Was 2015 seriously the first year of Mackay's 4 year contract?
Someone called into MMM this morning, it was supposed to be about Danger but the caller was spewing about 4 years to MacKay and KG whilst trying to change subject agreed with him.

It is amazing that we still have him for another 3 years, I just can't comprehend it. It's the worst contract in our clubs history. No doubt.

Be right back, about to be sick.

Worse than the Tippett one?

Probably yes

Probably no. The Mackay contract only affects one player, one position on the team list. The Tiprat contract ended up costing us at least 3x 1st round draft picks and 3x 2nd round draft picks. The Tiprat contract will end up hurting the whole club & team for many years. Mackay's contract is an inconvenience at best.

So our best player has just f-d off back to Victoria, the guy who was our best player last year wants to sign an unprecedented long term deal, and we want to trim it back a year?

If that's true, we are a bigger joke than I thought.

I thought his "4 year deal" was a 3 year extension, a year before the previous contract finished? So this was actually the last year of his previous contract, and now his "new" 3 year deal begins. Oh God. That's almost worse...

He was listed as a Free Agent in 2014. The announcement after his 2012 re-signing was "for 3 years", so the 2014 listing was a surprise.

Maybe he'll be a surprise FA in 2016. *Fingers crossed*

Been looking at some old articles. Only one I can find that calls Mackay a FA is MMM. It calls him a RFA. That means in 2014 he was one of the highest paid players at the club. Vomit. All contract articles saying 4 years. Vomit again.

Here's our announcement:

Top 25% (or 10 players)

My point was his 3 year deal in 2012 put him up at RFA in 2014... so 2015 was not a guaranteed year. There's hope that extends to his 2017/18. Hope; lots of it.

4 years may have been acceptable if he was cheap. Big problem is he eats up 400k of our salary cap per year when he's only worth whatever we we're paying Martin.

Talia offered 5 years wants 6. Finally we are getting away from the standard 3 year contract extensions. Give him 6 if he wants it!

what if he Hentchels himself two years in. 6 years is too long IMHO.

We're not paying Martin anything
