Seriously, how are we meant to fit Annable in the team if we can't even find Levi Midfield minutes and Marshall can only scrape in as a sub. I know we're lucky to have so many elite mids coming through, but damn. Couldn't we get an elite defender or forward instead?

2027.

Next year we’ve got more mids and small defenders.

At the start of the year we said how are we ever going to fit all the great defenders we have on our list in.

It is a blessing having very good academy & father sons to choose from recently and next year.
A pity one was not a KPP though.

I doubt the club would pass on Annable, but if a KPP was available via a trade or draft should they consider it.

Not so long-ago posters here were bagging our club and academy for not producing midfielders. Sydney were lauded for their academy Mids. Here we are now.
Our academy has only produced one mid to date. Annable will be the second.

*not counting Keays.

So, our academy is still shyte.
Fletcher is not a mid.
Marshall still a question mark. We won't know for a few years yet, and the only one we can maybe count in Keays we delisted.

Sack the lot of'em.

Some people read things in a funny way.

Fletcher is 100% due to his father, I wouldn't count the academy's involvement.

Marshall was in Vic from U16, year 10. Played for Vic Metro at the U16's champs. Played for Sandringham for 3 years. Only suited up for the Lions when he wasn't selected by Sandringham as a bottom age player. Not sure I'd credit his development to the academy either.

So who was the academy mid you were referring to, Briz? Jacob Allison?

I think Neale is goneski after 2026, and that will open up more opportunities. At least, if I were West Coast I'd be offering a nice package to move west where he wants to be in retirement, plus the promise of a future coaching gig.

Dunkley also hits 30 at the beginning of the 2027 season. Maybe as he ages he spends more time forward instead of in the middle.

Not a potential Lion in this year's draft but Cooper Hodge kicked his first goal in Lions colours on the weekend.
If the mooted getting rid of father/sons gets adopted he wont be available to the Hawks at all, his only options would be open draft or Lions via the academy.

Would be worth getting rid of it for the melts alone.

Interesting that Cooper has not been that highly rated but to my untrained eye he appears to play better the higher level he plays, could be one of those types.

My gut feel is if they get rid of father sons, then all academies are gone as well.

The top two kids in next years draft look to be a Port nga kid and Carlton father son kid.

Essendon have a very highly rated father son in 2027.

Literally the only clubs that don't have decent kids in the near future are West Coast and St Kilda.

I love the father-son rule, it’s a tradition that doesn’t need to change. The only thing that needs to change is to limit how many academy or NGA picks you can get in a draft. Why give in to St Kilda’s constant whinging? It isn’t the competitions fault they have a lengthening history of picking the wrong kids, that’s on them.

FS should stay, I like it. It is a BS rule, but so are so many other things about our sport. It is part of the commercial arm of the game and helps clubs market.

St Kilda are dumb because if they get FS down the track it'll be a huge marketing opportunity for them as an otherwise irrelevant club.

They could just tweak it so that you pay a 10 or 20% premium in points or something if you want to match.

I got the impression from all of Greg Swann's recent interviews that F/S and Academies aren't going anywhere, just that clubs should pay fair price which he believes they will be from this year onwards.

I'm not expecting anything to change and the AFL to gaslight the Saints whingeing.

Caro's reporting on the Commission being very open to it. I'd be surprised if it happened this year but seems like its a real chance to go sometime in the future.

Way too premature for mine.

We haven't even seen this draft play out, with the reduced points values, as yet.

Absolute amateur hour too if they made changes to this draft, after not making changes last year, on the (correct) basis that that clubs had already set up for that draft.

Even if changes were announced for future drafts, before the draft this year, again, it reflects poorly on the AFL "not getting it right" last year. It would also be plainly obvious that they're only reacting to "noise".

Leave it as is for the moment, and even better, come out and announce it, the sooner the better. There are plenty of other things that need addressing first.

Current AFL administration (minus Swann) = amateur, so you never know.

Also, I got the feeling that the appeal of definitely being able to play with his brother (and sister for aflw in the future) was what got Will to commit to the Lions. So glad they did.
