After a similar thread on the Eagles board, I thought I'd ask my fellow Cats fans what your earliest memories are of supporting the mighty Cats??

Who were your favourite players?? What was the first Geelong game you went to see?? What was the best Geelong game you went to and also the worst?? What was the best mark and goal you saw from a Geelong player??

As for me, my first game was back in 1985 at Waverley... Geelong vs Hawthorn in round one. I remember going with my Dad and looking up at the scoreboard a lot because it was closer for me to see with my bad eyesight. Geelong won and Gary Ablett kicked a bag of goals, so my first game was a good one. :)

My favourite players were Gary Ablett, Paul Couch, Mark Bairstow, Garry Hocking and currently, Corey Enright, Joel Corey and Darren Milburn.

Gary Ablett took many memorable marks and kicked many freakish goals in his career, way too many to mention. The one goal that stands out for me was one he kicked against Essendon in 1995 at the MCG.... a left foot snap from the boundary line in the last term. It was the first time I can remember my Dad ever jumping up with my brother and I at the footy... that's how good it was!!

As for the best and worst games, the best would be the 1989 and 1995 Preliminary Finals against Essendon and Richmond, the worst without doubt was the 1994 Grand Final against the West Coast Eagles.

One of the best games (and worst games since we lost) I saw was Geel v Haw Round 6 1989 at Princes Park. Two great sides playing attacking footy. Gazza killed them in the first half playing on the ball and at half time we were up by 49 points. Hawthorn came back and won by a couple of goals. Both sides kicked around 25 goals. Gavin Excel kicked 9 goals! It was also the game where Brereton cleaned up Yeates and was the main reason Yeates ran through him in the GF.

That game is the last time I cried after a football game. I just couldn't believe that Geelong could get 10 goals up, kick 25.13.163 and still lose the game... I was only 10 at the time.

I remember watching Gavin Exell when he played in the Bendigo league before he went to Geelong, he was a gun forward in that competition. He seemed to do well initially for Geelong, then struggle for form and eventually faded out of AFL football.

Who were your favourite players??

Mark Bairstow,Andrew Bews & John Barnes

What was the first Geelong game you went to see??
Not sure, but I went to the odd game in about 1987/88

Best would be the final against Carlton at Artic Park in 1994.With Couch,Bairstow & Buddha out,we were no chance.Oh how wrong that prediction was.
Worst game was rd1 1990 [I think] at Artic Park against Hawthorn.

What was the best mark and goal you saw from a Geelong player??

Best goal was probably Ablett Snr against Essendon in the game he kicked 14 & Fish kicked 10.Ablett snapped the ball over his head from the boundary line.

Was that the game Jason Dunstall kicked the first of his 2 bags of 12 goals against us as Hawthorn won by 19 goals?? I was at that game... we tired very badly after half time, was a very ordinary loss.

That's the game.

Yeah it was a shocker... we actually hit the front at the start of the 3rd quarter only to kick one of the last 20 goals.

Best Goal:
1989 Round 9 v Collingwood MCG.
Big crowd that day and the cats were coming home in the last quarter. Ablett's goal where he fights off several defenders through the centre (and Robert Scott!), takes a bounce and bangs it home to seal the game and prompt the call from Sandy Roberts "...what more can you say"

My first Geelong game was against Hawthorn at vfl park , i think in 1980 . All i remember is that the cats won and kicked over 100 points which got me excited.
My cousin tells me the worst ever gfc game was the 1989 qualifying final against essendon. He left at half time and went to the movies .
I reckon the 94 prelim v north was the best game i have seen ,magic.
My first favorite player was Terry Bright. He kicked 4 goals in quarter at vfl park in the early 80s and my cousin bought me his sew on badge fantastic.

I remember listening to that game on the radio... we never looked like winning after a bad start and were lucky not to lose by more. The final score of 24.13.157 to 11.15.81 flattered Geelong in the end, but provided the kick up the arse we needed to turn things around and almost win the flag.

I was at that game... that was on my 11th birthday!! :D

I don't remember too much about the game itself, just that Geelong won and it started to rain in the last quarter.
