From memory the preview showing someone killing what looked like it might have been a possum? I can't imagine having much opportunity to kill a wallaby without any bow or arrow though, agreed.

I don't think the landscape appears to lend itself to multiple months of survival, we haven't seen anyone forage anything yet, no way to catch birds, not sure on rodent availability. We'll see how long they last i suppose.
There's a lot of unknowns on the food front. Most seem focused on catching fish, and we've seen at least 2 fish caught in the previews & trailers.

Not sure how easy it would be to kill a possum or wallaby, without a bow & arrow. Also not sure what fruit/vegetable options are available, particularly at that time of year.

On a more positive note for them - the lake is unlikely to freeze over, as happens in most of the US seasons, so fishing could be a long-term strategy if they can figure out how to do it safely & efficiently.

Oh that's right, they can catch EELS. Can't wait to see the first people lost their mind they caught one, have it slip out of their hands and have to dive in after it.

Most seem to have some sort of line with them, bind their knife to the end of a piece of wood, sappling (if suitable types / shape of wood is availabe) temporarily to make a spear. I'm not talking about throwing it but using it in the thrusting motion, you just have to be able to work out how to lie in wait and take prey by surprise, whether the prey is on the ground or in a tree.

Wallabies are fairly easy to get.
Smoke the meat and last 3 months.
Enough rocks to build a good fireplace.
Wichita grubs are absolutely beautiful eating.

It's interesting how they chose this location for the show as it's so similar to the original Vancouver Island setting and so "un Australian" in its landscape.
Not many people in this country go out of their way to explore this kind of terrain, I'm and avid outdoorsman in Victoria and yeh nah if I saw that kind of bush I'd keep moving.

He had a decent go but I bet he probably exaggerated hurting the knee to save face.
so he explained...knee on that rock, back on that branch and the axe hit my head....well thank fk (for your sake) you weren't allowed to carry a gun with you!

So...
  • Mike & Kate both look very competent. Duane not bad either. Expect these three, and the hippie lady, to be the longest survivors.
  • Had to LOL at Kate. I've caught an eel - now what do I do with it? I'm sure I'd be gagging on it too, if I had to eat it, so I can't blame her for that bit.
  • Mike looks a very competent builder - much like the guy from Vancouver Island, who built everything up to & including a kitchen sink. Needs to take more care with his axe though.
  • LOL at the Big White Hunter. Couldn't find anything to hunt, didn't even contemplate fishing or looking for edible vegetation, and even if he did find an animal, he had no idea what to do without his guns or bow/arrow. Didn't take him long to give up, but at least he spent long enough in the area to know that he couldn't survive there - unlike those who gave up without even trying. Not sure how much was just giving up, and how much was due to the knee injury (which may well have stiffened considerably after the initial injury) - I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
  • Manic ex-Army guy was very open about his PTSD, and his struggles with his mental health. Not sure if flying solo on this thing is a good thing for his mental health, or a bad thing. I guess the SBS casting director would have had him checked out, before approving his participation.

PTSD Army dude is the clear fav for me. Very funny but also open to discussing his demons.

Mike's likely to win but he does talk about how good he is at shit all the time.

Like most of the other contestants - Alpha dude should be in the same category as the first two contestants to tap out. Total hunting cowboy, literally no other game or strategy and tapped out with weak excuses.

Hopefully that's the deadwood gone and the game begins.

didn't Chris PTSD say "i've had enough" in the outtro ?

Gina is a contender i think

Mike seems good with building shit, can't wait to see him on the kayak

Eel soup ? Grill the bloody thing.

Been on some long walks through Tassie in my younger days. You can go for days without seeing / hearing any wildlife except for birds and the screaming devils at night. Not a possum, paddy-melon, nothing. We had food with us of course and never tried to fish.

Makes me wonder why such inhospitable locations are chosen for Alone?

The skill level seems extremely high in the US so I imagine if they held it in some bountiful environment the show might go on for ages.

But here we have an insanely wet and cold landscape with bugger all food.

Maybe they want it to be over asap for budgeting reasons?

Not much point having it somewhere people can survive indefinitely

Grilling is wasted nutrients, a broth saves all that good fat and extracts goodness from the inedible bits.
But I agree west coast of Tassie is pretty rough terrain, I spent a little bit of time around Queenstown for work and it's wild

Only good eel soup is Korean, " choatang "
She had trouble scoffing the soup. Would have eaten it grilled.

Check out Rob Parsons on the you-tube. Documents his walks through the wilds of Tassie.

Sweet, just a quick scan but I can see I'm going to like that channel.
Her soup would be pretty average, greasy mud water with a hint of stale sweat. Smoked eel for me thanks

speculation: the fall was staged ?

- there are 2 cameras, one is on a selfie stick, so one can film oneself, and one worn around the neck as a POV cam. can be seen here:
he's filming himself with the selfie stick wearing POV cam around the neck

this is a few secs before the fall 44:01, obviously the view is from the POV cam, still worn around the neck one would assume:

JUST before he fell, 44:05, suddenly POV cam is gone (why), we get footage from the selfie stick:

he fell, the view we get is this (from selfie stick), off we go to commercial break...suspense
Screenshot 2023-04-10 113638.png

and were' back, we see his hand reaching for the camera: hmmmmm:think:
Screenshot 2023-04-10 113718.png

So NO footage of the fall from POV camera...how convenient.

arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggg (subtitles)

going back to the tent...POV cam back around neck.
