it's funny because almost every other great player nba is recognizable by first name. Larry, earvin, charles, hakeem, wilt, oscar, shaq, kobe, isiah, moses, lebron, steph, timmy, carmelo, dirk.Gotta tell you, Jordan was never Michael.

One thing about champions is they are distinguished solely by first name - not nickname - alone.
E.g. LeBron, Zlatan, Kobe...
In AFL we only read about "Cyril", he's undoubtedly achieved that status.
Who else? Bud? Or is that a nickname?
E.g. Plugger, Spider, Jacko et al havent reached the same ceiling.
You mean Bird, Magic, Sir Charles/Chuck/Barkley/The Round Mound of Rebound, The Dream...it's funny because almost every other great player nba is recognizable by first name. Larry, earvin, charles, hakeem, wilt, oscar, shaq, kobe, isiah, moses, lebron, steph, timmy, carmelo, dirk.
Sure he was. There was a whole Gatorade commercial campaign around "Be Like Mike".Gotta tell you, Jordan was never Michael.

. And, well, it's advertising. Most of the time, it was Jordan or even MJ.Yeah MJ mostly. Michael was generally reserved for the Jackson version.True, but it's not Michael . And, well, it's advertising. Most of the time, it was Jordan or even MJ.
That's a catchphrase though. Drop the 'Be like' bit and just start saying Mike, and see how many people know who you're talking about.Sure he was. There was a whole Gatorade commercial campaign around "Be Like Mike".

Max/Maxxy/Maximus/The Beard!
Man I loved our best ever spin bowler, Shano.
... not a dry.. in the house..Not sure how Jack Riewoldt has earned 1st name status, but it seems he has. Considering how common the name Jack is.
Nick Riewoldt was always just "Riewoldt". When Jack emerged around 2010 and people started talking about him it had to be "Jack Riewoldt" because if you said "Riewoldt" everyone would assume you were talking about Nick.
Then he started getting the nickname "Jumping Jack" so that would've cemented the first name thing. Eventually it just became easier to say "Jack" rather than "Jack Riewoldt".
