Happy to see him back. I think Ridley and him can co-exist. Give Redman a bit of a go on the wing without too much pressure.
I actually reckon he could be a good matchup for Betts nowadays since Betts has lost some of his pace. At least he'd have him covered in the air very comfortably.

Betts without McKay to work around could be advantageous if Carlton insist on putting on Eddie's head.

They do have McGovern and Casboult still. Even Salvaging too. Why would Eddie be their primary target?

I still see Saad playing on Betts. Saad always takes the #1 small forward
Because he kicks goals? Not that he would be their primary target, but if they did. I think we might have them covered though. Cripps rolling forward might be challenging.
Just because he kicks goals doesn't mean he's a primary target.

If/when Cripps rolls forward I think Francis goes to him and Hooker/Hurley/Ridley play on Casboult/Gov/Silvagni respectively if all three are up there.

He's intercepting the ball 5.5 times a game this year, has beaten his direct opponent twice and, whilst he did have a poor first half, had a really good second half to make up for it. Why are people desperate to drop him it seems?

I don't think anyone is desperate to drop him but there is a clear issue with the balance of the back 7 to be addressed because Ridley has gone into beast mode and McKenna hasn't been playing.

Of Gleeson's most obviously direct competition, Ridley has left him behind in every aspect of the game. Francis is better in the air and is being groomed as a key defender who is also being used on mid-sized marking targets such as Heeney. That gives us 4 talls in defence with Hooker and Hurley.

In reality, he is really competing with Redman for a role as a 5th tall defender but which is really a mid-sized utility who can shut down a small forward, play in a rebounding role, etc. Redman is 187/188cm. I'd say he can comfortably play mid-sized to 191/192cm on a flanker (by this I'm excluding a player like Jack Darling who is a short but beastly KPF). However, what is the likelihood the 5th tall defender will be called on to play this tall?

So while Gleeson has Redman covered above head what we're really look at from the role is the ability to lock down on small, ability to lock down on a mid-sized player and rebound. Redman's speed is more important than Gleeson's height. He's also a better kick and generally better with ball in hand.

We then have Saad and McKenna as our two dedicated smalls depending on match-ups, etc.

We can talk about moving someone to a wing but it's not going to happen unless and until one of the defenders is developed in the role. For all the talk of McKenna playing forward it seems to me he's played in defence in the scratch matches to date.

I do not agree that there is room for an 8th specialist defender.

Accurate summary of the situation we're in. Gleeson will be very unlucky this year, as Ridley was last year.
