Speaking as a Lions fan, I don't care. The preseason is months long, an extra week isn't an issue.
At the elite level it matters though. Whether you care or not these teams are now managing different season preparations and early season management plans than others.

From week one of the season we're already navigating a more significant imbalance than if you start home or away.

I've got no issue with travelling to GC for round 1, so be it, but the teams should all be starting the season the same weekend.

Tell you what, if I see any of these teams publicly come out with that position, then I'll concede. Until then, I remain unconvinced.

Who cares what the name is? The idea is a good one in terms of growing the game in non-traditional states. Are there any objections besides the name?
Is this gather round mark II? I thought this years version was a win.

They won't, but it doesn't mean it isn't a thing.

It's objectively skewed from the beginning of the season, this will no doubt impact early season games, we just don't know who has the advantage yet.

No it is not a additional game like gather round.

As for the round zero name it is due to it being a split round of 5, 6 or 7. It has happened before with Hawthorn/Essendon kicking off the 1985 season early by playing there round 3 game prior to round 1.

Sounds like a load of pretentious clap trap/garbage to me.

For the record, I don't mind if Carlton and Richmond don't kick off the season officially in round round 1 or if we have to the play the Brisbane Lions in round one, the whole concept of this NSW and QLD led Round Zero round one concept is cheap and unnecessary US Sports commercialised crap that our game can do without

What next ? Footage of players skateboarding into the grounds carpark ?

Another annoying thing with round zero is that it's going to distort the ladder for the majority of the season (at least until the round zero teams get their second bye). It's pretty silly starting the season with 8 teams having played one more game than the others.

I think most sane people would be able to do the rather simple maths to work it out

How is putting a platform 0 next to platform 1 not in the correct order?

The reason things often start from 1 is to align cardinal and ordinal numbers. (item 1 is the 1st item, item 2 is the 2nd item, etc).

But we never use ordinal numbers to refer to rounds in the AFL. “GWS defeated Suns in the 5th round” is not a thing.

We don’t use ordinal numbers for station platforms either because of the ambiguity over the term ‘platform’. (The “3rd platform” typically refers to the physical structure that people stand on to wait for the train, rather than the side the structure that the train departs from)

So why not use round 0?
Because we count rounds and zero on its own isn't a number but the absence of a number.

Anyway the only reason this s**t exists is cos the AFL has nothing on right now so a bunch of people talking about how stupid zero sounds or whatever other farcical crap this is is exactly what they want. Its gives them a media presence and a social media presence when they shouldn't have one cos nothing is happening. So maybe we should ignore it in the hope it goes away.

Next we will have wildcard round for the Finals. Last thing I want

Think of the tv ratings and Bigfooty server meltdowns when one (or both of) Essendon and Richmond are within reach of a finals spot, only to blow their chance at the final hurdle :p

You mean apart from having those states each having two teams that have been there for years?
Having two sides in each side means nothing though.

The fact is, Gold Coast and Giants still get small crowds most weeks and the game is not growing in Western Sydney likes they hoped.

The game is headed in a fairly good direction in QLD but there’s always opportunity for more growth.
