Injury A Positive Update

Yep this time last year we only had 20-22 guys available, so to say we're looking fitter is an understatement.

This season reminded me of Hawthorn 2009 when they missed the 8 after winning the premiership, whilst they had injuries throughout the year, they said most of the damage was done when most of their boys didn't have a full preseason, from my gatherings getting a full preseason into players these days is crucial and why I think we're better set up for a top 8 tilt next year than this year, the boys haven't looked quite this hungry for some time, most of these players haven't won a premiership and are really hungry for it.

Only Marsh, Shazza and Caff aren't doing full running yet, so we're every chance to have a super fit team heading into round 1 for once, really excited for that first NAB challenge.

So what's the summary of the news?

Reid, Freeman and Karnezis in full training, and all the 'shoulders': Brown, Pendlebury and Witts are progressing well:

'Only two players, Brent Macaffer and Matthew Scharenberg, are considered unlikely to be involved in full training after the Christmas break'.

Let's hope the cloud of injury is finally lifting. If it hasn't been down to appalling bad luck which we cant control, then let it be down to poor practices and sytems which we can control, and are finally - FINALLY - doing something about.

Amen, sister!

I'm excited for NAB Challenge, but wish we could either not play or wrap everyone up in cotton wool! I'm on edge all game praying no one gets injured!

I think its the first time in a long time we haven't had a majority of top shelf talent booked in for surgery. As mentioned above we have eerie similarities to Hawthorn's '09 side that had 15 (maybe more, not sure) players booked in for surgery by the end of the season and they just couldn't back up after their premiership.

It goes to show you how professional the AFL has become when 10 - 15 years ago a preseason involved running laps and a few kick to kick sessions before Christmas. After the break they ramped up skills work and kept running and tinkered with a loose game plan. Now everything is recorded, videoed, documented, reviewed, measured and compared. Who would want to be a professional athlete?

I have to say though, if we have serious injuries in the NAB challenge games again this year I think I may have a mental breakdown.

At least you'll have plenty of company in the loony bin [sorry, not very PC, I know].
