* A GROIN injury has ruled Simon Black out of today's clash with the Cats in Geelong and also potentially shattered his dream of playing senior rep football.
Brisbane's hopes of an unlikely upset of the reigning premiers could be further diminished come bounce-down with fellow co-captain Jonathan Brown also under an injury cloud.
Brown is captain of the Big V and for once every Victorian, bar Cats fans, will be hoping he takes his place today at Skilled Stadium and is available to lead his state into battle at the MCG next weekend.
Black skipped training on Thursday and didn't join his teammates for the flight to Melbourne yesterday.
He also was absent from a brief training session across the road from the team hotel last night.
Brown did join in and, provided he pulls up well this morning, should still take his place – even if he is not 100 per cent fit.
Lions coach Leigh Matthews refused to confirm Black's withdrawal, or the nature of his injury, but he did say any players from his club who were unable to play today would be ruled out of the Hall of Fame All-Star match next weekend – where Black has been named Dream Team vice-captain.
The 2002 Brownlow medallist is understood to be battling a groin injury, while Brown appeared to receive treatment to his hip on Thursday night.
The Lions superstars are two of the headline acts next week and the withdrawal of either or both would be a massive blow to the concept.
"I think it is a given, if you don't play this weekend you don't play the Hall of Fame game," Matthews said. "I don't think all of a sudden you are going to be able to play in that kind of game unless you play this week."
Brisbane has seven players in the two squads – Brown, Daniel Bradshaw, Nigel Lappin and Luke Power for Victoria, and Black, Jamie Charman and Matthew Leuenberger for the Dream Team.
Lappin is already ruled out with an achilles tendon problem that has sidelined him for the past two games, and he will not make this weekend's cut of the Victorian squad from 40 to 30.
The Lions need Brown to produce a big match against the unbeaten defending premiers, who will be looking to re-assert some authority on the competition after falling over the line by a point against Fremantle last week.
"He's had a few things that are troubling him," Matthews said of Brown.
"He hasn't been dominating the game but has physical issues that he has to deal with and that's a frustration for him for sure."
