One thing about champions is they are distinguished solely by first name - not nickname - alone.

E.g. LeBron, Zlatan, Kobe...

In AFL we only read about "Cyril", he's undoubtedly achieved that status.

Who else? Bud? Or is that a nickname?

E.g. Plugger, Spider, Jacko et al havent reached the same ceiling.

Name needs to be unique, if there were 6 Cyril's running around I'm sure it would need more context. I doubt people are confused who you are talking about when you mention "Majak"

And your idea of Champions doesn't work just by first name. If I were to say "Matthew", I could be referring to any number of great players.

It is a very Australian thing to use nicknames, especially among sporting teams.
The commonality of most Australian first names means AFL first names of champions are not particularly distinctive.

"Joel" doesn't mean anything else in Geelong. Jimmy and Paddy too, although they're kind of nicknames.

Notably 3 incredibly distinctive names. Which isn't even always the case....what about Zidane? Pele? Messi? I suppose they are worse than Zlatan?

Plugger definitely reached that ceiling ...and went right on past it. As previously mentioned, a nickname in Aust can take precedence over a first name.
