A 3rd Quarter walks into a bar...

the 3rd quarter asks "Did Geelong show up yet?" and the bartender says "Nah mate, they'll be about 20 minutes"

Seriously, it's 2016 and this is still happening. I love to beat the Hawks but the last 4 years of 3rd period trainwrecks have removed at least twice as many years from my life expectancy. It happens against everyone, but against the Hawks it seems to be the worst. It seems to be all mental but surely there is a solution to it.
I give the Hawks credit for fighting back in the 3Q

No it doesn't and to suggest so is niave at best.
2 years ago.. where did Dangerfield play? What about Smith and Stanley?
2 years ago is a lifetime ago when over half the team is different.
Likewise the "history" of any fading quarters, the only sample size that matters is Mondays game as it is the only one without MASSIVE variables.
ahaha yes, i agree with u - i was taking the piss out of people suggesting that the hawks game showed our 3rd Q woes are continuing from 2015 after only one game

Of course Geelong won't be as weak as last year. We could see on Monday what an effect having Dangerfield and Duncan in the midfield, along with Blicavs primarily as an onballer, had. Only a small sample size but of course those names should make the side better. It's the third-quarter fadeouts that are the real worry, and it's a problem I don't trust they have an answer to given how long it's existed.
Why should we be dwelling on the negative aspect to our rd 1 game?
We did not set the world on fire in NAB, and we outplayed the champs for 3Q.
Who would have thought that?
As if Hawthorn would not come out after 1/2 time and give it all they had. I thought we stopped their momentum in the last 5-7 mins anyway in Q3.
And then we ran over them.
One of our larger wins against them.
And if Danger had converted the unmissable....
Sure we kicked superbly before that but it is unforgivable for a player touted as top 3 in the comp to miss those and deprive us of perhaps the most perfect new team debut game ever.

As for this year we don't have enough to go on , the practice game was meaningless and Hawthorn just through everything at us in the 3rd quarter using up all their energy .Lets wait and see if the trend continues this year.

Agree with this, numbers around the ball jumped in the 3rd for the Hawks and I was quietly optimistic in the 4th they would have run out of puff....

Pretty foolish to think they wouldn't get a run on at some stage. I said it on game day that they would, unfortunately given our past it was the 3rd quarter on Monday.

Has anyone stopped to consider that their might have just been a scoring end, a 3-4 goal breeze.

During the match 20 goals were scored on the ponsford end and only 10 on the punt rd end, and it was 12 against only 2 in the second half.

Just food for though, I was at the match and it was very breezy.

Hard to imagine at the MCG but I do remember thinking the same thing during the game. Could be something with the surface...?

I'm far from an expert on the game, but I don't think you can just dismiss the last couple years of poor quarters or halves by saying we're a new team. Sure the players may be new, but it could be something that Geelong do as a club during the halftime break that has us coming out sluggish. I read a comment saying Dangerfield came out firing second half, and sure it was his first game, he was playing a blinder, and he's PFD, but could it be that he's come across with some sort of half time routine or perhaps something he does different mentally to the rest of the team?

I know as player I'm never prepared for the first few minutes of a game/half while other guys are able to flick a switch and go guns blazing from the first minute.

You're a quality poster around these parts, Dubs. But I can't agree with you here.;)

I forgave Danger pretty much the second those shots passed the goal line. And he can go on missing the odd 'gimme' if we keep seeing performances like the one he put up on Monday.

That was a debut performance for the GFC that I'll tell my grandkids about.

Many, many times.:thumbsu:

I thought I qualified that by the last part of the statement that you didn't highlight. He did deprive us of nearly the most perfect game ever. As it was , he was awesome, but not perfect.

Fair enough. I'm still OK with forgiving him for it, though.

Watching the 3rd quarter ATM and it's no where near as bad as what I thought. Yes Hawthorn turned the heat up big time but we missed some very easy goals (Mackie and Gregson). Also noticed when the heat was up out young fellas turned it over a little bit. They will get better obviously with time. We still took the game on when they had the momentum and I loved that. Few rookie mistakes that we will learn from.
Obviously not the best quarter but not the worst. They still had a real crack.

And, I think we stopped their momentum in that last 6 minutes or so.

I noticed in watching the replay that the Hawks went forward thru long kicks and getting to space.

We kept going with short frequent possession stuff - added to the fatigue that seemed to beset us - meant we would have 6 touches going forward and move 40 m… Hawks would have 2 touches and go 80.

When that fatigue hits, yo have to go long with it. Might not be the best % option all the time but at least it gives a fews secs of respite and allows a bit of a reset.

It's hard to see on TV but the reason they weren't going Long in the 3rd is often their was no one long to kick to.

How was the third quarter today? Time to identify third quarters as a problem or do we still like deluding ourselves?

Shit.

Like the first 2.

Well spotted

First quarter shrugs his shoulders..

An article from afl.com.au with some relevance to this thread:

Port in a spin as rotation stats emerge

.....

Geelong, meanwhile, is proving there is no correlation between success and heavy rotations, using the interchange just 82.7 times a game.

The Cats are yet to reach their full allocation, with some notable lows of 72 against Greater Western Sydney, 76 against Essendon and 65 when they lost Lincoln McCarthy in the first quarter against West Coast three weeks ago.

Geelong has also developed an interesting strategy of dropping its rotations significantly in the third quarter, with an average of 18.2 before lifting again to 21.8 in the final term.
