Greg Dear won the Norm Smith Medal in 1991, the year which had the worst Grand Final 'entertainment' (Angry Anderson in the Batmobile), and Greg Dear sadly passed away this week in 2022 which will soon be known as having the worst Grand Final 'entertainment' (every red-blooded man's favourite boyband member Robbie Williams)

You're thinking of Paul

Greg is his younger brother

Since 1969, every time Richmond wins a flag, significant events around the world happens

1969 - Apollo 11
1973 - Saturday Night Massacre
1974 - Nixon resigns
2017 - Trump inaugruated
2019 - First Trump impeachment
2020 - COVID pandemic

Love it! Great post.

But you're forgetting that there is one other club where significant events happen when they win the flag, and that is North Melbourne.

1975 - Vietnam War ends
1977 - Elvis Presley found dead.
1996 - Atlanta Olympics
1999 - Columbine school massacre

And to make it even more of a coincidence, these two clubs play this week continuing a storied rivalry that began in 1974!

OMG!

West Coast are the other club along with Richmond and North Melbourne where amazing world events happen when they win the flag.

And another coincidence - both West Coast and North Melbourne have won 4 flags!

1992 - Barcelona Olympics
1994 - South Africa hold their first multi-racial election
2006 - Nintendo Wii released
2018 #metoo movement goes global.

On this day 3 years ago

John Noble made his debut for Collingwood in round 17, 2019. Fast forward three years today, his father David Noble resigned as senior coach for North Melbourne.

On the second Saturday of July in 2012, Gold Coast defeated Richmond after the siren in Queensland

And now we can add to this

2012: Richmond's next game is a 4-point defeat to North Melbourne

2022: Richmond's next game is a 4-point defeat to North Melbourne

Number 2 in the 2021 mid-season rookie draft JAI Newcombe sets tackle record on debut with 14.

Number 1 in the 2022 mid-season rookie draft JAI Culley has 10 tackles to 3 quarter time in his debut with the record in sight.
He falls short, but not before being tackled by Jai Newcombe not long before the final siren, almost as a symbolic 'good work mate, but that record is mine'.

West Coast has only won flags in years when Winter Olympics were held.

1992 - Albertville, France
1994 - Lillehammer, Norway
2006 - Turin, Italy
2018 - Pyeongchang, South Korea
2026 - Milan-Cortina
2030 - Sapporo/BC

2026 is like 2006. Midterm election year, Commonwealth Games in Australia, Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Italy

Plus Pat Rafter winning US Open both years

Plus the Brisbane Broncos winning Rugby League Premierships in 1997 and 1998. In 1997 the Broncos easily beat Cronulla in Super League, the Sharks not having won a premiership since commencing in 1967, while Adelaide won comfortably over St Kilda, which hadn't won a premiership since its sole flag in 1966. Then in 1998 the Broncos swamped the Canterbury Bulldogs (Royal Blue & White) in the second half to win the NRL Grand Final, while Adelaide over-ran North Melbourne Kangaroos (Royal Blue & White) after half time in the AFL Grand Final.

Also of note is the Adelaide Crows' only two premierships in 1997 and 1998 took place in the only two years that the Adelaide Rams played top-level Rugby League. If SA League fans wanted to start a petition to resurrect and readmit the Rams to the NRL, a good place to start collecting signatures might be an Adelaide Crows home game.

and on the flip side

St.Kilda won it’s only flag in the year 1966 when not a single significant thing happened the whole year!

I guess that makes their only flag rather insignificant.

Apparently the Pies win their flags during world wars.

Ukraine and Russia are going at it and America and the west are doing their absolute darndest to ensure Collingwood doesn’t win a flag this year.

It’s true, it’s Collingwood against the rest of the world!

1990 Collingwood win premiership in October after a drawn final (Qualifying Final vs West Coast)
2010 Collingwood win premiership in October after a drawn final (Grand Final vs St Kilda)

1977 Collingwood lose premiership in October after a drawn final (Grand Final vs Nth Melb)

If Trump was President still we'd win the next 4 based on this
