AFL Corruption Again ........

This is how ridiculous the compo pick for Motlop is.

In 2012, Richmond signed Troy Chaplin to 3 year, $1.3mil deal with an option for a 4th year. Port Adelaide received a 2nd round compensation pick.

In 2013 (Chaplin’s first year of his contract) the salary cap was $9,139,000.

Motlop signs for $2mil over 4 years
In 2018 (Motlop’s first year of his contract) the salary cap will be $12,594,368.

The ratio of 2013 to 2018 is 0.7256.

This means Chaplin’s contract is worth $1.79mil over 3 years, approx $600k per year in current terms.

Motlop’s contract at $2mil over 4 years would be worth $1.45mil over 4 years in 2013. An average of $362,500.

Even if his contract is worth $2.4mil over 4 years, it is still only a similar amount per year to Chaplin. The only difference is Chaplin’s contract had a fourth year option.

Chaplin turned 27 in 2013, was a restricted free agent, and pick 15 in the 2003 draft.

Motlop will turn 27 in 2018 (almost identical age to Chaplin), was a restricted free agent, and pick 39 in the 2008 draft.

Further, the AFL said that they were going to be stricter on handing out compensation more recently.

It should never have been end of first round compo, it shouldn’t have even been second round compo or end of second round compo if Motlop is only receiving $500k per year. It should be third round compo.

And, if Rockliffs contract is worth $650k a year, it should be second round compo at best as it is under $500k in 2013 terms.

I don't even think it should be that complicated. No bands. It should be based on size of contract e.g. wage per year. And maybe the players age over and against each other player. You run your finger down a chart - Franklin goes to Swans, "oh look at that he's top of the list Hawks get pick 1". Sucks to be you Melbourne. "Motlop you are on a midrange contract pick 20". Suck to be a minnow but they got spit roasted during the expansion era so whatever. I mean this essentially what the AFL do but keep it secret because they don't want to be publishing players' wages which is fair enough.

It could be straightforward, a little complicated, but fair for everyone.

There should be no top 10 compensation a benefit of failing to make finals.

Picks 11-55 form compensation picks. There are 4 at each pick level. If you are in the top 4 contracts in the AFL you get pick 11, next 4 get pick 12 etc. This allows for the top 180 salaries to be compensated which is on average top 10 players per club. The picks will remain the pick issued by the compensation rules while all other picks will move around these picks. If there are two FA’s at the same pick level, the higher ratio of the two contracts will get the higher pick, if they are the same, the first contract signed gets the higher pick/

The way the tiers are worked out is by multiplying the total value of each players current contract by their yearly salary.

For example Dustin Martins contract would be worth 8.4mil x 1.2mil = 10.08

Motlop’s contract if 2 mil over 4 years would be worth 2 x 0.5 = 1
However, if his contract was 3 years it would have to be worth approximately $1.74mil (580k) per season to get the same value.

Now the next issue would be restricted versus unrestricted. FA compo should only apply to restricted as it represents the top 10 earners on your list. Compensation should also only be available the first time they become a free agent and they must be no older than 29 by the end of the following season.

There will also be a compensation equalisation points table. Basically if you had pick 15 in the draft but due to compo it went back to pick 17, you would collect the
Points difference in the points table (picks that were used in the draft only). Obviously all teams would collect points BUT a team that received one compensation pick would not gain points for the movement to their draft picks caused by that pick.

The equalisation points table will be used for two purposes. Firstly, any the points from any compensation picks received will count against your total. Secondly, a positive balance can be used towards matching father son or academy bids.

Although there are multiple criteria this would be a perfectly fair system so all clubs knew exactly where they stood. If a team wanted to take a player but you didn’t like the compensation you could make them pay more or match their bid.

Except of course, they're not at all alike.

the first case involve rules that have been in place since the VFL started and was implemented the same way every year.

The second is a secret formula that nobody knows any details for and is thus highly open to manipulation by the league.

Except for the year they actually gave us a home final you mean?

Anyway, I'm pointing out that as Geelong supporters we are damned if we do, and damned if we don't. People are sick of us winning games and being near the top after so long, I get it. It's good to be hated, because it means teams are somewhat jealous.

Gary Ablett, pick 24 and 208 fourth-round pick (Gold Coast) has been traded to Geelong in exchange for pick 19 and 2018 second-round pick.

Well bugger me, #19 which Geelong rec'd for Motlop was used to secure Gary Ablett.

Who would of thought that would happen ??

Except that you get 11....

But hey, keep sooking. The salt is the only thing keeping Geleong's economy going. (well, that and people working in Melbourne, just like any other suburb)

You are still confused about what is home and what is away?
Still?
Even after you travelled away to Geelong's home earlier in the year? Did the penny not drop then?

"Here, have a good pick because we only give you 7 home games a year."

".......in a clean stadium with taxpayer funded upgrades on a regular basis"

sensational.. so half baked players can garner a crap load of money for nothing.. dire situation.. many players are all
terminably sorted by dubious contracts and they perform once before they get the contract and then once getting the
contract they never perform again.. sucks balls that does... get nothing eh dude..

Motlop compensation pick... how FIXED was that?
Also allowing clubs to trade after the deadline? clubs were still getting s**t done at 30 minutes after deadline?

Trades can still be processed after the deadline if the have the signed paperwork prior to 2pm

I would suggest they were forming and orderly queue at the computer :)

Thats a nice poetic way of saying its a farce, you must work for the AFL? :p

and what was different about that year?

Could it have had anything to do with there being 4 finals in Melbourne that weekend and the AFL not being able to play 4 games in 3 days on the one ground?

Yes, it did differ from the usual rule, but there was a good reason for it, and it was made clear at the time that it was for a specific reason.

You think you can't travel for a home game, or they must be at one ground?

About half the league doesn't play all their 'home' games at one ground. Get over yourselves.

Funny how everyone now decides to call corruption over this when it’s painfully obvious the AFL has manufactured the last 2 premiership winners...

If the afl wanted to manufacture any premierships it would have been with their expansion clubs.

Sorry to disappoint but we can clearly survive 37 years of irrelevance and still fill the G by ourselves and be the powerhouse club we are.
