFL I'd assume they'd choose a team based on watching some games. and they sure as hell aren't going to buy a kayo membership to choose a team.

No it’s no disadvantage at all playing a home team at the MCG in their home city on their home ground in front of their home fans. None at all. It’s a 50-50 logistical starting point. There is no reason if you lined up to perfectly equally matched teams why one should have any advantage over the other in that scenario. Great point.

Not directly relevant to your question but if you have a home stadium and enough money to spend your salary cap and not go broke, why do you care?

Does having more members make you play better? Does having more money, beyond having enough for decent training facilities, improve your onfield output?

I sure as s**t wouldn’t want people going for my team ‘because everyone else does.’

What people forget is that the MCG teams have no real home ground whereas all the interstate teams and Geelong do. And even the Pies over the past few years have had quite a few graveyard shift games. The point remains though that the blockbusters are generated by crowds turning up, not the names of the teams playing. This year having the slots the Pies have played in has been a disadvantage. They have played with the shortest prep despite it being the longest season and played against the Swans with 2 days less despite starting early in March as part of only 4 games for the round. They then have to back up with another 6 day break so have played 3 games while the majority have played only 1. When it's all said and done it is the player list that contributes more to who wins the most. Teams like Sydney and Brisbane double dipping with academy picks in the 1st round and with access to father/sons too provides the best advantage in the competition. Adelaide and Perth clubs and the Vic clubs can only access academy selections at 40 or above despite have fewer academy kids availalbe to them. It does not matter how much money a club has generated by members, it is the playing list which creates the wins.

Wow, seriously?
That's an amazing stat, so wrong but amazing.
Is that number 1 in the AFL for a team not having played at anothers ground?
Regardless of it being Geelong's request to play at the g (I don't know if it has or not) it's still just so wrong.

Who forgets that?

Doesn’t matter a lick of s**t when you host us there for our ‘home’ games

Makes you wonder why the VFL went bankrupt when it was just Vic clubs.

We don't request it.
We get told we are only getting 9 true home games so we then request that other 2 are against teams that maximize the crowd.

With the new stand we need a crowd in the region of 80k at the G to make the same money as in Geelong. That doesn't leave many teams as options for the Melbourne home games.

I do love how the Pies playing so much at home is really a disadvantage after all.

And then a whole lot of look over there.

Add a dash of ignoring the point about never playing Geelong in Geelong.

You just needed the argument that the Pies are really doing Geelong a favour by playing them at the G for the win.

its a peculiar one given every other side has played down there, including hawks / tigers at their peaks. Tigs last played there in 2017 before getting a pass during our dynasty years. But sure enough we are back there this year after coming down the other side of the hill

can't just be because of a perception Collingwood pull too many fans - they should have been playing there when off field wasn't too flash. Sounds like some head-office back scratching of some variety

It’s crazy they still can’t grasp basic concepts like revenue.

They always go back to the old, “BUUUT BUUUUT yOu AsK tO pLaY uS tHeRe.”

No, we get 9 genuine Home games and get told to pick 2 games against MCG tenants to maximise our revenue.

As you said, prior to new stand we’d need 60k at the G to break even, we made TWICE as much playing at full Kardinia.
Now with new Selwood stand and capacity basically at 40k, we’d need at least 80k at the G to break even.

It’s really not that hard but people seem to struggle grasping the concept.
