not sure why rioli or betts would get a game ahead of martin.

martin is just as effective as a forward when he is down there.

The issue is we're talking about a small forward role. Betts has kicked 49 goals and Martin has kicked 19. Betts is 4th in the goalkicking, Martin is 55th.

Martin is a gun and has had a great year, but we're comparing apples with oranges.

Wingard has probably blurred the lines a bit here because he's 2nd in the Coleman and is averaging 20 touches. There isn't another player in the AFL close to him on the small forward spectrum, and he could be easily picked on either the flank or in the pocket.

Everyone else is either competing for a pocket spot (Rioli, Betts, Bruest, Stringer) or a half forward flank spot (Martin, Gray, Higgins, potentially Dangerfield if they want to pick him there instead of the midfield)

AA captain. Has had two quiet games. Averages high numbers across the board and 15 goals in 17 games. So much so, that oppositions best mids are now taking him at the stoppages. He is AA without a doubt.

Missed three games already, looks set to miss another two. Has had more than two average games, been a few meh games where he's had the touches but not done much with them. If he misses the games then he's borderline.

Can't tell if serious? Wingard and Betts both this year have higher numbers of score involement then rioli, Wingard and Rioli are both equal for goal assist (with betts only a couple behind), not to mention betts kicking 17 goals more then him and wingard kicking 15 goals more then him... Of course betts and wingard deserve to be AA over rioli.
thank you

I know, but there are a few cases over the years in which a Hawthorn forward dominated and still didn't make the team. See Roughead in 2008 when he kicked 75 goals/51 behinds, Gunston last year when he kicked 58 goals and Breust in season 2012 when he kicked 45 goals, Gibson winning our Best & Fairest during a Premiership year in 2013 doesn't even make the team let alone the 40-man squad, they pick Andrew Mackie instead lol.

Those are just some examples of Hawthorn players being snubbed over the years.
gibson hodge mitchell should make it this year, you happy?

Our Josh Kennedy has been remarkable over the last 2 months and I feel like he has gone a little unnoticed. He's either held our midfield together on his own in losses or been unstoppable as he drives us to wins. 27 touches or more for the last 10 weeks consecutively, arguably BOG in about 5 of them. He started the year well, fell off a bit for about a month but is back to being brilliant. He'll likely still lead the league in contested possessions and clearances once this round is done and could lead the league in disposals too (equal with Hannebery atm). He's also kicked 12 goals which isn't a standout for midfielders but it's competitive.

I just think he has to at least be in the squad and should be pushing the bench pretty hard. If he's competing with the likes of Swan, Pendlebury, Mundy, Neale, Armitage, Lewis then I think he has a very strong case for inclusion ahead of those guys.

Hannebery deserves his spot in the AA 22 but I feel he might be carrying an injury of some sort atm. He's still winning big numbers but doesn't seem to quite have the punch and explosive running he had for the first 3 months of the year. Spending less time in the guts of the midfield, more time on a wing.

Don't think we are getting 4 aa's

Rance a lock

Delideo has missed to many games, otherwise would be very close

J roo has been quite the last month which I think might cost him

Dusty probably a 50/50 proposition

Cotchin should make the squad, probably just out of the 22

No doubt he has been very good this year and would be a lock if he played 22 or even 20. Personally unless you are having a year like Fyfe I'm not a huge fan on players missing a significant amount of games and still making it.

To a point I agree but, hodge is hawthorns second best player this season by a comfortable margin. His numbers are around 30 a game. I think people just 'assume' he coasts along and has a big reputation so therefor needs to hit higher numbers than others but I'm quite robust about this. 17 games and 15 of em high quality should easily be enough.

I'm not going to add to what I already have. Hating the bloke is one thing, despising is another. It is incredible how his numbers are high but did nothing with them but fyfe is clean as a whistle.

Based on that stevie J is a lock.

A better measure is how many players average 25 possessions and a goal a game this year. Only Swan, Fyfe (0.9) Martin, Dangerfield, Hodge (0.9), Gray, Parker (0.9). I'd say Dangerfield, Fyfe, Gray and the others are chances for a forward position. But Martin does have a lot of competition. I think Rance, Martin, Deledio and Riewoldt makes the squad. Rance is a lock for CHB and Riewoldt is competing with Walker for the CHF spot.

Before making dumb comments it's worth having a read back through this thread. I've been a huge advocate for Hodge in the team throughout the season, but missing almost a quarter of the season is massive. But yeah palm it off by just claiming it has to be that people hate a bloke that is almost universally loved. Dumb.
