27 years old and still hasn’t made it? Not going to be in our next flag push so why invest a list spot and games into him.
I have no opinion on Lienert but find it laughable to suggest a 27 year old won't be around for our next flag push. It really shouldn't take us that long to become contenders unless we do a Carlton and go backwards instead of forward.

In three years time we should have atleast a dozen or more of our current youngsters with 60-100 games experience. If we’re not pushing into September at that stage then we don’t have the right crop.

I think given our list profile we should be aiming for a flag in 2025-26. It’s pretty fair to say that a bloke who isn’t best 22 in a 3rd-4th side at 27 years old won’t be best 22 in a premiership side at 31.

There’s just no point giving games to a guy like Lienert over guys like McPherson, Worrell or Hinge. IMO at this point in our rebuild every recruiting decision we make should be looking at players we genuinely believe have potential to play in our next flag, and Lienert is obviously not that.

An area we could get an advantage in is the Irish lads..
This is an area we should be investing in.
We have dabbled previously with no success but that was under the old regime.
Other clubs are plucking good pick-ups and they are essentially free in terms of draft capital.
With Burgess now on board and a decent coaching group we could fast track development.

The issue is home sickness and I am not convinced its worth chasing that right now, not in a covid world. Plus I am not sure any will want to come at this point in time. Not a political post, but our country isn't viewed favourably internationally for its over the top approach to covid management. The last thing Irish players would want is to feel they are stuck here and not allowed to fly home and see family.

If we have minimal injuries next year, the competition at the selection table will be fierce. I do think we are going to surprise a lot of people next year.

I did initially think Lienert would be worth the pick up but he isn't. We'd be wasting his time.

Happy for Rowe to get 1 more year with that extra preseason in him. Big adjustment for him as well. He'd have been used to getting clear of his opponent and used as a target at SANFL level. In our system nearly all our entries are to Tex on a lead or long, high and deep. Trying to hit up Rowe 10m clear of an opponent 40 out is a big no no in terms of our forward entry strategy.

Rowe will easily be one of (of not THE) biggest beneficiary of Burgess. Properly AFL fit and Rowe will be very usefull, wont get to a Papley level but in the next rung down of very good small forwards.

We already have McPherson, Hinge & plenty of backmen.

We could do with a quality small forward though!

Woodcock is not quality. Mutineer might be salivating over that one ripping game he had in the SANFL final, but we’ve already got a small SANFL overachiever as small fwd in Rowe. Just more of the same.

As an Irishman myself I’d love to see it. But it’s high risk, high reward type stuff. We seem to be pretty risk adverse so I don’t see it happening

Bullshit.

We're not talking a top shelf footballer here but he's a whole lot better than you seem to think.

Unlike you I watch a lot of football, Woodcock is a very handy footballer, in fact he's played more midfield in the SANFL than he has up forward and proven to be very effective with his clearance work.

Yeah him and the other 500 blokes you rekn can win a brownlow

No more rejects/delists from other clubs thanks.. no matter how promising they may have been in the past..

unless its a top 5/10 rated player at their club or a youngster that was a bloody good prospect in their draft year but has just been starved of opportunty.. leave them on the table.

we’ve got a heap of the workhorse, role playing types to do the grunt work already.. anything we trade and draft in from now needs to be class, talent, highly skilled and preferrably with speed and xfactor.

There’s that plus our appalling strategy that limits the impact players can have on games. A couple of hit ups plus a squirt around a stoppage or 5 and there’s 3-4 more touches and outcomes. But we’re so fixated with an exact blueprint that requires continuity within games for fear that if it works it doesn’t work exactly as planned.

A small forward is a "role player" no matter how you slice and dice it and none of our current guys have truly nailed down that spot.
McAdam is really the one we need to get his game up to a consistent AFL level because he's the only one that has all facets of that role within his scope.

He's the one I'd be putting on the trade table for next year. 26 at the start of next year, hasn't really cemented his spot he could get a good pick upgrade, maybe a 2nd into a first.

A common denominator for the last three times we’ve pushed in finals is that we’ve had a prominent goalkicking small forward - Porplyzia, then Callinan, then Betts. A lot of the good sides over the past few years have had one, whether it be a crumber or more of a marking type. You can’t rely on your KPFs to do all the goalkicking (unless you’re Geelong with Hawkins and Cameron)

That guy for us could be McAdam, or that could be someone we get through the draft. Rowe maybe as well, but that seems less likely at this point. Need to find and develop someone that can be really dangerous from a goal sense perspective, and I’m not sure that’s Woodcock from what I’ve seen (I’ll happily eat my words if I’m proven wrong in a few years)

Who knows? - With the fitness plan Burgess may have in store, he may finally get really fit to impact games for a lot longer and he could be a great fit in the push for a flag. I would love to see him at peak fitness along with young Cook at half forward weaving magic. that is 2 absolute x factor type medium forwards. Then having The beacon that Thilthorpe will be with Fogarty as a lead up forward..as big Kev used to say..I'm excited.

Get that small pressure forward that can hit the scoreboard (is that extra fit Rowe??? - maybe, maybe not) to compliment them and that is the making of a seriously imposing forward structure..should it all click

It's probably a smaller part of what is the common denominator, which is you need 2-3 guys who are kicking 30+ a year to go deep in finals. Whether that's smalls/KPFs/midfielders doesn't matter as much as long as you have that goalkicking power.

I don't know if fitness is McAdams issue, it's more he's as one way as it gets.

Really, I'd be surprised if McAdam beats out Gollant in 2022, and he's on our list in 2023 at this point.

It's work rate that's holding him back. He improved this year, but if we can get him fitter and hungrier he should make it.

Be a nice pick up with

Not going to cost anymore than a 1 year rookie contract to find out....

There you go..that's the challenge that the club could put to McAdam..get very fit and there is the guy that we see as a direct competition for that pure medium forward spot. Let them push each other and may the best man win
