I’m irrationally annoyed by this lol. How can they get this right 21 years ago but not today?
IIRC Brisbane were the higher ranked team in 2002 and chose maroon jumper with maroon shorts. Collingwood were directed to wear white shorts however Eddie McGuire successfully lobbied for both teams to wear dark shorts as the colours were different enough to not clash.

Eddie made it a personal mission to put Collingwood in predominantly black, said it was a throwback. IMO their best strip is the 1990 premiership style with black or white shorts
Rarely see it now

Was it really a throwback though? Back in 18-dickety, the guernsey was a hand-knitted mix of black and white, with a number panel on the back, no?

Of course

From memory it was to copy the invincibles of the 1920s

The away team has worn white shorts for a very long time now. Collingwood finished on top so they are the home team.
Except when they dont and for many years including last time these teams met in grand finals

get stuffed, respectfully. When you finish 1st you don't get told what to wear
No, it's called wearing the best combination on the day for the best contrast.

Fact of the matter is, neither team need to be in white shorts at all.

Did you care about this in the 2010 qualifying and 2011 prelim? You get to wear your home jumper, that's that. Both teams in home shorts would be fine, but if one team must wear white shorts, it's the one with white as a core element on their jumper. It's a club colour.

Geelong played 2 grand finals in white shorts when they were the higher seed.

Away team in white shorts has been the norm for many years
Ironically, 20 years ago they were implementing a progressive policy.

White shorts for mine will always have their place in footy, but their present use is much of the time arbitrary - this decision is a perfect example.

*White shorts policy is good for the game.
*Geelong look better in white shorts than navy, and probably would've worn them against any other team in the 2022 gf.
*The team that won the higher ranking prelim should get dibs on their entire Grand Final kit.

Are these hot takes? 🤷‍♂️
