Player Watch #5: Caleb Daniel

I was at the game on the weekend (first one this year due to my shift having been weekends based recently) and I’ll be f*cked if he had the deplorable player movements we had at the dogs, where his skills used to shine. I sat level one members in the red marvel lettering seats and did anyone else notice at the lack of leads, genuine leads some of our players make? Stephen’s for example, I swear he didn’t want the football - was in the perfect position for Daniel multiple times and just danced on the spot and side to side without muttering a whimper. If he had lead at 50% rat power Daniel would have had a viable option. This happened I would say 20/25 times through the night. Maybe it’s a little bit of Daniel but mainly the rest of the boys just not providing genuine targets for him.

I'm a huge fan, but I must admit I have been surprised at how slow he is. He can clearly run all day and make position, but his sprint is ordinary.

I still think he'll be good, but we look for him too much. The game plan is clearly give it to Caleb at half back. THe opposition knows it. We all know it.

We just need another distributer there. I don't care if it is SHeez or Fisher or even Archer. We just can't be so obvious.

Theres statues on easter island that move about more than our forwards when we are coming out of defence.

Yep, I'm not writing this guy off until we see him in a backline that actually bloody moves and provides options. Night and day compared to the options he had at the Dogs. When he has pulled off a brilliant kick it's usually to a Curtis or Sheezel, I don't think that's a coincidence.

He may have had better targets at the Dogs, but they still couldn't get it to work for him there and ended up dumping him from the backline for Lachie Bramble. We got sold a lemon, now we have him for four years. We need to find him a role where he can help us.

I'm a little sympathetic to Caleb. He has more skills than most NM players. Some of the issues are the recipients - our players that can't make space, lead and then run under the ball, don't get into space quickly enough etc etc etc. Players look better when they are playing with similar class. Time will get this right.

It has been pointed out though - the Bulldogs shunted him from this role too

Much better today, but still cost us 1-2 goals with the defensive output. Feel like you can't have Daniel, Fisher and Mckercher all in the same defensive half. Archer stiffens up the defense, but we are desperate for someone who can defend (first and foramost), but also kick it - Hardeman??

We haven't had McKercher back there though.

Daniel at half back isn’t working. For various reasons.

He’s a good character and has some skills but this trade is going to be the silver medalist to the Polec trade for years to come.

I’d try and repackage him as small forward, which we lack.

Was better today in terms of the turnovers this year however Club brought him to be the distributor off half back yet then brought Fisher into the team to do the same today, add to that having osullivan down there aswell and corr at times taking kick outs.

We can't have too many players who are limited defensively down there. Daniel is woeful defending, Fisher the same ditto comben albeit he's a key position. Should only play one of Daniel or Fisher. With Archer hopefully back next week that helps with his conundrum a bit

That's a cruel comment to make, Dinkers. What if it got back to you at the next family reunion?
Yes well good point as I think both my cousin's Daniels and watto the wizard Watson follow my BF account .

They ring for advise too. Ask how I think they're going.
I was unlucky to not get drafted covid hit and then I got a bad cramp in the sprint test at the combine.

I'm somewhat sympathetic towards this bloke, but he is just too short for todays game. He can not defend the average sized punter, and god knows that the league is full of blokes considered short at 6 foot. He suffers also from a frequently missing the target by foot multiplier as well. Tries his socks off, but he's been found out within the 1st 6 weeks of a 4 year gig. Far kmee

Am I crazy to say he isn’t an upgrade on Zac fisher?
